It’s here and I like it.

It reminds me a lot of the Polish grandpa ad from a few years ago. m.youtube.com/watch?v=tU5Rnd-HM6A

I like it.

Waiting for the competitive mumsnet jl xmas ad crying to begin...

Here I am! I went in totally sceptical, don't usually get excited about a Christmas ad. I knew there'd be a reason knocking at the door but was completely blindsided.

I'm blubbing. I used to be a foster carer. Was like a punch to the gut.

Dollydea · 10/11/2022 08:17

It's nice, just doesn't feel like a Christmas ad. Agree with others that they've butchered the song though.

My favourite advert ever was the Sainsbury's ww1 Christmas truce, don't think anything will beat that personally.

Member869894 · 10/11/2022 08:18

I loved it and yes, it made me cry

Moonlightsonatas · 10/11/2022 08:20

The Christmas ads are designed to get people talking about the brand. It works because here we are! I admit I shed a tear, I’ve got two young children now and everything with kids in just makes me blub!

00100001 · 10/11/2022 07:50

It's a nice ad.

But is it a Christmas ad?

Still doesn't beat IKEA from a couple of years ago.

It's older than the pyramids

That one is well made but would be so wrong just now as the message is 'buy loads of new stuff to make you feel better about yourself' which just wouldn't sit right in 2022.

Whinge · 10/11/2022 08:21

I liked the message, but felt the AD didn't really go anywhere.

It would have been lovely if she had arrived and they were struggling as many will in this situation. After a few arguments or shots of her sat in her room not connecting with them, he then sees her practising in the street and we get a flashback to him as a younger lad learning the same trick. Then he digs out some old videos of him as a teen, and from there the relationship grows and they started to connect over the shared interest. Where as this just felt like the focus was on him learning just to impress her. Perhaps it's just me though, as lots seem to like it.

Notonthestairs · 10/11/2022 08:22

Just seen it. Caught me by surprise and whilst I didn't cry it I thought the sentiment was lovely.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2022 08:22

I think it’s a changed to see an ad without the piles of presents and food and people being over jolly. Because lots of peoples Christmasses aren’t going to be like that.
And there’s the charity angle too.

BobbyBobbyBobby · 10/11/2022 08:22

I saw it on YouTube as I don’t watch tv.

All these twee overly sentimental adverts are just a cynical ploy to make you buy their stuff, that’s all the advert is. Not some profound message from a higher power.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2022 08:24

Well that’s a given. It’s not a ‘cynical ploy’ though, there’s no hidden message. 😂

Geneticsbunny · 10/11/2022 08:26

And now i am crying.

theydontspeakforus · 10/11/2022 08:26

It's gorgeous and meaningful.

MyRiverThee · 10/11/2022 08:28

I think it’s shit. But I love the Aldi Home Alone themed one.

Needmorelego · 10/11/2022 08:29

I'm confused. I can't get the link to work on my phone but what people are describing sounds completely different to what someone has shared on another thread.
What exactly is the advert....?

carefulcalculator · 10/11/2022 08:30

I didn't understand the Aldi one - how/why did they leave without Kevin, if they know he doesn't like to be left alone? I am on board with sentient carrots but thought the pretext was poor.

The advert is man learning to skateboard before a Foster child arrives at their home so he has something to talk to her about and bond over.

LabradorsLabradorsLabradors · 10/11/2022 08:33

I agree that it's lovely to see an ad set in normal houses, without piles of pressies and bling. And all credit to John Lewis for using their platform to highlight (if just a little) children in the care system. I know it's there to sell stuff for John Lewis, but it also promotes their values well and did some good too. Catches the (middle class John Lewis shopper) zeitgeist perfectly.

JellyfishandShells · 10/11/2022 08:35

Attempted mildly funny start of ‘incompetent fool of man’ trope, awful rendition of depressing dirge of a song, then an exploitation of a genuinely sad situation at the end.

Needmorelego · 10/11/2022 08:35

@Beees thanks. Not the advert someone has shared on the other thread then because that's completely different 🤣

"Where as this just felt like the focus was on him learning just to impress her. Perhaps it's just me though, as lots seem to like it."

That's the point @Whinge

Without even knowing her, he goes to all that effort so when she arrives she'll see something that reassures her. That first few minutes of an FC arriving is terrifying.

Have you seen Home Alone?

Well.... That's what all advertising is about surely...buy this new product....?

99trafficrelatedproblems · 10/11/2022 08:45

Loved it and made me cry too. I don’t care the reason, anything that raises awareness when it comes to looked after children and how much more support we should be giving them as a society, I’m here for.

gogohmm · 10/11/2022 08:46

Tearjerker that one!

My friend was called at lunchtime on Christmas Eve to ask if she could take an emergency placement (she already had a long term foster child) and at 4pm this underweight bedraggled kid arrived with a half full bin liner. Thankfully social services must have connections to the North Pole because within a few minutes with the social worker still there there was a knock at the door and a guy was stood with presents, new clothes etc for both the new child and her existing charge, but also a huge box of chocolates for my friend, meanwhile a few phone calls had been made by her mother and Waitrose set aside extra food, which she collected but they didn't charge her. A community coming together for a vulnerable child. The child is now a teen thriving in a therapeutic long term placement (2 kids was too much)
