Neighbours over the road have put up loads of plastic bunting, when it's windy sounds like it's raining.

Floweryflora · 29/05/2022 07:20

No, it’s too cringe, but we do have a flagpole, which can only be seen when you’re in our garden, so we will run the Union Jack up that, it’s the only time I will put the Union Jack up and the only time I think it’s acceptable as it can be seen as sign of something unpleasant any other time.

I might also shove some round the gazebo as I’m having a party, but I’d not do the house.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 29/05/2022 07:49

Nope - I hate the look of bunting though.

I'm just looking forward to a four day weekend. No plans whatsoever to attend any street parties either - they sound like hell on earth to me 🤣

HadEnoughOfBears · 28/05/2022 17:01

Exactly this!

Judging by your name youre not in Govan or Ibrox?

Runnerduck34 · 29/05/2022 08:37

Oh go for it OP!
I am putting mine up today, have some in the loft from jubilee 10 years ago and the Olympics, so good excuse to use it again, I think it looks cheery and
we should reclaim our Union Jack.
I'm not particularly royalist, but what's wrong with being proud of being British and enjoying an extra long bank holiday weekend? !
As she's got older I have developed a soft spot for the queen, however of course by its very nature the monarchy is elitist and unfair, my teens are very anti and aren't keen on the idea of bunting (embarrassing) which another good reason to get it out 🤣

DMCWelshcakes · 29/05/2022 09:08

I won't be doing our house as I only have Welsh flag bunting & flags etc, but I've been knitting red, white and blue bunting for the church celebrations and will be attending their jubilee picnic.

The last few years have been so crappy that I think it's nice to be able to meet friends, drink tea and eat cake together again, whatever the reason for it.

I also think that this is probably the last ever long Royal reign so it's interesting from a historical point of view.

I'm not a fan of establishment privilege and I think the monarchy should be slimmed down considerably. But again I think this will happen over time as all the aged princes and princesses depart this life. The days of the monarch having 9 children and therefore loads of descendants who all get a title etc are gone.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 29/05/2022 09:44

I’ve caved and ordered a bit of bunting and a Union flag sponge cake from a local bakery.

lollipoprainbow · 29/05/2022 10:30

@PurpleButterflyWings well said !! Such crap written about UKIP, far right, Brexit, gammons yawn yawn yawn.

Bovrilly · 29/05/2022 10:33

Everyone will be having a ball while you sit there stewing in your own bile. Probably bitter coz you haven't been invited to a Jubilee party!

Hmm, quite a few of the people not engaging with the jubilee are in Scotland or Wales. You must be a bit hard of thinking if you don't understand that the royal family / Union Jack might mean something different there.

Unihorn · 29/05/2022 10:37

I quite fancied the hideous bunting with large photos of the Queen's face on but I'm in Wales and I don't think jubilee celebrations will be as overt here. I've only seen one house with bunting, and one town but that's on the borders where they're mostly English anyway.

mellongoose · 29/05/2022 10:37

I have! My most middle class purchase to date - £6 from M&S 🇬🇧😂

It looks lovely above the door and it's also my birthday this weekend so my favourite time of year.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 29/05/2022 10:41

No I’m on holiday so not there. To be fair I wouldn’t bother even if I was home.

newnamethanks · 29/05/2022 10:42

Don't forget our knitting and a blanket 😄

Ifailed · 29/05/2022 10:48

How much of this Chinese-made tat will end up in landfill?
There's some up in the high street, presumably put up by retailers, but I haven't seen any yet on peoples houses, nor am I aware of any planned street parties. I'm in Kent.

Well our won't. We'll put it away carefully and use it for the next event. (Coronation?)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 29/05/2022 11:11

that is why i dont want the 2022 bunting, i want some i can use again

OP posts:
brookstar · 29/05/2022 11:14

Yes, our bunting and flags are going up today.
It's a joint effort with our neighbours.

brookstar · 29/05/2022 11:17

purplebutterflywings I think I love you
😂❤️
Perfectly put!

Chemenger · 29/05/2022 11:24

I’m in Scotland, I haven’t seen any bunting, heard anyone talking about the jubilee or anything else. The university I work at isn’t closed on the bank holiday either so I’ll probably be in work, since it’s a busy time of year.

Mfsf · 29/05/2022 11:25

SoggyPaper · 28/05/2022 22:58

But it’s far too late. Other countries don’t necessarily have the same history of how their flag has been - and still is - used.

The Union Jack is, for many communities in the UK, very much a tainted symbol.

It might not feel that way to you. But I assume you don’t grow up catholic in a sectarian community. Or BAME in an area of regular EDL/BNP bullshit. And so on.

You are spot on . Those claiming otherwise should not trying to gaslight us . Some of us have been affected by brexit racism and xenophobia on a large scale , in fact thousands where and telling them oh but it’s our flag for sure it cannot men’s that is basically gaslighting and denying a obvious issue . The Union Jack represents a lot that probably shouldn’t , but it’s not us that are to blame for that . And do not let me get started on St. George’s flag , the sight of it and I literally feel in alert and if I can avoid a street with any I will for my own safety .

Gingernaut · 29/05/2022 11:27

Nope, although the local funeral director has gone to town

Very odd

Haudyourwheesht · 29/05/2022 11:28

*Anyone who derides and berates people for putting up Jublilee bunting or wearing Jubilee hats and crowns during the fucking JUBILEE, is a mean spirited, boring, sour faced oik. Don't join in if you don't want, but shove your bile and derision where the sun don't shine, because none of the people celebrating it and embracing it, give a shiny shit about your nasty toxic views.

This is mumsnet though, and there were bound to be some haters full of bile. They love it. They rush to these threads with their toxic little fingers bashing away their hateful views on the keyboard. Same as twitter. Don't like the Royals or the Jubilee, but just HAVE to comment on it, and rush to anything written about it, just so everyone knows how much they hate it and how pathetic they think people joining in are... Like the people joining in are meant to care about their wanky opinions!!! 😂

As I said, no-one gives a shit about your views, so crack on! But you're wasting your time, because you are spoiling NO-ONE's fun. Everyone will be having a ball while you sit there stewing in your own bile. Probably bitter coz you haven't been invited to a Jubilee party!

In real life, almost everyone I know is joining in, with just 3 or 4 who are not bothered about it. NOBODY is being nasty and spiteful in real life. Only online.*

Ooft. That's us told.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/05/2022 11:34

No. Enough put up by the council, though. Bunting and huge flags everywhere. The same council that is cancelling pensioners’ lunch clubs and turning off every other streetlight because of lack of funding 🙄

Abzs · 29/05/2022 11:46

Those people saying "Of course not, I'm in Scotland" clearly aren't in the same bit of Scotland that I am.
