Talk me out of a Velvetiser

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 10:34

My boys both love a hot chocolate.
I DO use gadgets - my soup maker is out at least once a week.
I don't mind wiping it out.
We prefer HC made with milk to water.

But... £100.

Talk me down from this ledge of temptation!

They are excellent get one.

Rosiiiiie · 05/02/2022 12:37

I have one 🙈 I love it! Go for it!

Vanillabourbon · 05/02/2022 12:50

I love my velvetiser! I received it for my birthday last year & have used it nearly daily since. It makes the best hot chocolate (works well with chocolate powder so you don't have to keep buying the hotel chocolat pouches) I also use it for velvetising milk for lattes which are better than Starbucks!
Look out for codes online, you shouldn't have to pay full price.

hilariousnamehere · 05/02/2022 12:58

Sorry, can't - they're epic! I resisted for ages then got the SMEG one for my studio, which was a bit more expensive but has a much bigger capacity. Better for client meetings, plus my other business is chocolate and we're planning to release hot choc later this year to early next, so didn't want a choc branded one. One of my besties has a velvetiser though and neither of us would be without our hot choc makers now! Of the two (yes we've tested them side by side Grin) I'd say the SMEG gets the drinks hotter and the velvetiser slightly smoother tasting, but there's not much in it.

As pp said, there's an offer for email subscribers where if you subscribe for the sachets you can get a velvetiser for £50. Friend also had one that was a bit temperamental and they were really good at replacing without fuss.

hilariousnamehere · 05/02/2022 12:59

Ooh and mum got me a Clementine hot chocolate flakes box from m&s for Christmas so when my current HC box runs out I'll test those - hoping they're equally lovely!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 05/02/2022 13:02

I love mine and use it for lattes and hot chocolate.
It is not good for the waist line though

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 05/02/2022 13:04

Sorry, think you should get it. I bought one for Xmas a few years back thinking the same about the cost, but the whole family use it. I dont normally like hot chocolate as it is too sweet but this is amazing

MissMinutes24 · 05/02/2022 13:05

@Phormiumjester

Browsing Amazon dupes!
We have the Dualit milk frother which is absolutely identical - they make the velvetizer too
donkey86 · 05/02/2022 13:06

Another vote here for the chocolate society shaker. It’s brilliant and so much cheaper.

Isonthecase · 05/02/2022 13:08

They do quite good discounts every so often, I bought mine with £35 off around black Friday. For me the comparison looking was the fancy hope chocolate I was buying out at £4 a pop as it feels fancy enough to be a replacement for them. I used charbonnel flakes which are cheaper than the proper ones and barista oat milk.

SisterAgatha · 05/02/2022 13:08

I can’t talk you down I’m afraid. I’m in a committed relationship with mine and I even have a subscription now. It’s the best thing ever.

SisterAgatha · 05/02/2022 13:09

And yes, dualit is exactly the same machine save for the handle, but our velvetiser was only £50 anyway as we bought the subscription

StrychnineIntheSandwiches · 05/02/2022 13:09

I really want one but what I want even more is to do a blind taste test of of hot chocolates made in the various gadgets so I can decide which is the best. Is that too much to ask?

Blanketpolicy · 05/02/2022 13:12

You are not paying all that money for quality or something different, you are paying for clever marketing and a brand. The more they charge the more you think you are getting something special, it must be something better than a milk frother for that price. Other people who have bought it will gush about it because they either got sucked into the marketing or haven't tried a milk frother before, if they did a blind test they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It is just a frother, if you are happy to spend £100 on a frother because the marketing makes it feel like something special, go for it.

tara66 · 05/02/2022 13:17

Lakeland do something similar for GBP49. also some of the supermarkets get similar from time to time.

SisterAgatha · 05/02/2022 13:19

I have tried a milk frother before, we have two at work.

Nespresso makes it too frothy and not hot enough.
Hand held is good but takes fucking ages.

picklemewalnuts · 05/02/2022 13:22

We use a Lidl one. Brilliant and only £20/£25. I use it with milk and options hot chocolate. It's a real luxury treat when you are dieting! A mug full of warm chocolate foam!

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 13:28

You lot are brilliant! Thank you.

So, I've taken on board all your advice and gone with the Dualit which does seem to be the same manufacturer. We already have luxury chocolate and more mugs than we'll ever need. And I had a £10 Amazon voucher for signing up to something so it's brought it down to £40.

Thank you. I shall let you know how we go!

I have a dupe one and my SIL has a real velvet user…there’s no difference. I like my drinks to be slightly hotter than either of them make it, so I put my cup of milk in the microwave for 3 minutes, put in the Hotel Chocolat mix and stir. It’s perfect.

Eightiesfan · 05/02/2022 13:37

@Phormiumjester

Irrationally annoyed with the people telling me to use a pan Grin

Stop talking me out of what I wanted talking out of! Away with your common sense. Smile

Lol, I’ve been hinting about getting one and my DP uses the same unwanted, rational advice to use a saucepan!

He knows I love a kitchen gadget so he knows it’s only a matter of time.

linelgreen · 05/02/2022 13:46

We are now on our third velvetiser as the first two were "kidnapped" and taken away to uni halls with the kids so had to be replaced!!!

Tried the cheaper milk brothers hut nowhere near as good so replaced with the genuine article.

NellePorter · 05/02/2022 13:58

We used to use our Nespresso frother for hot chocolate but the Velvetiser is next level.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 05/02/2022 14:05

We use the Nespresso for hot chocolate.
Do people really have a hot chocolate every day?? That’s a heck of a lot of sugar.

ExtremelyDelighted · 05/02/2022 14:13

We only use it for hot chocolate once or twice a week between 4 of us, it's mainly used for heating/frothing milk for coffee, which is easier, quicker and less messy than doing it in a pan with a handheld frother. But when you do want a hot choc it is second to none.

healthylifestylee · 05/02/2022 14:14

I'm here to talk you into it
It's amazing
