Talk me out of a Velvetiser

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 10:34

My boys both love a hot chocolate.
I DO use gadgets - my soup maker is out at least once a week.
I don't mind wiping it out.
We prefer HC made with milk to water.

But... £100.

Talk me down from this ledge of temptation!

What could you spend that £100 on instead?!

sleepyhoglet · 05/02/2022 15:25

It's the name, velvetiser. Makes it sound so sumptuous

Resilienceismyname · 05/02/2022 15:33

Don’t do it, the hot choc isn’t hot enough for me. More luke warm and the portion size isn’t big.
Buy hot chocolate from the company direct and make your own with warm milk. Look at finding a decent milk frother, my velvetiser spends more time in my cupboard than on the side…

GeneLovesJezebel · 05/02/2022 15:46

If your velvetised drink isn’t hot enough, run it again, and warm the mug with hot water

scandikate · 05/02/2022 15:48

Do it! It's amazing and looks so stylish in your kitchen. My kids (and me and dh) love it

CottonSock · 05/02/2022 16:11

I looked it up when I did a hotel chocolate tasting evening and I still don't understand what it does to cost £100.

TheChosenTwo · 05/02/2022 16:18

Oh god don’t bother! My mum had one, the hot chocolate wasn’t hot (you can get it hotter by putting hot water in first and tipping it out but honestly this is just added palaver no one can be arsed with!) and they make enough for one cup at a time Grin
She opened it to make 4 hot chocolates - by the time the third persons one was ready the first person had finished theirs Grin then she had to wash the bastard thing up!
We honestly laughed so hard at her foolishness for being sucked into the marketing. She gave it to my sister who has used it once and was annoyed she had to wash it up!
I use a saucepan, milk, hotel chocolate (I do use the HC sachets as they’re really nice), heat and whisk until the milk is about to start bubbling and done. Saucepan and whisk go in the dishwasher - job done.
They do look pretty on the side etc but we have nothing out on our sides so it would be bunged in a cupboard. And we do use all sorts of kitchen gadgets but the velvetiser literally has no use to me, I can make hc quickly and with less mess and hotter with what I already have in my cupboards/drawers.
Absolutely no need for one other than to say you’ve got one.

SisterAgatha · 05/02/2022 16:21

I need one just so people who make hot chocolate on the stove so easily can tell me how useless it is and shit in my tea. Wink Loads of people like them and use them. Not everyone is making 28 cups of hot choc either.

jessieminto · 05/02/2022 16:25

I love mine. I use it to make coffee latte more than hot chocolate though and also iced baileys coffee. Espresso martini as well. Hmmm....Grin

Iampicklerick · 05/02/2022 16:28

TheChosenTwo why was your sister annoyed at having to wash it up? You’d have to wash up, even if it was done in a pan. 😂

Kindlethefourth · 05/02/2022 16:32

George at Asda's frother got lots of good reviews as a Velvetiser dupe. £25

SoupDragon · 05/02/2022 16:40

You can put a pan in the dishwasher.
Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2022 16:46

I don't know why people are suggesting using a saucepan. Well I mean you could but it wouldn't be like a drink from the Velvetiser. Confused It would be hot milk in a saucepan...

AlwaysLatte · 05/02/2022 16:57

I bought my boys these hot chocolate shakers as Christmas stocking presents and they use them every day. Hardly take up any space in the cupboard and it's lovely and smooth. Usually microwave the mug of milk first for 90 seconds, tip I to the shaker and mix, then top with squirty cream and marshmallows.

It's a dualit just buy one without the branding for a lot less, or a standard milk frother. Ideally go for one that you can pop the inside part into a dishwasher (if you have one)- the best function imo. I found the velvestiser doesn't get milk very hot, and it's annoying that you can only make one cup at a time.

lucylucyapplejuicy · 05/02/2022 17:30

Love mine! But the hotel chocolat sachets can be expensive so I just crumble a flake into the milk and it works a treat!

TheChosenTwo · 05/02/2022 17:46

@Iampicklerick I guess because my sister is like me and everything goes in the dishwasher including saucepans!!
@SisterAgatha I’m not shitting in YOUR tea, op literally says “talk me out of…” so I’ve just said why it’s not necessary! Calm down, it’s not all about you dear Grin
They’re pretty but not necessary.

PugInTheHouse · 05/02/2022 18:44

I bought one for DS for Xmas, but a cheap version from amazon. It has 2 attachments, one is a proper frother and one just a normal attachment. You can heat or froth or do both.

PugInTheHouse · 05/02/2022 18:47

It is this one. If I was buying it for myself then I would have bought the velvetiser. DS likes Amy old hot chocolate so I felt a cheap version was sufficient Grin

Gimmick.

I got one as a birthday gift. I do not drink coffee and rarely drink tea, so I enjoy a hot chocolate in the winter.

Honestly, it's just a glorified milk frother / stirrer 🤷‍♀️

I'd imagine they are just trading on the "luxury" tag and the fact that people will be using good quality chocolate in it. But that's going to taste just as nice made by hand.

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2022 21:34

I don't think you could make it like that by hand. I've just had a hot chocolate from mine made with Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate so no 'good quality chocolate' here.

I got mine as a Christmas gift and when I opened it I was a bit worried it would be wasted on me but quite the reverse.

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 21:38

I've just made HC in a pan, with a whisk and, yes, it was just hot milk. Not frothy, velvety nor "not a faff". I had to pour it into a jug to pour into a mug because my pans don't have a spout. And then it splashed everywhere. Meh.

I feel entirely justified in my purchase of the Dualit Grin

You can get it on Klarna and pay it over three months. I have one we love it. X
