It’s here and I like it.

It reminds me a lot of the Polish grandpa ad from a few years ago. m.youtube.com/watch?v=tU5Rnd-HM6A

I liked it I don’t see how some don’t get it. Are people so far removed from stuff it was nice of him to learn how to skate to make the child feel like they have something in common a lot of effort he did yes it’s nice

It's MN. He's a man. He obv went through all that for some selfish reason to one up his wife and get out of the washing up whilst he plays Disney Dad with the foster kid.

If it had been a woman trying to find common ground it would be applauded.

JL ruin good songs every year!
To be honest I don't see the point of any of the Xmas ads... does watching them make any of you want to go to that particular store? They cost so much money to make too. Stores could use the money to reduce prices at Xmas and help everyone!

How much do you think the adverts cost to make?? If you divided it by all the goods across all of their stores, you could maybe get a reduction of 0.000001p per item 😂

NashvilleQueen · 10/11/2022 12:43

umm, it exactly what xmas should be about .... giving and sharing with family, friends and community around us ...as far as I can tell, it could not be MORE about Christmas if it slapped us in the face with a cold fish

This with (jingle) bells on. Some people are so weird.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/11/2022 12:44

The whole point of the wife not saying "oh hi social worker, can't wait for Katie to come" as she puts up a new stocking and makes up a bed is the twist. Thsts the whole point. First time of watching you aren't meant to guess at it, just enjoy the ooh at the end and then the next time it's on telly between Corrie segments you get to enjoy it to enjoy it from the inside instead of the outside.

NashvilleQueen · 10/11/2022 12:46

I like the ad except where it goes schmalzy at the end.

So you missed the entire point of it then? Or you just enjoy watching a man learn to skateboard?!

I GOT it, just a bit bored of "worthy" causes being shoehorned in everywhere we look.

grayhairdontcare · 10/11/2022 12:55

I thought it was shite and they killed yet another song.
Why spend so much money on that ?
Why not just give the 8 million to the charity?

They cost a couple of million… I’d rather see it got to charities/food banks… help some less well off people.

Totally agree too. Lousia May Alcott wasn't "virtue signalling" when she had her characters in Little Women give their Christmas meal to a poor family. People have always thought of those with less at Christmas.

AngeloMysterioso · 10/11/2022 13:07

I liked it. I like that it was a bit more toned down in terms of the merry-and-brightness- if it hadn’t been, chances are the same people moaning that it isn’t cheerful enough would be moaning that it’s too cheerful, what with the cost of living crisis happening. Thought the message was lovely, but it could have showed him enlisting the help of some youngsters at the skate park to learn, and then having a go with their new foster child.

I even liked the song and I’m a huge fan of the original. Reflects how the bloke is a bit old and past it, so the song is more toned down and slow.

Amoreena · 10/11/2022 13:08

I guess Charles Dickens was "virtue signalling" when he wrote A Christmas Carol.

RealDeeBliss · 10/11/2022 13:18

Haven't RTFT but it's Puddles from Puddles Pitt Party singing, he found a little fave covering Lorde's Royals. Phenomenal voice and incredible live.

I'm not one for Christmas ads myself, glad they seem to be more appropriate in terms of tone rather than trying to show the norm should be a huge gathering with expensive presents and everyone enjoying themselves.

OldWivesTale · 10/11/2022 13:33

I like it. I think they've played it well bearing in mind the shit many people are in this year. It did make me cry but that's normal.

Yes, I can never understand those who cry "virtue signalling" at everything that shows compassion and human decency.

Afterfire · 10/11/2022 13:39

It’s lovely and sends a lovely message. And it’s nice to see children in care represented in the media, and not in the Tracy Beaker type way. People are too quick to moan.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 10/11/2022 13:58

I liked it.

I am confused by people on here saying it's not like real life (it's an advert, adverts are never like real life) or that JL should have given the money for the ad to charity (John Lewis is a retail business that uses adverts to generate sales, not a philanthropic society) and that it isn't Christmassy (when it's about kindness, family and doing things for others ).

At least it's better than the fucking terrible M&S one.

ChocolatSouris · 10/11/2022 14:11

I liked it and it didn’t click until the door opened with the nervous child at the end.

Christmas is a time for thinking of others. Much better to highlight children who have had a difficult start and those who help them than the usual excesses.

LondonWolf · 10/11/2022 14:36

Love it. Had a little sniffle 😢

APJ1 · 10/11/2022 14:59

The advert itself is okay but that cover, awful!.

I liked it too, and this is a good point. Christmas ads, films and programming generally at Christmas lean hard on images of traditional families, all smiling and warm and bathed in firelight. That must be hard to watch for children who don't have that.

I think this is very sweet and it DID make me cry - as always. My favourite remains the one with the child counting down the days till Xmas so he could give his parents their present.

Threads about the JL Christmas ads always contain 50% moaning and complaints about the music, though. It's a festive tradition in its own right!

the80sweregreat · 10/11/2022 16:05

It is lovely

TightPants · 10/11/2022 16:13

Loved it.
I’m very surprised at the criticism on here! As pp said above, it’s important that looked after children see themselves represented somewhere.
