Talk me out of a Velvetiser

My boys both love a hot chocolate.
I DO use gadgets - my soup maker is out at least once a week.
I don't mind wiping it out.
We prefer HC made with milk to water.

But... £100.

Talk me down from this ledge of temptation!

Love mine! Such silky smooth hot chocolate, so easy to use and clean too.
If anyone can recommend any other chocolate flake brand i could try though I'd appreciate. I love the hotel chocolat ones but would like to try others too

NalPolishRemover · 05/02/2022 11:20

We have one since 2020 & it's used v regularly. We have the copper one & we leave it out on the kitchen counter so it handy to use whenever any one fancies a hot chocolate.
We really love ours

Aposterhasnoname · 05/02/2022 11:20

I use the milk frother on my coffee machine

NalPolishRemover · 05/02/2022 11:24

Aldi had a pouch of chocolate flakes in their exquisite Christmas range in the turquoise packaging. I bought one to try X we love aldi chocolate but we haven't actually opened it yet
I forgot about it till now!
We have a lovely biscuit barrel from Tiger & I keep all the chocolate sachets in there

OvaHere · 05/02/2022 11:29

I thought the same as you when I made an impulse purchase as a family xmas present.

Everyone loves it and it gets used 2 or 3 times a day.

The HC sachets are expensive so unless you have a money tree you do have to ration those after the introductory bundle.

Grating Aldi chocolate (only tried mint so far) works just as well but is obvs more faffy than pre made sachets. I've seen a small chocolate grater on Amazon I'm going to buy which I think will be easier than the large cheese grater I have.

Standard Hot Chocolate/Horlicks/Nescafe etc... also works fine in it. I've found it nicer to make Horlicks in than my previous microwave method. Slight downside is that anything that isn't the pure chocolate makes it a bit harder to clean after. Not a major issue though.

I have the copper one and it's really nice looking.

ExtremelyDelighted · 05/02/2022 11:32

We love ours, it's so easy to use and clean, makes amazing frothy milk for coffee and silky smooth hot chocolate, it's the copper one and looks gorgeous.

But we have hard water and it shows every water mark from splashes while rinsing (we have hard water) and a cheaper frother would probably do the job for half the price.

PinkSpring · 05/02/2022 11:34

Not worth it at £100. I know a few people who have one and I nearly purchased one, instead I got one for £30 from Aldi, does exactly the same thing.....

Happycow · 05/02/2022 11:34

I think the velvetiser is made by Dualit.. whose own one is half the price, has the same good milk capacity, and takes up a bit less space as the handle is curved

tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/02/2022 11:35

Go on, buy one!

Nomicron · 05/02/2022 11:36

Isn’t it the fact that it’s made with proper chocolate that makes it so nice?

ExtremelyDelighted · 05/02/2022 11:37

We use lots of different brands of hot chocolate, rarely buy HC.

OvaHere · 05/02/2022 11:38

I think it's a fair point that a different make or Dualit's own brand would be just as good. Some of what you would be paying for is the Velvetiser aesthetic and the initial bundle of HC sachets.

BonnesVacances · 05/02/2022 11:38

@Cookerhood

Aldi do a cheap copy. They also do an even cheaper milk frother which does the same thing for £20.
Our aldi one broke after a few uses and we got a refund. The milk frother doesn't heat does it?

We have a Velvetiser. It's fab and we use it every day. We've tried others and this has been the best. You only buy it once.

Sockpile · 05/02/2022 11:40

We have one but it hardly gets used. The kids use the microwave to make hot choc.

Soul11Soul · 05/02/2022 11:41

Can't because I love mine. Everything about it. Feels so indulgent and ceremonial. Love the little cups. Love the froth. Even making an instant coffee with milk in it feels posh.

TheGonnagle · 05/02/2022 11:42

We love ours, sorry. In fact - fuck it, I’m going to go and make a hot chocolate.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/02/2022 11:43

Ours is used every day, my youngest loves frothy milk and I have a hot choc once a week or so

I realise my photos aren’t relevant, just pleased with my new barista skills Grin

UpsilonPi · 05/02/2022 11:44

There's usually a money off deal on somewhere so it won't be £100. Plus you get some hot chocolate and 2 lovely mugs.
We use ours a couple of times a week, it feels like a real treat. If it broke, I might try an alternative cheaper model but I am really happy with ours.

gavisconismyfriend · 05/02/2022 11:44

I love mine. look out for QVC offers

bigbluebus · 05/02/2022 11:46

Just use a whisk and a milk pan - job done!

PlainJaneSuperbrainthe2nd · 05/02/2022 11:46

I love ours - yes you can make it in a saucepan but it's a hassle so I rarely bother. It is so easy to make amazing hot chocolate, so easy to clean, and I LOVE the dark hot choc which isn't too sweet. I got mine for £65 in August I think, so you could try waiting until the weather it warms up...? (That included cups)

RosesAndHellebores · 05/02/2022 11:48

You do know you can just add good quality chocolate grated into a pan for a fraction of the price. Fab, dark, 70%, chocolate with a little sugar added.

TAmumto3 · 05/02/2022 11:48

Just bought DS one for his 16th birthday - can’t remember the last time he was so thrilled a gift! Says the hot chocolate is unbeatable.

Phormiumjester · 05/02/2022 11:49

Irrationally annoyed with the people telling me to use a pan Grin

Stop talking me out of what I wanted talking out of! Away with your common sense. Smile
