Talk me out of a Velvetiser

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 10:34

My boys both love a hot chocolate.
I DO use gadgets - my soup maker is out at least once a week.
I don't mind wiping it out.
We prefer HC made with milk to water.

But... £100.

Talk me down from this ledge of temptation!

We love ours - we buy the 5kg chocolate flakes from Pendragon - lovely customer service and lovely chocolate

@Sparklingbrook This was the blurb from the sign up thread. Totally misleading as it doesn't make cold drinks at all:

Here’s what Hotel Chocolat has to say: “The Velvetiser is the ultimate go-to machine for creating barista-grade velvety chocolate drinks. From indulgent hot chocolates, delectable milkshakes to boozy cocktails – create your favourites in just 2.5 minutes. Whatever your lifestyle, the Velvetiser delivers.”

And

Testers will be asked to use the Velvetiser to create hot and cold drinks (using Hotel Chocolat recipes or by creating their own) and then share their thoughts on the process. Following testing the Velvetiser, selected testers will need to give their feedback via a thread on Mumsnet and a short survey.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 10:03

Sounds like you were misled @SoupDragon which is a bit odd. But at least you didn't have to part with £100 to find that out.
At least in the feedback to HC and on the thread you could say that you weren't happy with the temperature of the drink and you would prefer something that makes cold drinks.

Crayfishforyou · 06/02/2022 10:04

I’m not going to talk you out of it.
I got a velvetiser for Christmas and I absolutely love it. It isn’t too hot but I find it more than hot enough.
It’s really easy to clean if you do it straight away.
And yes, you can probably get the same results with a saucepan and a whisk but I am bone bastard idle.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2022 10:04

Even their website has a video titles "the perfect hot and cold chocolate and lattes" and the instructions in the booklet (or maybe online?) do tell you how to make a cold drink by making a hot one and pouring it over ice 😂

Miss2018 · 06/02/2022 10:05

Can’t. I love mine. I usually use galaxy ripples or Cadbury flakes and just crush one before adding. It’s the perfect amount of chocolate and the right consistency.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 10:06

Well if pouring it over ice works then I suppose it's one way of doing it. Bleurgh at a cold Latte though. Sad

I think most people buying one would be wanting a hot chocolate primarily.

SoupDragon · 06/02/2022 10:08

At least in the feedback to HC and on the thread you could say that you weren't happy with the temperature of the drink and you would prefer something that makes cold drinks.

Oh, I did 😂

My children (teen/adult) all like it though.

The Dualit version is cheaper and does much more (hot frothed, just hot and cold frothed)

SoupDragon · 06/02/2022 10:09

What it does it does well (although I microwave my hot chocolate for about 30 seconds whilst I'm awkwardly rinsing the machine under the tap) but I think there are better options.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 10:17

I'm just about to start reading the feedback thread. I didn't have one back then but I do know, so it'll be interesting to see what everyone said. And whether the cold drink (or lack of) thing annoyed everyone.

I was tempted to buy one until my DH said - why don't you just use the Vitamix? It works brilliantly, I just warm up the milk a little in the micro then all in the Vitamix and turn it on. It heats up the milk to the temp we want and it is lovely and frothy.

hotchocdrinker · 06/02/2022 10:44

For those who are saying that the hot chocolate comes out of the velvetiser not hot enough, try heating your mug first. It makes a massive difference.

Thoosa · 06/02/2022 10:46

How many kitchen gadgets are mouldering in the back of your cupboard?

How much of a problem would increased consumption of hot chocolate be?

I think those are the main two deciding questions. Smile

hotchocdrinker · 06/02/2022 10:47

Forgot to say that I drink hot chocolate everyday and used to make it by heating milk in the microwave and using a mini whisk. I didn't see how an expensive piece of machinery could do it any better. Then I was given a velvetiser for Christmas and I'll never look back!! The hot chocolate is just divine! I can't comment on dupes as I've never tried them. I use hotel chocolat hot chocolate and charbonnel and Walker too.

Cookerhood · 06/02/2022 10:52

My Dualit milk frother does cold froth & cost about £30. I mentioned the Aldi frother up thread - I've bought this for DD but it also does hot frother, hot & cold frothed.

Phormiumjester · 06/02/2022 15:29

UPDATE MY DUALIT ARRIVED

And we are in love. Our family is complete! Grin

The hot chocolate made with normal Galaxy powder was absolutely lovely. Velvety. Easy to clean & fast. Great recommendation!

I shall oder some posh stuff for a mid week treat.

Thank you all for your help.

Our family is complete!

😂😂

Phormiumjester · 06/02/2022 16:08

So complete, in fact that I picked up a Sausage Roll maker in Aldi today (reduced to £10) and put it back again.

I LOVE my velvitiser. Use it so much and it looks lovely in copper.

partytime50 · 06/02/2022 17:02

OP is the Dualit a milk frother that you can make hot choc in? Could you possibly share details of the Dualit as my kids want me to get one!

Phormiumjester · 06/02/2022 17:11

That was for @partytime50

I make mine with hazlenut milk and a bit of arrowroot/cornflour stirred in cold to make it thick.
