Thanks for new thread

I posted on the other thread but I’ll repost here in case anyone can answer.

What are the reasons for Putin wanting two areas of Ukraine to be independents? Are they predominantly Russians in those areas? Or are they seeking independence ?

Wrongkindofovercoat · 07/03/2022 19:57

Also pulling through from the last thread;

Dominic Cummings - anyone heard his take on the situation , spent quite a bit of time over there.

Poster/meme/Flyer from Conservatives, bit of a Reservoir dogs vibe or just me ?

A significant proportion are Russians and he wants to be able to access the Crimea by land.

Back in 2014, there was a genuine separatist movement in eastern Ukraine that was heavily supported by Russia, in terms of men and money and weapons. They have been fighting a war with the Ukrainian government ever since.

This benefits Russia because as long as these two separatist regions are fighting the Ukrainian government, Ukraine will not be admitted into the EU or NATO. They are a constant distraction and drain on Ukraine. They give Putin some leverage over what happens in Ukraine.

Thanks for the thread.

The poster's tragic. Looks like something someone knocked up using Microsoft Publisher in Year 7 IT back in the early noughties.

Hey all, sorry I've been mega busy in work today!

Going to catch up. Will be back soon 😊

Motorina · 07/03/2022 20:00

@Shuuu they are predominantly Russian speaking Ukrainians. There has been unrest for years funded and provoked by Russia, but the majority of the population want to be Ukrainian.

We know this two ways. Firstly, by the results of the 1991 Referendum, which is broken down my region en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_Ukrainian_independence_referendum Secondly, by the way they welcomed the Russian 'liberators' with bullets rather than flowers.

Can you imagine MNetters doing this?

This is nice:

A German multi-billionaire has rented three hotels at the Polish-German border for three+ months for #Ukraine refugees, turning meeting rooms into playrooms for children & kindergarten teachers. Kitchens will provide a breakfast & dinner buffet. Will likely cost him $5 million

Its seriously BAD. Genuinely to do that from scratch should have taken less time than it took me to recreate.

Its 15mins work. Tops.

Re: Zelensky’s speech to the house tomorrow.

If the US has categorically said no to a “no fly zone” even with the emotive pleas, why would the UK parliament agree to it?

1991 is a really long time ago. Have there been calls for another referendum?

Motorina · 07/03/2022 20:06

@MrsTerryPratchett not that I can find. But there have been numerous elections since and, as far as I can tell picking through the details of the parties/candidates standing, I can't see any meaningful support at the ballot box for independence. Mind, different political system, different parties, so I defer to the expertise of those who know the politics of the country. But, from the perspective of ignorance, I'm not seeing it.

Flapjacker48 · 07/03/2022 20:08

@AgnesWestern Aside from the fact that there is not going to be a no-fly zone, the UK would not be able to do one unilaterally anyway, it would need the combined NATO (but especially the USAF) air forces.

DovesofPeace · 07/03/2022 20:08

Thank you op.

This has been such a good thread series, I wonder if I could ask that the intelligent posters of Mumsnet to Keep it balanced? Pretty please?

It's tiring wading through the post's that seem to be on more of a " let's use this crisis to attack the evil Tories And turn, every single, move any of them make into something awful".

Please.

It's not Brexit, it's not a Political anthem And it's not the Westminders thread.

I wonder if another thread should be started specially looking at our politicians handling of this And then we could keeping this with clear information about the crisis?

Thank you

Shuuu · 07/03/2022 20:10

Thank you for everyone who answered my question. I cannot see Zelensky agreeing to Putins demands. I think Ukraine still wants to join NATO probably even more now than before
