Not what I imagined “liberation” to look like. #Kherson

Russia is close to sabotaging the Iran nuclear deal
Difficult talks in Vienna to revive the 2015 international accord have become tangled in the war in Ukraine

All this. Not good.

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2022 15:02

Hugo Gye @hugogye
US pollster @cygnal has polled residents of Ukraine on their view of certain countries and leaders:
EU +42.2
Nato -16.8
UK +56
Biden +25.8
Johnson +49.6
Zelensky +79
Putin -86.7

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2022 15:04

Apparently we are up to 760 visas...

borntobequiet · 09/03/2022 15:05

Iranian oil would be a very useful in replacing supplies from Russia, so it’s easy to see why Russia doesn’t want this, especially now.

Alwayscheerful · 09/03/2022 15:06

$478 seems such a low figure compared to the UK or Ukraine?

NEW: Visa centre in Lille will be a 'pop-up'. It will NOT offer appointments or walk-in access for those seeking to come to the UK. The most vulnerable cases in Calais will be taken there for biometrics but Home Office will not publicise location and capacity will be small
It will be up and running properly tomorrow but I understand those who are not deemed to be vulnerable and who turn up at Calais anyway will be told to go to Paris or Brussels to fill out correct forms. (You might ask who isn't vulnerable after fleeing a war zone, really?)

It’s probably similar to drug cartels and similar Mafia style gangs not having mortgages or credit card debt. Everything is paid in cash or favours and isn’t seen by the tax man.
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/03/2022 15:14

Someone on Twitter has referred to the Lille/Calais/Brussels visa fiasco as a 'sadistic game of hide and seek'.

The British govt is being utterly cruel.

eglantine7 · 09/03/2022 15:16

Fingers crossed for Iranian oil and less need for ties with Russia for the Iranian nation.

Peregrina · 09/03/2022 15:21

UK +56

I assume this is the provision of military aid - not aid to help those fleeing.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/03/2022 15:26

This is horrific.

@BBCYaldaHakim
BREAKING: Ukrainian MP Dmitry Gurin tells me a maternity complex has been bombed in the southern port city of Mariupol "It's all one complex -- a maternity and children's hospital. A lot of dead and wounded women. We don’t know about children and newborn yet"

Alwayscheerful · 09/03/2022 15:27

Can someone more knowledgeable please explain in more detail
What does the uk 56 represent please?

Also
The Russian $478 ?

jgw1 · 09/03/2022 15:28

Are these visas like vaccines? According to Boris we did vaccines best because we gave a dose first. By the same logic we are accepting Ukrainians really badly even if after the initial shambles things get better.

I'd say anyone with children is automatically vulnerable. I assume that's not their criterion.

Surely anyone who is a refugee is vulnerable, which as far as I can tell is everyone who might be applying.

I have to say in context of what is actually going on in Ukraine I’m somewhat Hmm as to how that poll was done, let alone why anybody thinks that poll was worth doing….

Well yes, but if you have to make a distinction, children are de facto vulnerable.

It's like housing. It's a human right and everyone should have it but if you're prioritising by vulnerability, you put children on that list.

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 15:45

I thought all hospitals had moved underground?

52andblue · 09/03/2022 15:45

I've just seen the clip of a (small) Odesa brass band made up of volunteers playing: 'Don't Worry, be Happy' in front of the sandbags protecting the Odesa Opera & Ballet Theatre. Winning hearts & minds.
