300! Wow. The Irish have welcomed 600 so far. Israel 3000. And we are proudly saying 300 as if its a good thing?
Actually 1800 to Ireland so far, 486 arrived yesterday according to main Irish news website.
RedToothBrush · 07/03/2022 21:35

Julian Borger @julianborger
Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, is in the Security Council, claiming Ukrainians are shelling themselves.
(Echoes of the Bosnian Serb army which would routinely say similar as it bombed Sarajevo)

Eliot Higgins @EliotHiggins
There's identifiable remains of cluster munitions either exclusively used by Russia or manufactured in the last few years when there were no Russian arms sales to Ukraine being documented at the sites of attacks on civilians. Explain that one, Vasily.

Thanks - will check that out.

In the bbc news update it says a forth round of talks is set for tomorrow... seems a bit sudden for another round already?

No I think this one was being talked about and planned on Sunday.

From the home office Twitter:

The UK Government’s Ukraine Family Scheme is the first visa scheme in the world to launch since President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

If this is true (seriously, I do not trust these people) it appears that the “world first” they were bleating on about earlier is a new visa scheme. Meanwhile, many other countries simply do away with visas for Ukrainian refugees and put their bureaucratic efforts into finding shelter and food for women and children fleeing war.

My god I hate Patel. I feel another ranting email to my MP coming on.

RedToothBrush · 07/03/2022 21:44

Callum May @callummay
300 visas issued so far by the Home Office

286 Ukrainians turned back from the UK border at Calais, the city's sub-prefect, Véronique Deprez-Boudier, has told the BBC.

wouldn't it mean the price of their exports decreases for us, the buyers? Although they could just inflate the prices.

I suspect they’ll do the latter.

Not really, Ukraine wants to have someone/something left and Russia is well on its way to bankruptcy, Putin might be maniacal but that isn't a situation he will do well in.

@Gingerwarthog

Guardian is carrying a story about 2 Scottish guys who have rescued three students trapped in Sumy. They previously rescued a mum and her sick baby. They are ordinary men, gardeners, who have been driving people out of horrific situations in their van.
I can’t believe how brave they are. I hope everyone else trapped in Sumy also gets out. The footage of the Indian students at the end of last week was very distressing.
Tuba437 · 07/03/2022 21:46

@RedToothBrush ah ok, I did read on twitter that both foreign ministers maybe meeting in antalya on Thursday. Not sure how trustworthy that was though.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/03/2022 21:47

All power to the Scottish gardeners but they’re putting themselves and others at terrible risk. They’re talking of going back - what happens when they’re targeted by the Russians and taken hostage? Paraded in the Russian media, bruised and battered, with UK media howling for them to be rescued? Now, assuming the government sends in a rescue squad, not only do Special Forces have to put their lives at risk but it hands Putin the opportunity to say “There were British boots on Ukrainian soil, we view that as a declaration of war”. And we’re off to the races.

I can see why they’re doing it but, like a no-fly zone, they just can’t.

Peregrina · 07/03/2022 21:47

I think we need a war cabinet or if that's too inflammatory for "Putin" the raging toddler that we have to keep " calm" then something more gentle. However I think we need to draw on the best brain's and experience cross parties to a greater degree.

I certainly think we could do with that, but it won't happen unless the Tory Party ousts Johnson for a starter. Even if they did, we would then see Truss fancy her chances as leader.

But then, you don't want us to talk about politics or the Tory Party. Note that if we had a Labour Government behaving in the same way as Johnson's is, I would be saying the same to them.

DuncinToffee · 07/03/2022 21:48

More and more people are arriving in Calais. On the ground, the Home Office's arrangements are really not meeting needs. Quick thread, based on what refugees are telling us 1/

Chitchatchatter · 07/03/2022 21:49

@DovesofPeace

I'm talking about framing everything through the I hate Tories lens and I hate Brexit.

Critical around specific issue's with Boris eg the hazy fog around the Russian, lords peerage, the 50 refugee stuff is obviously justified.
But much of these posts are now descending into constant critiscm and it's getting boring.

UK isn't doing nothing, apparently we have been training the Ukraine before the attacks and providing arm's.

We pushed for the Nord stream to be cancelled etc.
Just an observation otherwise just make them , Westminders do Ukraine?

Westminders (sic) do Ukraine? That’s really quite offensive.

These threads have been anything but, they have been intelligent informative discussions around this tragic situation.

I for one will continue to criticise, for example, Priti Patel’s incompetence, actual or strategic, to formulate a proper response to the settlement of Ukrainian refugees in this country which has been nothing short of shameful.

Please do not try to police my right to do so.

changeyourname11111 · 07/03/2022 21:52

It’s strategic IMO. They can’t bear to do anything which might threaten the anti-freedom of movement vote which is partly responsible for putting them in power.

Copenhagenoffice · 07/03/2022 21:56

Priti Patel is a disgrace. Emailing my MP first thing tomorrow.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 07/03/2022 21:57

And that is the joy of living in the UK, we are free to criticise all politicians regardless of their political leaning, at any time, if we feel they aren't pulling their weight or are doing things we disagree with. Lucky us.

Chitchatchatter · 07/03/2022 22:02

I’ve already done so.
EsmaCannonball · 07/03/2022 22:04

In the recent debacle in Afghanistan, wasn't it discovered that high-up people in the Afghan army had artificially inflated the number of soldiers and pocketed the money that would have paid and equipped those non-existent troops? It's been suggested that the same has been going on in Russia. It's a mafia state.

MMBaranova · 07/03/2022 22:04

While we can be rightfully critical of the UK and its slow response to the refugee crisis, the UKs stock on the ground in Ukraine is very high. Getting the NLAWs speedily to Ukraine before the conflict started (2000 on 19th January), for instance, helped blunt the advances. As well as Javelin, sniper training, and other military equipment, the UK has provided funding especially through the World Bank to help keep the Ukraine administration functioning.

stillherenow · 07/03/2022 22:09

My MP is Jeremy Hunt wannabe PM. Will email tomorrow , surely this is his opportunity to put some ground between him and Truss .
