Talk me out of a Velvetiser

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 10:34

My boys both love a hot chocolate.
I DO use gadgets - my soup maker is out at least once a week.
I don't mind wiping it out.
We prefer HC made with milk to water.

But... £100.

Talk me down from this ledge of temptation!

Buy one of the much cheaper milk frothers from Amazon. For around £30 they do the same thing and you can use chocolate in them in the same way.

Hoppinggreen · 05/02/2022 10:44

I bought DD a shaker thingy from The Chocolate society for Christmas.
She says it’s just as good as a Velvetiser

ChickenStripper · 05/02/2022 10:44

We use the Nespresso frother - that's half the price of the Velvetiser.

LSLLM · 05/02/2022 10:45

My husband bought us one. Wtf is the nonsense 😂 I can’t believe he spent £100 on something you could use a kettle or a saucepan for

flowery · 05/02/2022 10:46

I love my Velvetiser, it’s the copper one and it’s lovely.

However, pp is right, a milk frother will do the same thing. DS1 sometimes makes hot chocolates for us all, and I found out the other day that, for speed, he does them simultaneously in the velvetiser and the milk frother, so he can do two at once. I hadn’t noticed there was a difference.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 05/02/2022 10:47

DS loves his. And he knows it was expensive so is very careful with it and makes sure it is cleaned properly after each use. And it looks nice in the kitchen.

I'm not helping, am I? Grin

TeenPlusCat · 05/02/2022 10:47

Love my Velvetiser. Got it for Christmas 2020 and used it pretty much daily since then. A hug in a mug.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 05/02/2022 10:49

I love mine!
Use it for hot chocolate, lattes, machiatos and making foamy sauces to finish off dishes.
It was a gift though so I probably would of just bought myself the dupe if I was paying

Cookerhood · 05/02/2022 10:49

Aldi do a cheap copy. They also do an even cheaper milk frother which does the same thing for £20.

Cissyandflora · 05/02/2022 10:52

We have one. Have not used it this winter. I don’t really get it. It stirs milk and chocolate whilst heating. Nothing special. Doesn’t froth. It’s just a stirrer.

Abraxan · 05/02/2022 10:54

Dd has one and uses it all the time with her friend at university.
It wasn't cheap but it makes lovely hot chocolate and she loves it; she claims it was a fab present.

However, I'm sure you can get similar results in other ways. Just won't be quite as simple as pressing a button, but not massively so.

silentpool · 05/02/2022 10:54

I use my Nespresso milk frother for this. Still going strong after 10 years too.

I have one of these and gave my velvetiser to my sister as the shaker is so much better
howdidigettobe50something · 05/02/2022 11:01

We have a Lidl electric milk frother that does exactly the same thing and was cheap. I use it for frothy cappuccino and others for hot chocolate.. brilliant but I certainly wouldn't have spent£100 on one.

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 11:03

Browsing Amazon dupes!

I love my Velvetiser . I have bought one for a friend too as I like mine so much.

Ionsion · 05/02/2022 11:07

I was given one for Christmas. I soon used up the chocolate I was given with it so ordered the selection box and two more pouches. So I spent over £30 on hot chocolate and it was all gone in under a month!

Persephonegoddess · 05/02/2022 11:08

Join HC vip then you get £25/35 off every so often, much more buyable.... I Iove mine, not sure cheap version would cut it.

spagbog5 · 05/02/2022 11:11

We adore our velvetiser !!

We have a milk frothed too and it really is better in the velvetiser- especially with a generous slug of Baileys Smile

Me too.
NightmareSlashDelightful · 05/02/2022 11:13

Yeah the shaker is much better IMO. The Chocolate Society chocolate/flakes that you get with it are also very good. I also get choc from Pendragon Drinks (I think that’s what they’re called).

I do like Hotel Chocolat for a lot of stuff but there are better options than a Velvetiser IMO.

supercritter · 05/02/2022 11:15

Lavazza modo mio is what you want

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/02/2022 11:17

Why?! It sounds fun. Family valentines gift??

RosesAndHellebores · 05/02/2022 11:19

Just use a saucepan, bring to the boil, milky froth, and whisk.

You aren't buying a better produced hot drink, you are buying marketing.

Frothy coffee is an Italian cafe thing of the 50s/60s. Good quality coffee needs nothing more than a pot or cafetiere and hot water. If you want it frothy use milk and the saucepan/whisk method in private homes.

CiderWithLizzie · 05/02/2022 11:19

My DD loves her velvetiser - she’s taken it to uni and I might have to buy another one!
