Talk me out of a Velvetiser

My boys both love a hot chocolate.
I DO use gadgets - my soup maker is out at least once a week.
I don't mind wiping it out.
We prefer HC made with milk to water.

But... £100.

Talk me down from this ledge of temptation!

Got mine Xmas 2020.
Love it too! Makes the best hot choc.
Even put the cheap powder in & it tastes lovely.

Agree it is expensive but it would make a great present.

LadyRoughDiamond · 05/02/2022 11:55

Just buy a milk frother - it’s exactly the same thing with a setting for frothed or warmed milk. Plus, with a cheap stove-top mokka pot you can also make posh coffee! Honestly, it’s so much more versatile.

Rainbowshit · 05/02/2022 11:57

Absolutely love our velvitiser. Has hugely cut down in the mess the kids used to make when making hot chocolate and it just makes such delicious frothy hot chocolate. So easy to clean too.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/02/2022 12:01

@Phormiumjester just think about what you could do with that £100.

CoconutQueen · 05/02/2022 12:03

What a stupid waste of money.
Just use a saucepan.

Roasteros · 05/02/2022 12:03

@Happycow

I think the velvetiser is made by Dualit.. whose own one is half the price, has the same good milk capacity, and takes up a bit less space as the handle is curved
I thought that too, so I bought a Dualit at Christmas and it's great. About 50 quid I think.
MontyDonsBlueScarf · 05/02/2022 12:04

This is a bit of a specialised use but... DH has cancer and is on food supplements because he is rapidly losing weight. Most of his life is about taking boring food/medication that someone is pushing him to take. But I can make chocolate in the velvetiser using half milk and half neutral flavoured supplements, it's a luxury drink and a treat he looks forward to. I got one on offer for well under £100 including sachets but even at full price it would have been worth every penny.

No.

@Phormiumjester

Irrationally annoyed with the people telling me to use a pan Grin

Stop talking me out of what I wanted talking out of! Away with your common sense. Smile

I may not have been clear there about what I was saying no to. I mean, no to talking you out of it ......
Mmr224 · 05/02/2022 12:12

I'd say they do different things. I got one for Christmas when it was on offer so £80 with 2 cups instead of £100 for just the machine. I use it most days sometimes for hot milk sometimes for chocolate. I still use the £60 Lavassa frother we've had for 3-4 years as well, they do different things. The milk frother takes 4 mins and the velvetiser half that. I can add cocoa powder to the spinner for hot chocolate but not grated chocolate as it just isn't hot enough/ doesn't work I've tried lots! The velvetiser will make amazing hot chocolate with real grated chocolate in 2 mins. The spinner has a cold spin mode so I sometimes make a espresso and add a shot of cold frothy milk or cocoa for a iced mocca. I sometimes but the hotel chocolate sachets as a treat but they work out at about £1 a sachet not on offer.
F or plain hot chocolate I buy the 30p 100g bars of smart price plain chocolate from asda, tesco, Sainabury, Aldi etc and grate them. A bar makes three really good chocolates for 1-5p go. I use a rotary grater and do a few bars at time then store in the fridge in a clipit.

icelollycraving · 05/02/2022 12:12

We have one, it’s used every day. Not for me, but for Ds and dh.

bumblingbovine49 · 05/02/2022 12:14

Aldi do a much cheaper one

Mmr224 · 05/02/2022 12:15

Should say I also heat milk in the velvetiser when making sauces with milk so make s roux and add warm milk for cheese sauce etc, it's really handy since it's sitting there anyway.

RockinHorseShit · 05/02/2022 12:16

I use my nutribullet with raw organic cacao & cocoa, bit of syrup, milk & water... it's better than hotel chocolat, even the teen thinks so & has already put order in for one of her own when she leaves home, as she uses it for homemade Shakeaways too so much for it being healthy

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/02/2022 12:16

It’s worth every penny 😋

Lilymossflower · 05/02/2022 12:18

Velvetiser sounds like a lovehoney item

Bimblybomeyelash · 05/02/2022 12:18

It blows my mind how much Hot
Chocolate is being drunk by you all!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 05/02/2022 12:22

Even my lazy arse nightmare of a daughter manages to use hers and also keep it clean.
Best purchase of last year.

LittleMissPerfect28 · 05/02/2022 12:22

Can't talk you out of it as I love mine!!

But if you order a subscription of hot chocolate you can get it for £50.

They also have offers on all tear round, don't pay £100 for it.

JimmyShoo · 05/02/2022 12:23

I resisted for ages then finally caved. I love it, so much better than the frother I had.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2022 12:26

I have one.

It is over priced. If I were buying one again, I would get the Dualit one which is bigger and does proper cold drinks.

StiltonIsLife · 05/02/2022 12:30

I'm interested in velvetiser now... do you have to use milk or could you substitute some of it with water?

TellMeItsNotTrue · 05/02/2022 12:35

I'd say don't waste your money.... By buying alternatives!

I put it off for about two years, I tried a few alternatives and they got stuck in a cupboard quickly

I finally decided to bite the bullet and get one... Oh... My... God! I still wasn't sure if it would be worth it, but I'd read so many reviews, I'd seen posts on MN, and I decided to buy one as our family Christmas present. It gets used multiple times every day, our milk consumption has massively increased. At first it was being used so much and I was waiting for the novelty to wear off, 6 weeks later and it definitely hasn't! Still used multiple times a day and I can't see it ever ending up in a cupboard

My parents actually had hot chocolate from our velvetiser and didn't stop talking about it, they had a big anniversary in January so I bought them one, they did say there was a problem with my gift to them... It didn't come with a cow 😂 they love it

It seems to be the talk of the family, everyone wants one now 😂

It makes amazing latte etc as well as hot chocolate, is easy to clean and easy to use. My only regret is waiting 2 years and buying cheaper alternatives that ended up costing me more in the long run as they ended up in a cupboard fairly quickly

Dh Colleague had one from Aldi. Told us all about how great it was and how daft we were to have spent money of the velvetiser instead.

Unfortunately colleague's one is broken after a short amount of time. DD's velvetiser is a couple of years old and going strong. 🤷‍♀️
