I think it is sad that people feel they can't feel good about flying our national flag at a time of celebration because of others attempting to hijack it for political reasons. I find it hard to believe many other countries would have the same attitude.

But it’s far too late. Other countries don’t necessarily have the same history of how their flag has been - and still is - used.

The Union Jack is, for many communities in the UK, very much a tainted symbol.

It might not feel that way to you. But I assume you don’t grow up catholic in a sectarian community. Or BAME in an area of regular EDL/BNP bullshit. And so on.

Borris · 28/05/2022 23:11

Yes. Going up on Wednesday 🇬🇧

RewildingAmbridge · 28/05/2022 23:31

Neighbour has done bunting and a fuck off Union Jack across the front of his house, looks like a far right rally

PurpleButterflyWings · 28/05/2022 23:37

100% yes. Got a bundle of stuff off ebay. 25 metres of Union Jack flags for outside, And other types of bunting and stuff for the windows and doors inside and out. (Incl 2 huge UJ flags, 4 ft X 5 ft!) Was gonna put it up Wednesday afternoon. (The 1st of June.) But quite a few people in my area have been sticking it up this weekend. My cul de sac of 20 people are having a street party, (Saturday) and 3 or 4 homes already have their stuff up. So I am putting ours up tomorrow!

Exactly this. ^ Anyone who derides and berates people for putting up Jublilee bunting or wearing Jubilee hats and crowns during the fucking JUBILEE, is a mean spirited, boring, sour faced oik. Don't join in if you don't want, but shove your bile and derision where the sun don't shine, because none of the people celebrating it and embracing it, give a shiny shit about your nasty toxic views.

This is mumsnet though, and there were bound to be some haters full of bile. They love it. They rush to these threads with their toxic little fingers bashing away their hateful views on the keyboard. Same as twitter. Don't like the Royals or the Jubilee, but just HAVE to comment on it, and rush to anything written about it, just so everyone knows how much they hate it and how pathetic they think people joining in are... Like the people joining in are meant to care about their wanky opinions!!! 😂

As I said, no-one gives a shit about your views, so crack on! But you're wasting your time, because you are spoiling NO-ONE's fun. Everyone will be having a ball while you sit there stewing in your own bile. Probably bitter coz you haven't been invited to a Jubilee party! Grin

In real life, almost everyone I know is joining in, with just 3 or 4 who are not bothered about it. NOBODY is being nasty and spiteful in real life. Only online.

Greensleeves · 28/05/2022 23:51

“toxic little fingers” would make a great band name

kittensinthekitchen · 28/05/2022 23:56

Lol calm down, Jan.

RoseMartha · 29/05/2022 00:26

No.
Havent got into the Jubilee vibe at all and I like the RF. Street parties are not my thing. In fact parties are not my thing. I used to dread hosting my teens parties when they were little.

Sortilege · 29/05/2022 00:30

Nope. My troublesome back has completely seized up so I’m marooned on the sofa with my phone and my tablet. I’m ambivalent about the forelock tugging anyway, so semi-relieved.

Our flag only belongs to the far right if we cede it to the far right. I wish we could manage a bit more healthy pride.

It’s weird. I’m a Londoner and loving London is allowed - loving any number of regional cities or the devolved nations is allowed - but not loving England or the UK.

Tromboleese · 29/05/2022 00:47

We’re putting up the bunting tomorrow, but have found some commonwealth bunting to go up for a change.

Sortilege · 29/05/2022 00:50

Where from @Tromboleese ?

Areyoiboredyet · 29/05/2022 00:51

Nope, not interested, I'm in Scotland and we our gala day on Saturday so I'm going to that instead, no street parties here as far as I know

GoingOnce · 29/05/2022 01:12

I’ve found some lovely floral vintage bunting that’s altogether naicer. I don’t see it as a celebration of monarchy per se (I mean, obviously it is) but I take it as an opportunity to celebrate our country and feel some pride in ourselves. There’s an odd determination in a lot of British (well, English) people to see national pride as an embarrassing thing. We don’t criticise other countries for their shows of patriotism. We value multi-culturalism - is our own not allowed to be part of it?

MushyPeasPrincess · 29/05/2022 01:12

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/05/2022 16:52

Ha, ha, nothing here, thank fuck - I’m in Scotland and it’s barely being mentioned despite some parts of the media trying desperately to raise the profile, lol.

Same here, also Scotland, nobody is interested including me Grin

CockingASnook · 29/05/2022 01:27

Absolutely not. That’s because I think the monarchy is absurd and outdated and should be stopped forthwith. But I have nothing against neighbours closing their street to traffic and having a knees-up. Should do it more often. Just wish it didn’t look like a UKIP rally with all the Union flags.

Viviennemary · 29/05/2022 01:30

Wouldn dream of it. Nobody round our way does thst kind of thing. Thank goodness

Pinklimey · 29/05/2022 03:15

No, I bought red white and blue flowers and hope they will come out in time (in their pot).

Looked at an old lady's card from the Queen for turning 100 the other day. I wonder if I will ever see one of those again!
