I can't understand how anyone doesn't like bread sauce.

It's delicious, second best thing on a roast dinner.

What do you enjoy that you can't believe others don't?

Onthedunes · 20/12/2021 23:38

Absolutely adore it.

Has to be home made though, with lashings of fresh cream.

Postdatedpandemic · 20/12/2021 23:39

@ThatsMySantaHisBeardIsSoFluffy they both have food textural issues but still like bread sauce. You seem to think this is not possible.
Maybe we are all allowed to like different things.
And as for the posters calling bread sauce vomit, grow up.

You seem to have misread their comment 🤷🏼‍♀️

@bizboz

For anyone who hasn't tried it, it's basically a bechamel sauce thickened with breadcrumbs instead of flour. You have to infuse the milk well for flavour.
As above. Gorgeous. I use Delia Smith's recipe.

Every single year we have this thread and every single year I am baffled by the vomit comparison. Is it a cat thing? Never had one.

DwangelaForever · 21/12/2021 06:57

What is bread sauce?

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 21/12/2021 07:18

I've been a cat owner since 1998 so I'm very familiar with feline vomit. Bread sauce bears no resemblance to it at all.

As a point of interest, feline vomit tends to look and smell not much different from the cat food that went in. Of all the species vomit I have encountered in my life, if I had to choose only one I'd ever have to clean up in the future, it would hands down be cat sick.

Mochacino · 21/12/2021 07:22

Love bread sauce. Turkey I cannot stand. The smell alone turns my stomach. If anything has touched off it that's all I can taste.

Ducksareruiningmypatio · 21/12/2021 07:32

It's disgusting.
I had an entire dinner ruined by an over zealous friend with a jug of bread sauce once.
I didn't couldn't eat it covered in that gloop

I love bread sauce but as a general rule, I hate people adding my condiments for me. I know exactly where I want them on the plate and how much to add!
gofg · 21/12/2021 08:06

I've never tasted bread sauce (not in the UK), but don't like the sound of it.

Nospringchickendipper · 21/12/2021 10:39

I use Delia recipe as well.

I thought it would be horrible. But it is really nice. A good, homemade recipe (it’s bloody easy to make) is really lovely.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/12/2021 12:12

I've never tasted packet or ready-made bread sauce, as I came to it late and decided to try making it myself to see what we thought. It is indeed very easy, and not expensive, so as my daughter and I love it I continue to make it every year.

As mentioned above, it's really very similar to bechamel sauce, which I also love. Do people who recoil from bread sauce enjoy bechamel or cheese or similar flour-thickened sauces?

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 21/12/2021 12:55

My mum used to use packet sauce and it was OK, but not a patch on home-made.

It's so simple to make that I wonder why anyone bothers with ready-made.

ExquisitelyDecorated · 21/12/2021 13:09

I love cheese sauce but would never, ever eat cauliflower cheese with a roast dinner, the two don't go at all IMO. Bread sauce is tolerable (as long as no cloves have been used) but doesn't add anything to the meal for me.

AnnaMagnani · 21/12/2021 13:10

We never had bread sauce growing up because DM said it was disgusting - I think she'd had the packet stuff.

I asked her one year if we could try it so she made Delia's. It was amazing! After that it was essential every year.

darklady64 · 21/12/2021 14:37

People saying it is just wet bread - seriously do you think we just run a slice of Warbutons under the tap and slap it on? Grin If it's not for you, it's not for you, (good - more for me! And personally I can't stand cranberry) but at least have some sort of understanding about what it actually is!

Bread sauce is the food of the gods. I have to make copious amounts at Christmas (for Xmas dinner and for sandwiches later) as everyone loves it.

I can eat cheese sauces.

I understand exactly what it is, I've seen the recipe for it. It will always be wet bread though unfortunately 🤷🏼‍♀️

EBearhug · 21/12/2021 15:38

It's not just wet bread, though, because it should include the flavour of onion and bayleaf and nutmeg and cloves. You can make it with milk, or cream if you're being indulgent, and you can use a stick blender to whizz it up if you prefer it smoother (but remove any bayleaf and cloves first.)

A dinner I used to do, but haven't for ages, is to sweat diced onion in butter, chuck in a load of milk, some nutmeg, cloves and bayleaf and a chicken breast, leave it to poach for a bit, chuck in bread crumbs, fish out bayleaf and cloves , and there's chicken in bread sauce, ready to serve with some veg.

TomAllenWife · 21/12/2021 15:39

Omg I love it and eat it every week with Sunday dinner.
Or soMetimes just with chips Grin

But it has to be Coleman's packet bread sauce, I don't like the posh stuff

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 21/12/2021 15:40

Nigella's Recipe of the Day today is bread sauce but ya know, even with the fancy food styling it still looks a bit...lumpen. In an already digested kind of way.

I can't understand how anyone doesn't like bread sauce.

I don't know wtf bread sauce is (from Aus) but the name itself doesn't make any sense haha Hmm

If you’ve ever been served corned beef with white sauce (very retro), it’s really similar to that.

It should include all those flavours and definitely cream as well as milk, but one of the key ingredients is butter.

I like the sound of that chicken dish!
