Machine washed, shook, line dried, machine never over full.
Tried lower spin and higher spin.

Yet looks like this. No way could i let the dcs wear it like this.

Id LOVE not to iron so much.. What's your tips

I spend far too much time ironing.

I hate ironing with a passion. I probably iron my husbands cotton shirts once or twice a year, he irons them usually.

My secret is to get plastic hangers or varnished wooden hangers and hang everything you can. You can hang out on the line on a hanger.

When it's dry it's likely to be flat. If it's not I have a laundry hook at the right height for T shirts and shirts next to my steamer. A quick blast from a few inches away whist it's hung up gets the last crinkles to drop.

What sort of maniacs don't iron?

wibblywobblybits · 20/08/2022 08:08

Oh wow I am definitely in the minority then. I am not just saying it, but I wouldn't even let my children go to nursery wearing something as creased as that, so OP I'm absolutely with you here.

That being said, I've honestly have never looked at another child and thought "cor your clothes are creased" - but I know for sure I'd never go out wearing creased clothes so why should the children? I think it's nice for them to look put together, even if it eventually ends up covered in mud and snacks. That's like saying I won't tidy the kitchen today because it only ends up messy again anyway?!

Put them on an hour before you go out.
All of those creases will be gone and will be replaced with different creases.
If you iron them , they will still be replaced by normal wear creases.

Agreed.
I'd not iron either of those items in the photo.
OP, you're just making work for yourself for no real benefit.

SquirrelCity · 20/08/2022 08:29

If it makes you feel any better, I wouldn't bother ironing that (only iron shirts) and if anyone has ever judged me because of it, I am blissfully unaware of that and it has had no impact on my life at all.

BertieBotts · 20/08/2022 08:33

certain t shirts and other clothes stink of a sour smell

Nothing to do with drying method. They need the fabric conditioner and deodorant stripped out of them. Look up how to strip cloth nappies and keep these clothes aside and do that process to them (you can harmlessly include towels, face/cleaning cloths, muslins etc in the same wash if it seems wasteful to wash a small amount of items.)

BertieBotts · 20/08/2022 08:37

Going back to ironing for a minute, I used to iron, because I agree that ironed clothes do look nice. But I would end up with clothes like in the OP after ironing. Which is partly why I can't see the problem with them. But also, I remember feeling incredibly stressed, demotivated and depressed because I'd spent all this time ironing and couldn't get stuff perfect anyway. So I just stopped. No more stress because things aren't perfect. It doesn't matter.

Even a lot of people in this thread who say they can tell say they wouldn't care/judge. Noticing is not the same as judging.

I do think ironing will fall/is falling out of favour. For items like shirts etc then it does make a difference but for a lot of things it just doesn't matter.

BertieBotts · 20/08/2022 08:38

And I don't think laziness includes not making effort that doesn't inconvenience somebody else. Lazy would be not ironing, but expecting somebody else to iron for you. Deciding that you don't need to iron and it doesn't matter isn't lazy. It's just making a cost-benefit decision.

Phos · 20/08/2022 08:46

I don't think they look that bad. My kids would wear clothes like that. Hardly see such minor creases once they're on. I iron stuff if they're really bad, which depends on the fabric but the ones in the photo, naaaaah, just stick em on.

DisforDarkChocolate · 20/08/2022 08:46

I'd be happy with the shorts, they would look like that as soon as they were on.

Tshirts etc go on hangers (I have special little plastic things from Lakeland that stop them blowing off the line). Smooth as well as shake. I buy lots of clothes based on their ability to line dry. Also, I

DisforDarkChocolate · 20/08/2022 08:48

^ I also have a clothes steamer, it's more fun than an iron but it still doesn't get used much.

Get a dryer! My one changed my life quick 10 minute warm spin and fold or hang while warm. I used to spend hours every weekend ironing , haven't used an iron once since we bought the dryer

Yes it's the dryer. My kids clothes were never crumpled going on them as line dry and ten mins or even less in the dryer. Do them in small batches so not squashed. I oversee it so not left in rattling around wasting electricity. Everything goes in and only thing ironed are work shirts which l do in big batches.

