It’s here and I like it.

It reminds me a lot of the Polish grandpa ad from a few years ago. m.youtube.com/watch?v=tU5Rnd-HM6A

I like Christmas adverts to be, well, Christmassy, and WTF have they done to that song?

JL ruining songs every Christmas,

frozendaisy · 10/11/2022 18:47

Well it brought a tear to my eye but then I cry at most heartstring adverts (and toy story still can't get through the end of 3) this is all since having children used to be hardcore.

I love the blink song, and like it when songs are completely changed, blink will have agreed to this.

So yes, gosh a foster dad wants to make his new foster daughter feel at home, perhaps, what a fucking bastard eh! And let's face it if anything extreme sports needs doing in onset middle age we mostly get "brave daddy" to do it regardless of aptitude!

And the weather is what it is actually like (down south at least) in December it is no longer snow and choir boys.

Perhaps the world would be a better place if more were prepared to do more for others. Just perhaps.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/11/2022 18:51

Great message, poor advert (I want penguins, kids waiting for Santa and bouncing dogs).

The Anchor butter adverts are the best (oh and the Cat Protection League true story ones).

CuriousCatfish · 10/11/2022 18:53

I don't think I've every cried at an advert in my life. The price of the stuff in JL brings a tear to my eye though.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/11/2022 18:53

Great advert, nice to see a Christmas advert about caring/sharing etc instead of just mindless consumerism 🥰

Never heard of the song so fine by me 🤷‍♀️

CuriousCatfish · 10/11/2022 18:57

You don't think the advert is about JL selling stuff then?

Spoodee · 10/11/2022 19:12

WordtoYoMumma · 10/11/2022 17:50

They John Lewised Blink 182 😭

They didn't.

It's a cover by puddles pity party that's been around years

Phos · 10/11/2022 12:51

I GOT it, just a bit bored of "worthy" causes being shoehorned in everywhere we look.

Confused Is that because you prefer unworthy causes, or you just like things to be completely meaningless?

LaurieFairyCake · 10/11/2022 19:22

CuriousCatfish

That's why the use of the word 'just' Wink

"Not JUST mindless consumerism"

Sunrisemouse · 10/11/2022 19:31

25% of the ad merch is going to charity. Some Xmas baubles, skateboard, teddy and pyjamas etc.

Fairyliz · 10/11/2022 19:37

Anyone else pining for a meerkats advert?
So far today I have seen adverts about people suffering cancer, children being abused, children starving to death, tigers/rhinos/elephants being hunted and the world being destroyed.
I actually don’t think I can take any more misery adverts; I know the world is shit.
I think I need to start the Christmas booze now.

AutisticLegoLover · 10/11/2022 18:02

They have wrecked the song.
You can't add a Christmas tree and call it Christmassy. It's too try hard on every level. I've been crying over everything lately and it's not brought a tear to my eye. Poor show, John Lewis, poor show.

i dunno, people will insist Die Hard is a Christmas film...

Neither really, maybe closer to the second one, I was just hoping for a Christmas ad without them needing to go "Look at us, we're so altruistic" and people falling for it hook line and sinker. Seriously, who would tear up over this ad? Polish grandfather and even the dog in the alternative ad last year I understand but this one just came across as insincere.

BadNomad · 10/11/2022 20:15

25% of the merch sales goes to charity and JL keeps the rest? Gross.

FluffytheGoldfish · 10/11/2022 20:38

The cover of the Bink 182 song is about 5 years old and is by Puddles Pit Party and Scott Bradley's Post Modern Jukebox.

the80sweregreat · 10/11/2022 20:46

I've never heard this slower version before today !
I liked it, but I prefer the original one

Whitecatseverywhere · 10/11/2022 20:49

I don’t like it, the best one was the Man on the Moon and the Hare.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 10/11/2022 20:54

I thought it was utter bollocks.

However, I think we now know that the "MN Men's Hobby" that is so outing is actually skateboarding, so I suppose it has achieved something.

I'd never heard the song before, and it was completely unmemorable.

MuggleMe · 10/11/2022 21:01

My council's fostering team got an enquiry from someone watching the ad, so even if it ends up making them wads of money, kudos to JL for spending their budget on something meaningful.

TooHotToRamble · 10/11/2022 21:04

Love it! That’s the first one to bring a tear to my eye since….

which I’m not sure they are ever going to better! Still brings a tear to my eye now!

Brilliant!

ZestFest · 10/11/2022 21:13

Meh - it was ok as the launch of a social awareness campaign - but didn't really work as the Christmas advert of a department store. Too earnest, too virtuous, look at us and how worthy we are.

I'm going to be lazy and quote Zest's post as they've said it better than I was going to.

I didn't like it.

Hopealong · 10/11/2022 21:25

Heard a John Lewis representative being interviewed on the radio today about their advert. She explained about their ongoing programme to recruit and give career opportunities to the fostered community, has been in exisitence for circa 18 months apparently. They also advised that statistically a fostered child is more likely to end up homeless than to go to university. A horrifying fact.

Obviously any advert is about marketing the brand but I think they've been brave to do something different. Can't understand people saying it isn't Christmassy enough, surely it's a time about thinking of others above all else. This advert will do much to raise awareness and lead to people considering/becoming foster parents.

Well done John Lewis from me.

MrsmrsmrsS · 10/11/2022 21:33

It makes me feel suicidal, not warm and fuzzy.
not everything has to be worthy AF. John Lewis is somewhere you go to buy your mum a new dressing gown for Christmas, it’s not part of the care system crisis. The old man on the moon one was also an abomination against Christmas. I like/love most of the rest.
