@PurpleButterflyWings well said !! Such crap written about UKIP, far right, Brexit, gammons yawn yawn yawn.

The refusal to accept the experiences of British people who have experienced the Union Jack as a symbol of oppression and are, therefore, uncomfortable with it is not a good look.

It’s a just ‘such crap’ and a whole set of social and historical circumstances just don’t matter because they haven’t touched your life.

toomanychickens · 29/05/2022 11:53

No. Sorry I'm not into street parties, bunting and don't believe in the idea of a royal family.

AmyDudley · 29/05/2022 11:53

I'm not (I won't give my reasons or I'll be accused of spewing bile - despite the fact that I am quite happy and cheerful, no bitterness or bile to be found here)

Lots of folk have got bunting up in the streets round us, there is some kind of party in the park I think too. On a bus trip to hospital the other day I saw bollards decorated as knitted guardsmen, bollards wearing knitted crowns, letter boxes with the whole top fitted with a knitted crown or a knitted scene of royalness. The rowing boat outside a church that is used as a planter has been painted red white and blues. Its jubilee central, and the knitters have obviously been out in force. I find it all rather bizarre, but I live in a part of the country associated with royalty, so to be expected I suppose.

I was around for the silver jubilee (yes I am that old) and IIRC there was more bunting and general hoo haa about that, so maybe people are getting a bit jubileed out. Not the queens fault of course - she's probably as fed up of it all as many of us and can't wait for it to be over so she can go back to her horses.

Not half as bad as in England and I lone near Aberdeen that is unionists wet dream .
the local village as something on but the bunting is not Union jack’s at least it’s just colourful ones

Tromboleese · 29/05/2022 13:55

@Sortilege ebay for the commonwealth bunting.

ginghamstarfish · 31/05/2022 23:31

I live in Scotland and have seen no bunting nor any other jubilee declarations. Drove over the border to England today, and what a contrast! Schools, pubs, streets, village greens decorated, signs up, then back to Scotland - and nothing.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 31/05/2022 23:44

Driving through our local villages today - no bunting or flags. Thursday is lighting of the beacons and bring your own picnic. Saturday sees every village having a village fete at the same time - with bring your own picnic. So that’s summer done and dusted in one day!

Same here- I am in scotland too, I haven't seen a single house or pub decorated.
UK wide chain stores like tesco are decorated with union jacks, and shelves stuffed with bunting, flags, mugs etc. They are going to be left with a huge amount of unsold tat- no one is buying it here.
Stores have misjudged the situation in scotland.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 01/06/2022 06:27

Loads round here (London suburb). I have no beef with Liz but decorating and mingling is not my thing at all, so shall respectfully leave it to those who want to participate.

SundayTeatime · 01/06/2022 07:29

I’ve not seen any, and I’m in London zone 2.

emmathedilemma · 01/06/2022 07:46

bananaboats · 28/05/2022 17:21

Scotland here too, no bunting to be seen!

Same, I haven’t seen anything relating to the jubilee!

Stickytreacle · 01/06/2022 08:06

Nope, no bunting here as I hate parties and all the associated noise and disruption they bring when I'd prefer to enjoy my garden in peace and quiet. I'm also not pro royal, so it would be hypocritical to join in.
If that makes me sour and miserable then so be it, because I really don't care if others take offence at my lack of participation.

HollysBush · 01/06/2022 08:11

Putting a string of union flags up out the front of house today. Having a nice little gathering of friends/family on Sat to share some food and watch the concert in the evening. Any excuse for a party here!

IhatMMc · 01/06/2022 08:12

No, I'm not putting bunting up outside your house OP 😀 I'm not decorating my own either. Lots of people have where I live though. There's a jubilee event in my local park which I will take my DD to, but if I didn't have a child I really wouldn't bother. I just want her to be able to say she did something for the jubilee, in years to come.

sashh · 01/06/2022 08:17

I might put up a pic of the Sex Pistols

Abzs · 29/05/2022 11:46

Those people saying "Of course not, I'm in Scotland" clearly aren't in the same bit of Scotland that I am.

Yes, and they're blatantly ignoring the 174 (at last count!) Platinum Jubilee events being held across Scotland too.

LadyCatStark · 01/06/2022 08:49

I’ve ordered some but not in Union Jack colours because I’m not proud of my country right now and no queen’s faces as it feels so disjointed to be celebrating a very rich family that don’t actually do anything when there’s so many terrible things happening. I’ve bought some multi coloured fabric bunting that I can reuse time and time again rather than nasty plastic stuff that’ll end up in the bin on Monday.

SkankingWombat · 01/06/2022 08:49

Grinning at the suggestion that those who are against papering their house in flags are oiks. In our area it is quite the opposite, oiks and flag hanging/waving has a very strong positive correlation. The flag hangers in our village are also the ones who've taken to social media telling everyone to be warned that they are closing the streets, despite not being bothered to apply for a permit, and telling people who have concerns to fuck off. We are away for the weekend and quite glad we won't be home for the inevitable brawling, police attendance, and screaming in the street TBH. There is a whole community party organised on the green (that the oiks have publically slated), which we'd attend if home as it will be a lovely tradtional get together with a tug of war/sack races etc, but without the aggressive flag waving.

We have bought a small length of bunting for our tent to show willing at the campsite we're going to as they are holding Jubilee celebrations, but are uneasy about it and it is very much done out of obligation. DH and DCs aren't white. DH has been on the receiving end of National Pride many times, and despite being only 5 and 8yo, our DCs have also already experienced rascist comments. For us, the flag is too closely woven with rabid nationalism and racism. I don't agree with PPs trying to reclaim it from the far right, in the same way I find young black people trying to reclaim the N-word troublesome.

LadyCatStark · 01/06/2022 08:50

Forgot to add, it’s the community aspect I’m celebrating (and I’m on the committee that’s our month of effort into organising the events of the weekend).

HunsNetterVom · 01/06/2022 08:57

loads of bunting here and everything that doesn't move has been decorated in our town
Bands are due to play on the green and several huge community picnics have been organised

anotherneutralname · 01/06/2022 09:06

I have decided to bunt. But not red/white/blue or flags. I want stuff I can re-use for any random occasion so have gone for multi-coloured.

Ifailed · 01/06/2022 09:10

I noticed a head-line in the Mail in the newsagents about 12 million attending jubilee parties. That means 55 million wont be, and they can't all live in Scotland!

ThereWillBeSnacks · 01/06/2022 09:14

Absolutely not. Can't wait for the whole palaver to be over (and I'm pretty sure Brenda feels the same way).

Nothing on our street so far and no mutterings about street parties either, thank god.

WatermelonSugarEye · 01/06/2022 09:30

We've got plastic Union Jack bunting up after 19yr old DS bought some. Be warned, it is extremely cheap crap and has marked the paintwork and Gate where the colours have run in the rain.
DS seems remarkably "into" all this, there is even Talk of a trifle. He is defo not BNP demographic either, being mixed race/black.

Yes, and they're blatantly ignoring the 174 (at last count!) Platinum Jubilee events being held across Scotland too.

174 events across a nation of over 5 million people isn’t that impressive really.

i bet there were more that 174 Eurovision parties in Scotland, for example.