Spohn · 20/08/2022 08:51

I haven't ironed anything for years, why waste your life? I can't imagine how boring someone's life must be to actually look at other people's clothes, and form an opinion on them😄

Branleuse · 20/08/2022 08:51

You just have to be less bothered about it.
If creases in clothes bother you then you have to iron.
I would not bother ironing shorts and tshirt like that. They look fine.
You could probably save a lot of time by only ironing formal stuff

abovedecknotbelow · 20/08/2022 09:01

I don't have an iron. Shake and smooth as soon as you take out of the machine, hang on hangars if possible if not let carefully.

The only think that gets ironed here are school and work shirts and they go the cleaners to be ironed.

Don't care what anyone says you can tell who is wearing un ironed clothes and it looks scruffy.

This is 100% true and it’s the reason why we iron clothes in the first place. I went into H&M outlet last week and all the clothes on the rails were really creased. They were unpacked and just hung up on the rails and no, none of the creases fell out. They looked a mess and didn’t tempt me to try anything on.

Full disclosure, I iron most things including bed sheets. I love getting into a tidy and freshly laundered bed. I would never send my DS 8 into school with his uniform not ironed. He’s just as fastidious as me and likes to keep his clothes looking neat! I wouldn’t tumble dry to save myself the bother of ironing especially with energy bills going up. I have really good quality iron and can through it very quickly, and it’s a good work out for the upper arms!

TheTeddyBears · 20/08/2022 09:37

You could probably get away with the shorts but yeah t shirt needs done.

Hanging still doesn't make them look completely creaseless though. My husband hangs some of his stuff and he gets away it but if I were wearing it I'd still iron it first as it looks smarter and crisper. Believe me I'm not one for ironing at all I often just put a towel down and do mine and kids tops or whatever as we wear them.

My eldest started school this week and I'm going to have to iron her uniform 😩 so planning to do it all on Sunday evening to get it over with. I mean her shirt looks alright but to me I can tell it hasn't been ironed, same with pinafores there's bits that look ok but I still see creases.

Holidaydreamingagain · 20/08/2022 09:43

I don’t like crease neck lines on T-shirts so they get a quick iron if they’re creased. I also can’t wear any kind of cotton blouse or dress or anything with a frill without ironing. Plus now I have gone back to looser jeans they tend to need ironing. Less bothered about kids stuff but some clothes really do look crap if they haven’t had a quick press and you really do notice

wibblywobblybits · 20/08/2022 08:03

What sort of maniacs don't iron?

Me.

Unless it’s job interview,wedding or a funeral I don’t iron.

Washing straight out of the washing machine after it’s finished and straightened with my hands.
DH’s cotton chinos and my linen dresses are just fine.

Pinkyxx · 20/08/2022 10:16

I used to iron everything, including tea towels which I'd then fold into lovely little rectangles...I love that perfectly pressed look but was it necessary?... I then become a Mum, then a single Mum and now I simply don't have the time to indulge what was in retrospect completely unnecessary ironing of everything. The only thing I iron now are shirts.

I can't see any need to iron the items in OPs pic.. hang tops on hangers, straighten other stuff when taking out of the machine to hang or if putting in the dryer. I make sure I fold clothes as soon as the cycle is finished as I find they crumple if left.

shewhomustbeEbayed · 20/08/2022 10:27

I don’t iron at all, I use Comfort easy iron in the washing machine, buy dp cotton non iron shirts which I put on hangers to dry.
There are things like linen which I don’t buy as would definitely need ironing.

DuesToTheDirt · 20/08/2022 10:31

I wouldn't say I pay much attention daily, but say if someone was wearing a dress to a party or a wedding and it was full of creases and hadn't been ironed, I would notice. I wouldn't say anything, or care really, but I would still notice.

Well that's my guideline for when to iron really - special occasions. That's it. And I try not to buy clothes for daily wear that will crease very badly - I was looking at shorts yesterday, and anything linen was a non-starter.

What kind of maniacs do?!

luckylavender · 20/08/2022 11:22

@TheOrigRights - as I said fine if you don't want to iron. But those shirts are really creased.

JustHavinABreak · 20/08/2022 11:26

Tumble dry everything and fold when it's still warm from the drier. Might need to iron something special but very rarely. As my 5 year old asked recently "Why do we have an ironing board when we never iron"
