Talk me out of a Velvetiser

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 10:34

My boys both love a hot chocolate.
I DO use gadgets - my soup maker is out at least once a week.
I don't mind wiping it out.
We prefer HC made with milk to water.

But... £100.

Talk me down from this ledge of temptation!

I love mine. Sorry!

derekthe1adyhamster · 05/02/2022 22:15

I have a:
Aldi dupe velvetiser
Amazon dupe Nespresso milk frother
A velvetiser
A Nespresso milk frother (at work)

The velvetiser is by far the best for hot chocolate. I joined the hotel chocolate club and got £35 off the price

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2022 22:16

Yes @Phormiumjester if it was possible to 'just use a saucepan' to get the same effect there'd be no market for milk frothers, Nespresso machines, Velvetisers or anything else! We could save ourselves a fortune. Grin

I have this and my sister has a Velvetiser and on a taste test neither of us knew the difference! Didnt bother me but it did cause an "I told you so" discussion between Dsis and her DH who had said that it was a total waste of money, he was thrilled to be proved right :o

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 05/02/2022 22:23

We had a milk frother from Amazon that I paid £27 for, I use it to froth my milkshake but managed to get the velvetiser for only £70 before Christmas and got it for DS for his birthday at start of jan... he absolultey loves it. He says the chocolate is more smoother than the other frother. He has ASD so is very particular, he often makes himself one and puts it in a flask and drinks it on the way to school.

Littlepicker · 05/02/2022 22:23

Sometimes mine makes a glorious foam… sometimes it just mixes the hot chocolate and forms a little bit of froth on the top…. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong… or right? But I don’t think they are worth the money

shakinsti · 05/02/2022 22:33

OH got me one for my birthday. I was worried it wouldn't get used much, thought it was just another kitchen gadget, we can easily make hot chocolates with the kettle/ a pan/ microwave.... But actually I've used it loads! I can't comment on how it compares to cheaper versions but my goodness the drinks are beautiful! I've used Aldi hot chocolate flakes in it, instant coffee, flavoured coffee sachets, hot chocolate powder. I prefer it to our dolce gusto machine. If I had to pick a fault, I'd say that the drinks could be ever so slightly hotter.

It'll save the "leave it 5 minutes or you'll scald yourself" convo with the kids!

Buy one of the hand held milk whisks , quick run under tap straight after ...same result, about £5.

Katkinsgreyy · 05/02/2022 23:02

I love my velvetiser.
Don't bother with the expensive hot chocolate sachets. Buy a bar of chocolate and blitz it up in a food processor (it can be kept in the freezer)
Then add 30g or so to the velvetiser.
Also if the hot drinks aren't hot enough. Just pour boiling water in to the cups before hand whilst you're waiting for the velvetiser to finish mixing.

Bitofachinwag · 05/02/2022 23:10

What does it actually do that a saucepan and a whisk can't do? That's worth £100?

I would not be able to recreate it with a saucepan and a whisk. No waiting for the milk to heat in the pan then standing over it or whisking by hand. Pour it in and leave it to do it's stuff. No idea how it does it but it's very good.
SarahBellam · 05/02/2022 23:21

We got one as a gift two years ago and I thought it was just going to be another one of those gadgets gathering dust in a cupboard, but it’s used pretty much every day, mostly by my kids. My DD likes the Hotel Chocolat sachets but my DS loves to make a hot Nesquick in it. It’s quick, easy to use, and easy to clean.

ElfDragon · 05/02/2022 23:29

I have the dualit one.

It’s fantastic. I use it regularly, and it’s so easy. Granted, bunging the milk and chocolate in a saucepan isn’t exactly rocket science, but it is more of a faff than pouring into the jug, tipping in the chocolate, and then press g a button and leaving it to do the job while I get on with emptying the dishwasher. No watching, no continuous stirring, and much easier to wash out afterwards.

I don’t just use the hotel chocolat flakes - any hot chocolate powder works.

ElfDragon · 05/02/2022 23:31

Oh, and re: the temperature - it’s not boiling hot, but it is hot enough. And it’s perfect for children, (I have 3 with SN) as it’s pretty much drinkable straight off.

NalPolishRemover · 05/02/2022 23:47

Wait....can you tell me more about how you use the velvetizer to make iced Bailey's coffee & espresso martini? Please!

We've had ours over a year & have only ever made hot chocolate in it

CorsicaDreaming · 06/02/2022 00:01

@tunnocksreturns2019

I realise my photos aren’t relevant, just pleased with my new barista skills Grin
I'm impressed!

I'm feeling tempted now 😄

Everly18 · 06/02/2022 00:05

Well now I want one! 🤭

Twopenny · 06/02/2022 00:14

I hope one never enters our house. I currently drink zero hot chocolates a year and it's probably for the best that it stays that way.

From the instructions it appears you have to make a hot drink and then cool it down with ice. Ridiculous. Some of the others actually make cold drinks (ie just whisk them with no heat I guess)
Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 09:16

The Velvetiser basically makes hot drinks. If you want cold drinks then something else would be better presumably. I'm not a fan of cold coffee so I've never looked into it.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 06/02/2022 09:16

We use ours daily. It’s absolutely brilliant and looks beautiful so don’t mind it staying out on the counter. MUCH better than pans / handheld whisks / the nespresso version which we had before.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2022 09:18

I've just made a coffee in mine. I really like the two cups you get with it, the same as the ones you get when you go to HC for a hot drink and sit in.

I sent off for the dunking biscuits you get sent for free but I'm not really sure about them. ten seconds is a really long dunk!

SoupDragon · 06/02/2022 09:27

I was a tester for MN and was looking forward to making cold drinks in mine. I was really disappointed to discover it doesn't actually make cold drinks at all (just luke warm "hot" ones)

I've not read all the leaflets that came with it but when I only ever knew of it as a hot drink maker. The online blurb describes it as 'In-home hot chocolate system'. I find the temperature of the hot drinks just right, I don't like them scalding hot.
