OP i bet if you put those clothes on your child, and an identical ironed set on another child, after an hour you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

This.

Ironing is one of those old fashioned things that people used to do in the 50s, a chore done mainly by women.

Absolutely this!
I'm pretty sure I look very obviously unironed but I can't see why it matters! I'm clean!

Re the number of washings I'm pretty sure I do at least this too...DH has work uniform, clothes for 2nd job, sports clothes, normal clothes. I have work clothes, normal clothes, sports clothes. Dcs have normal clothes, school uniform, clothes for sports/clubs. Then sheets, towels etc. Never bloody ending, no way I'm ironing after all that!

turquoise1988 · 19/08/2022 21:55

For anyone saying "no one notices...", I think people do notice, sometimes. They just don't say anything because people iron less, if it all, nowadays and it makes you sound a bit stupid to say, "why haven't you ironed that?" No one would ask that!

I wouldn't say I pay much attention daily, but say if someone was wearing a dress to a party or a wedding and it was full of creases and hadn't been ironed, I would notice. I wouldn't say anything, or care really, but I would still notice.

I love a MN “ I don’t iron” thread. Grin

Haven't ironed anything since 2005 and nobody I know has had anything terrible happen to them because of not ironing clothes.

It’s almost as if it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of life.

if you can tell I don’t iron my clothes… oh well!

I don't mind ironing clothes that benefit from it - work tops, dresses etc. T shirts and denims you can get away without though, the creases do fall out when worn.
I don't judge anyone for their kids everyday clothes!
I do some volunteering at a clothes scheme, occasionally you get a cotton or linen item like a little girls dress screwed up like a rag, and I think, did someone just donate it because they CBA to iron? But by the same token 90% of modern clothes are quite tolerant of non ironing.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 19/08/2022 22:01

People are going to judge you no matter what you do. You can't escape the judgements.

You could iron the fuck out of those shorts and someone will judge you because your dd is wearing pink.

Or can't ride a bike without stabilisers.
Or won't eat tomatoes.
Or can't speak Cantonese.
Or doesn't do her homework.
Or plays on your phone while her sibling has swimming lessons.
Or plays out/doesn't play out in the street.

mondaytosunday · 19/08/2022 22:02

I just put it on and body heat makes the wrinkles drop out

User639921 · 19/08/2022 22:02

People will soon cut down on ironing with the cost of electric being so high, what a waste of money

Muminabun · 19/08/2022 22:04

A man would never post this. This is why we need feminism. We are light years behind men.

mountainsunsets · 19/08/2022 22:05

People get really worked up about ironing. I suppose the people who don’t iron get all defensive when they are told that, actually, we can tell than they haven’t ironed their clothes and those of us who do iron think the non-ironers are scruffy, lazy tykes and get cross with the ‘life’s too short to look tidy, just loll about looking a mess, you uptight Stepford Wives’ inverted snobbery of it all.

Nah, I just think people who iron are wasting their lives 🤣

Sweetlikechocolate6 · 19/08/2022 22:06

Sidetracking here but those people who hang stuff up to dry how do you get it not to smell ? I use washing tablets and fabric conditioner and although towels smell fine certain t shirts and other clothes stink of a sour smell ?

Batshittery · 19/08/2022 22:10

RudsyFarmer · 19/08/2022 21:38

Nonsense. I have never judged a parent based on the creases of her children’s clothes.

I didn't say I would judge anybody but I would notice

turquoise1988 · 19/08/2022 22:10

"Nah, I just think people who iron are wasting their lives 🤣"

Some people would say the same about you scrolling social media...🤓.

(And yes, I'm here too!)

BeechFairy · 19/08/2022 22:12

Those clothes look absolutely fine to me. My children grew up with never having any clothing ironed, let alone towels and bedding 🤣. They never noticed and certainly didn't suffer.
I just cannot fathom why people undertake such pointless drudgery.

Maybe so, but I'm not the one calling people scruffy or messy Wink

User639921 · 19/08/2022 22:16

I doubt any men would stand there ironing a large basket of clothes, bedding and towels, maybe their shirts for work but not all the family bedding

PuppyMonkey · 19/08/2022 22:25

Well done to all the people on the thread who “notice” when clothes are creased. You are so talented and special! You should start successful businesses based on this useful skill. And you must put your unique observational prowess on your CV too, bound to impress folk. Grin

savehannah · 19/08/2022 22:28

Those look totally fine to me. As said above most creases fall out when you wear clothes anyway. I have a very small number of items I actually iron which are material which really crease badly. But normal cotton things like this, especially kids' really don't need ironing and look absolutely fine on. As soon as you sit down in an ironed skirt or shorts you'd crease them anyway.

redbigbananafeet · 19/08/2022 22:31

Chocolatiestchocolate · 19/08/2022 19:59

Thank you. Its hung on a line outside.
Our bathroom is too tiny for putting anything in there. The floor space is 2ft x 2.5ft thw shower goes over bath and everyone uses different tines of day. Plus i do min 2 loads per day its not do able.

Yes dh often irons too but lately more me as hes been doing loads of hours (like 85 hours last week) but yes i think i need to lower standards..

If your husband is spending 85+ hours a week working he won't be seeing his children to worry about how ironed their clothes are.

Kendodd · 19/08/2022 22:33

God I dread to think what you'd do if you're kids got dirty!

I'll happily look like a bag of shit to avoid ironing.

That said our washer and drier leave stuff pretty uncreased anyway 🤷‍♀️ so it's not something I spend any time considering. With DD's clothes if it's devoid of stains we are winning, never mind anything else.

Bluebells12 · 19/08/2022 22:39

I would wear it like that and not think twice about it.

Wnikat · 19/08/2022 22:40

Just hugely lower your standards. No one will care and your life will be easier

Kendodd · 19/08/2022 22:43

I iron bedding as well. It really makes a noticeable difference.

I have heard ironed sheets are lovely to sleep on. Even that thought couldn't persuade me to bother though.
