Thread 4 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

1000 replies

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2023 17:17

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 & 2 & 3.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Think French (trainee) courtesan.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/02/2023 12:24

Well, that's me stuck with an inappropriate earworm for the rest of the afternoon.

CyanCrystalViolet · 07/02/2023 12:49

My mental health is taking a bit of a kicking at the moment, mainly as a result of a module I’m struggling with. It’s a lot of statistical analysis and evaluating research which I don’t think I have the headspace for at the moment. It’s making me fall behind in another, much more enjoyable module and I’m also supposed to be making a start on my dissertation. It won’t be long before one of my exams which I’m starting to stress about as well.

It’s feeling like Too Much right now and the cracks are showing. I’ve recently been diagnosed with psoriasis and have just had some MRIs for possible psoriatic arthritis, probably a manifestation of the difficulties of the past few years. I hardly get any time for anything fun as I’m always either studying, working or horribly fatigued and then playing catch up. Thank god for my lovely student friends and of course K who keep me going. Maybe I need to start scheduling some meditation time again or something.

BezMills · 07/02/2023 13:31

@CyanCrystalViolet maybe even time to push back on the timeline, if possible?
I'm in the middle of the longest ever attempt to get certified for teaching BodyCombat (aerobics class with all chop sockey). We did our basic training 24 Sep. I think one of our group got fully certified by mid October. I'll probably get mine on 24 March. I've deferred twice, because I just wasn't ready (then my gym got repossessed which is just ludicrous bad luck really). My senior fellow instructor always tells me just to relax and not stress too much about it. She's right but it's hard not to, when it means a lot to me.
If there is any way you can deload or push things back in time a bit, sounds like you could do with some space.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 07/02/2023 13:37

Thanks for the tip about Concertino upthread. Apple Music is not so good for classical, and I do like WFH to a bit of Bach, Chopin or Rameau, so that is just the ticket.

Mavis if you haven't already, pop into Relationships - it's often so sad, but sometimes hopeful too. I remember years ago following a young woman and her baby escaping a violent relationship, helped by practical advice and encouragement from mumsnetters, into a refuge. Her last post was that they were safe in the refuge, and she was going to treat herself to a hot chocolate with sprinkles.

I sometimes think of her and wonder what she's doing - and threads like that really opened my eyes into the psyche of abusive men - it certainly helped me on my gender critcal journey.

The thing about MN is that you have women discussing the best house at Eton on some threads, and really poor and/or abused women talking about their lives on others.

Britinme · 07/02/2023 13:48

I highly agree with pushing back on the timeline if things are too stressful. Nobody should be standing over you with a whip of urgency, least of all yourself.

CyanCrystalViolet · 07/02/2023 14:06

Thanks @BezMills @Britinme, you’re right and I have been giving some thought to deferring this module recently to free up time to focus on my dissertation as well as the exam for my other module. I’ve been looking forward to writing my dissertation so it would be a shame for it to become a stressful experience due to lack of time. Deferring this module wouldn’t actually make any difference to when I graduate… I just took on an extra one this year to leave me with my final 30 credits next year, giving me more time for clinical work. None of it is worth a mental breakdown though!

<Puts down whip of urgency>

I know, I know, NOT ALL MEN

Oh, I'm an utter shit. I eat the last Rolo in the packet. 😉

Kucinghitam · 07/02/2023 14:40

@CyanCrystalViolet Flowers I agree with the others, defer the module that's giving you trouble. It's not worth the extra stress and the knock-on effect on your other work.

Also, I just realised we're nearly at 1000 posts so I've made a new thread.

Thanks, Kuc! It seems like we've got through this one quite quickly.

bignosebignose · 07/02/2023 14:54

Sorry to hear of your woes, Binker and Cyan. Welcome aboard New Old Posters.

I ordered a bottle of that Nutty thing last week - £25 for 50cl. I'm very sceptical about it but may as well give it a whirl, don't know when it will arrive. Something I've been successfully using as an alcohol substitute is drinks containing CBD oil - I've been buying TRIP but there are various brands. Their elderflower and mint flavour is really nice. CBD is a relaxing element of cannabis but doesn't have any psychoactive element.

I don't know whether it's really having a physical effect or if it's just psychological, but it doesn't really matter. A couple of cans of that instead of a few beers seems to do the trick.

@Kucinghitam BAT SIGNAL. This thread looks like it's going to be full soon, tradition requires that you do the honours!

bignosebignose · 07/02/2023 14:55

Dagnabbit, that'll learn me for leaving a draft for 20 minutes to pay my flipping VAT bill.

Winterborne74 · 07/02/2023 14:59

How do you keep a draft alive for 20 minutes? I blink, and mine are wiped!

bignosebignose · 07/02/2023 15:01

I think sheer luck, TBH. I've had vanishing drafts before but writing on this laptop it seemed fine for me to go to another window to get fleeced by HMRC and then come back like nothing had happened.

That was probably partly my own fault for narcissistically filling it up with photos of my holibobs Wink

PS. I hate the word "holibobs" Grin

@Kucinghitam I enjoyed your pic, especially of the food.

@Medee - I'm trying to place who you were on WDYDLN but struggling....

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 07/02/2023 15:56

Have PMed you, Binker.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 07/02/2023 16:04

'holliers' is better than 'hollibobs'

in my opinion

It was good to see them, I loved the food pictures. Glad you got to visit at long last.

kittykarate · 07/02/2023 17:04

@BezMills - Hey Oney! I love Body Combat but the idea of becoming an registered instructor fears me as I can barely do the running man, nevermind the jump knees.

I'm on whatever LesMills I can do barefoot for the next few weeks as I wore holes in both my feet with ski boots last week. So I'll be mainly be Barre, BC and BB for a while.

BezMills · 07/02/2023 18:01

@kittykarate yeah my jump knees are veh much "work in progress" but I think I am decent at most of it.
