One4all giftcards are a nightmare

You can only use them online to pay for something of their value or less.

They're such a PITA - I always end up buying DS's from him and just giving him the £ instead.

I use them in John Lewis. They're a pain though, as you need to tell the store the balance on the card before use. They don't know!!!

Chasingsquirrels · 28/12/2021 08:15

@BeautifulTulips

So you can't use them as part payment if you buy something more expensive?! What a con... DD got bought 2 for Christmas. Can you top up the amount, say you have £10 and the item is £15 can you add £5 on?
You CAN use them as part payment IN STORE, you just have to say how much is on them - so you tell the cashier "take £10 off this card". You can't use as part payment online.

Just swapped mine for JL vouchers. Lost 90p on the older one, the scamming gits, but thank you for showing this was possible!

LuminousFirefly · 28/12/2021 08:19

I agree that those gift cards are terrible. Do you know that they expire? I didn't manage to spend all my balance before it expired and now they get to keep my present money.

BeautifulTulips · 28/12/2021 08:34

@Chasingsquirrels thank you for that - we'll try to spend them today !!

BerthaBlythe · 28/12/2021 08:34

I checked my balance before leaving the house and wrote it in sharpie in the card. When I got up the till it wouldn’t go through. Queue building up behind. Eventually paid with regular debit card. Checked balance again in car afterwards, and discovered they had taken their monthly charge in the meantime.
You literally need to check the balance at the moment you are trying to use the card, which they don’t make easy because you have to input the entire 16 digit code.

Chasingsquirrels · 28/12/2021 08:47

That would have been very annoying for your BerthaBlythe!

AcasterTwins · 28/12/2021 08:52

I work at Boots, whilst we hate it when we see one coming you can use them as part payment (if there's £10 on it we have to tell the till the amount you want to pay off, as though you're using 2 credit cards).

They are a faff though, I think they need to be spent asap, people usually bring them in to buy basics (shampoo, etc) in order to get rid of them, rather than as a treat.

switswoo81 · 28/12/2021 09:33

I love them. Penny's/New look / Tesco all take them so I'd never have a problem using them well before 18 months. Just check the balance online.

Tesco in the UK doesn't though Sad
fuckyourpronouns · 28/12/2021 09:37

We had some this year from our uncle. OH and I don't want anything really but they were easy enough to use in argos for the kids Xmas pressies! You can use them as part payment.. the vouchers go on first and then I paid the difference

CointreauVersial · 28/12/2021 09:46

This thread is a revelation because I didn't realise you could even use them online!
I've only ever used them in store. Perhaps that's why I've not had any issues (apart from needing to know the balance).

labazslovesliving · 28/12/2021 09:53

two questions how long do they last and can you use them online please

Margo34 · 28/12/2021 10:00

They're utter rubbish. I got one as a gift from a job I left from colleagues for £30 and it is just sitting in my wallet going down by 19p every month or whatever the fee is until it gets to zero. Good job I wasn't particularly keen on those colleagues.

Reallybadidea · 28/12/2021 10:11

It seems that some people really, really like them, because there are loads on ebay going for almost their full value Confused

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/12/2021 10:15

We discovered we could use ours at Laithwaites wine merchant.
Lucky children!

switswoo81 · 28/12/2021 10:24

What a dose. I got one recently and I used it for the shopping and then just used the equivalent amount of cash for myself.

switswoo81 · 28/12/2021 10:25

Sorry quote fail.about using it in Tesco

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/12/2021 11:37

You can use them as part payment online at some retailers though, there is a list of these on their website which isn't really that hard to find, I was literally looking at it yesterday before i subsequently spent mine, which took about 30 extra seconds of my time
Granted it isn't all retailers (the part payment option) but it is there and it isn't exactly a hardship to check a balance by typing in a card number to then cash in a free voucher we all presumably got given if we have balance left on a card from under spending. The list of participatint retailers is quite large now overall I can't the issue, it will surely be spent eventually.

I don't know, not particularly intuitive as a process perhaps but hardly great shakes. If we are at the stage that it's a genuine annoyance to have to spend free money gifted to us in certain ways then that seems a little depressing.

Longdistance · 28/12/2021 16:43

Dh has just used it in Argos. He wanted to get rid of the £10.19 left on an old one. Argos were being an arse with it, so he used his other card.
I was gifted mine, so will be specific with asking for gift cards now. Dh got his through work.

pradavilla · 28/12/2021 17:15

I got one as a gift for my birthday and it was a digital online one.

I keep forgetting I have it and I've placed 2 order with boots where I cld have spent it. Damn!

Anyway I actually used some of it today at harvester where we went for bfast. At first the girl had no idea what I was on about but brought the card reader over and we tried it didn't work. Tried again and it went through so least I know I can use it there!

If ppl struggling to use it for more expensive payments cld u top it up to the correct amount? I know I can add value to mine.

Aderyn21 · 28/12/2021 17:20

Got rid of mine now - bought bedding at tkmaxx and the remainder on toiletries at Boots. Only left 2p for them to skim off Grin

SerendipitySunshine · 29/12/2021 08:02

It's like anyone who has ever had to redeem one would never buy one as a gift!

PomegranateSeed · 29/12/2021 09:34

I wanted to use mine at Schuh, but there was a £40 limit on how much you could spend on it there. Luckily I converted the whole thing into an ASOS voucher and bought the same item there. What a faff though.

Missey85 · 29/12/2021 10:50

That s pretty crap! I buy the Visa gift cards to use online as I don't have a debit card
