It’s here and I like it.

It reminds me a lot of the Polish grandpa ad from a few years ago. m.youtube.com/watch?v=tU5Rnd-HM6A

I saw it on YouTube as I don’t watch tv.

All these twee overly sentimental adverts are just a cynical ploy to make you buy their stuff, that’s all the advert is. Not some profound message from a higher power.

Well yes, it’s an advert 😂

99trafficrelatedproblems · 10/11/2022 08:47

However that version of that song is utterly dire.

Well.... That's what all advertising is about surely...buy this new product....?

No, lots of advertising is about 'remember our brand' or 'identify with our brand'.

Whinge · 10/11/2022 08:49

Without even knowing her, he goes to all that effort so when she arrives she'll see something that reassures her.

But I didn't get that from the AD, it didn't feel like he was trying to reassure her to me it felt like he wanted to impress her. Like I say I appreciate I might be alone, but I just thought it would have been a nicer story if he already had the interest, rather than learning just so he could tell her skated.

MyRiverThee · 10/11/2022 08:41

Have you seen Home Alone?

Yes of course, but Kevin is an adult carrot isn't he?

SkylightSkylight · 10/11/2022 08:51

carefulcalculator · 10/11/2022 08:06

I liked it anyway, I thought it was good to have an ad that focused on something you can do for someone rather than something you can buy for someone.

But the Big Christmas Ad's are never about buying something.

I like the Ad, but not as their main Christmas Ad.

AllThatAndMore · 10/11/2022 08:52

I really like it and I love the song. I do wish it was more Christmasy though .

Martinisarebetterdirty · 10/11/2022 08:52

I loved it and am in floods. We have adopted children in our family and before they arrived we all did everything we could to learn about what they were interested in. It’s not about impressing, it’s about having something to bone over. Butchered the song but I loved the advert.

I am surprised I am discussing it to this extent! To my eyes the ad is about making the effort for someone else. It was the learning that makes it for her. If he already had the interest that would just be coincidence and lucky for him.

KatherineJaneway · 10/11/2022 08:52

Brilliant, really well done.

MyRiverThee · 10/11/2022 08:53

picklemewalnuts · 10/11/2022 08:16

Here I am! I went in totally sceptical, don't usually get excited about a Christmas ad. I knew there'd be a reason knocking at the door but was completely blindsided.

I'm blubbing. I used to be a foster carer. Was like a punch to the gut.

I think it’s even worse from a foster carers point of view. ‘Learn how to skateboard as foster child likes it and all will be well and well have this lovely Xmas’....total bollocks.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 10/11/2022 08:53

Bond over! Worst autocorrect ever

Needmorelego · 10/11/2022 08:53

Ok. I watched it on their website. It's alright I spoze.
Doesn't make me want to rush there to buy a skateboard. I'd probably go to an actual skateboard shop for that.

LadyBrienne · 10/11/2022 08:55

@carefulcalculator agree exactly " To my eyes the ad is about making the effort for someone else. It was the learning that makes it for her. If he already had the interest that would just be coincidence and lucky for him."

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 10/11/2022 08:56

Like they are going to do planned moves for children on Christmas day🙄
I prefer the spoof one

DrivingHomeForChristmaaargh · 10/11/2022 08:57

@carefulcalculator Yes, I see it the same way.

sendwineandastraw · 10/11/2022 08:58

Well I loved it…

Im not sure how JL could have played it better and definitely were respectful of the financial tone atm. I’d be more miserable seeing over priced spreads of food, sacks of toys and gadgets that none of us can afford this year.

Christmas should me much more about sentiment, time and care than things and I think JL captured that really well. I thought it was lovely.

millymog11 · 10/11/2022 08:59

made me blub.

Are there actually family men out there who's ambition it is in midlife is to learn to skateboard and not to shag everything woman who is not their wife?? I have not met them any road.

The kid at the end was nice tho.

BooksAndHooks · 10/11/2022 08:59

As a normal advert fine, great message and good to know they support this. But, not very festive at all. Certainly not what I look for in the John Lewis Christmas adverts.

Rowthe · 10/11/2022 09:01

I found it dull, and quite manipulative.

AbsoluteYawns · 10/11/2022 09:02

Omg OP.
I wasn't expecting that!!!! Teary now.

ToastAndBeans · 10/11/2022 09:03

Not Christmassy at all.

Being honest, I would have been more impressed with JL if they had donated the estimated £8m cost to children's charities.

Gud · 10/11/2022 09:03

Meh, but standard for JL, slow down and murder a song and look here a man is parenting!

WaddleAway · 10/11/2022 09:04

LadyBrienne · 10/11/2022 08:08

umm, it exactly what xmas should be about .... giving and sharing with family, friends and community around us ...as far as I can tell, it could not be MORE about Christmas if it slapped us in the face with a cold fish

Agreed. I guess it’s not ‘Christmassy’ in that it’s not about consumption (food, drink, gifts) and it’s not about sequins and sparkles etc, but surely it’s about the ‘spirit’ of Christmas.

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 10/11/2022 09:07

Gud, yes, why do they always have to use the slowed down, strangulated song? Depressing before we even get to the ad content.

I suppose from a pulling heart strings at Christmas perspective it works, but it's giving a very rosy view of fostering and being fostered.
