@LittleRedYoshi you never commit all your troops to one campaign - dangerous to have all your eggs in one basket.

You’ll always have some on training, some on recovery/rest. Plus Russia’s borders are huge, they will always have commitments elsewhere in the country.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 07/03/2022 21:05

The Russian army is apparently 900,000 strong - any theories as to why Putin has "only" sent 150,000 into this conflict? It's unnerving me a bit (i.e. does he have something else planned)

I think you could have stopped at 'The Russian army is apparently 900,00 strong' , so what essentially happens is, they have a big parade to pretend to Putin that it is 900,000 strong, and the same soldiers do a quick circuit round the back of the Kremlin, same with the tanks etc. That way the real powers that be can syphon off money mean't for the armed forces on the quiet. Until Putin decides he wants an Empire , then they force a load of conscript kids onto the frontline.

DovesofPeace · 07/03/2022 21:06

Little red , I can't fathom any of it.

I've read all the various reasons as to why he's done this, I've read about corruption hollowing out the Russian / Putin army and no one's brave enough to fill him in.

One small conspiracy part of me does think is this part of a wider plan with other places like china?

I can't fathom any of it.

Can you imagine MNetters doing this?

Judging by the preppers threads and Zombie Apocalypse discussions, yes. Possibly with a stolen tank and a bottle of gin inside it.
DovesofPeace · 07/03/2022 21:08

V true, one kind.

MrsFezziwig · 07/03/2022 21:12

@DovesofPeace

Thank you op.

This has been such a good thread series, I wonder if I could ask that the intelligent posters of Mumsnet to Keep it balanced? Pretty please?

It's tiring wading through the post's that seem to be on more of a " let's use this crisis to attack the evil Tories And turn, every single, move any of them make into something awful".

Please.

It's not Brexit, it's not a Political anthem And it's not the Westminders thread.

I wonder if another thread should be started specially looking at our politicians handling of this And then we could keeping this with clear information about the crisis?

Thank you

Personally @DovesofPeace I like the fact that a lot of different aspects of the invasion are covered in the thread, because I’ve learned a lot. It may go off at a tangent temporarily but then returns to the main theme. We seem to have managed fine for ten threads so not sure why the need to tinker around with it on the other hand if you want to take issue with the placemarkers I’m with you all the way

Home Office saying 300 visas have been issued

Thanks to those who answered my question - great points, feeling better about it already! Grin

Motorina · 07/03/2022 21:19

300? Whoop de fucking do.

I've just sent an outraged missive to my MP. Via www.theyworkforyou.com, which I recommend as an easy way to do so.

Good news @DuncinToffee but what's with the term 'surged' ? Sounds like a nursing term, 'he was backed up to his small intestine, so I surged him with a phosphate' !

FacebookPhotos · 07/03/2022 21:21

Does anyone know much about currency valuations, stock markets etc? I saw today that the value of the rouble has fallen, which presumably means the cost of imports to Russia will increase. But does that also mean that the value of their exports (particularly oil and gas) will increase too?

EezyOozy · 07/03/2022 21:22

@FacebookPhotos wouldn't it mean the price of their exports decreases for us, the buyers? Although they could just inflate the prices. Hopefully we will work towards not needing Russian oil and gas .

RedToothBrush · 07/03/2022 21:23

300! Wow. The Irish have welcomed 600 so far. Israel 3000. And we are proudly saying 300 as if its a good thing?

RedToothBrush · 07/03/2022 21:26

I also suspect he needs to keep just a few on borders elsewhere just in case somebody has something else planned ….

WEEEEEEELLLLLLL

Funny you should say that....

Japan has made a point of declaring the Southern Kurils as their sovereign territory today. This isn't a new dispute....

The Kuril Islands dispute, known as the Northern Territories dispute in Japan, is a territorial dispute between Japan and the Russian Federation over the ownership of the four southernmost Kuril Islands. The Kuril Islands are a chain of islands that stretch between the Japanese island of Hokkaido at their southern end and the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula at their northern end. The islands separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific Ocean. The four disputed islands, like other islands in the Kuril chain that are not in dispute, were annexed by the Soviet Union following the Kuril Islands landing operation at the end of World War II

This dispute does date much further back though.

Since 2005 there's been heightened tension over who owns them...

It is not exactly generous, I'm ashamed that our government is not being more helpful. These are people in desperate situations, we should be supporting them, processing visas in much higher numbers and not diverting them to Paris because we cannot organise a visa centre at short notice.

nanohana · 07/03/2022 21:27

Bit of a light relief interlude - today when I told DS that Zelensky was the voice of the Ukrainian Paddington Bear, he said 'Well, he should give Putin a very hard stare!'.

Gingerwarthog · 07/03/2022 21:28

Guardian is carrying a story about 2 Scottish guys who have rescued three students trapped in Sumy. They previously rescued a mum and her sick baby.
They are ordinary men, gardeners, who have been driving people out of horrific situations in their van.

Pretty obvious what PMQs will be about and TV interviews tomorrow.

We claim to be world beating and world leading in many areas. I am sure we could do better with this

Interesting diversion by Japan, they were well peeved that Russia invaded their air space last week.
