I can't understand how anyone doesn't like bread sauce.

It's delicious, second best thing on a roast dinner.

What do you enjoy that you can't believe others don't?

For anyone who hasn't tried it, it's basically a bechamel sauce thickened with breadcrumbs instead of flour. You have to infuse the milk well for flavour.

@AMerryNickelChristmas

Because it's utterly disgusting
Texture of vomit. I agree with you! 🤢

Cranberry sauce haters - try Ikea lingonberry jam instead, it's amazing!

I’d never had it until about 2 years ago. It is delicious but we still never have it at home. Really should make some but there is no way DH will eat it. Gutted Sainsbury’s don’t have a ready made one available to order online!

pairsinparis · 20/12/2021 17:30

I cook mine with milk that has had an onion infused with cloves in it over night. A few bay leaves too, lots of black pepper. It's lovely. I have it every Sunday and until a convo with a friend recently didn't realise that everyone else didn't, too!

I adore bread sauce, it is glorious.

I didn't like it as a child as my family made it from a packet!

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 20/12/2021 17:32

Because different people like different things. HTH

HopefulProcrastinator · 20/12/2021 17:32

I don't like any milk/cream based sauces so bread sauce would ruin a roast/Christmas dinner for me.

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2021 17:33

I don’t like it either. And honestly can’t see the point of it.

pairsinparis · 20/12/2021 17:33

@WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia
Thanks for clarifying you bloody great bore

Incorrect on the sandwich front. Best sandwich is as follows:

Turkey, sausage/PIB, cranberry, stuffing. Bread sauce if it's your bag. Salad.

Middle layer is toast. Soak said toast in gravy, then add to the sandwich. Repeat fillings and top.

Thank me later.

pairsinparis · 20/12/2021 17:34

@Bluntness100 the point of it is that it adds lovely flavours to your meal Grin

I love bread sauce. Fucking love it.

SpindleWhirling · 20/12/2021 17:36

@SpeckyWithTheGoodHair

But it's wet bread!!!!!!
Yep.

Unfortunately it's wet bread with onion, gluten and milk, and they make me ill. Notably the onion.

So it's a no thank you. Please be nice to people who gently decline it!!

RonniePickering · 20/12/2021 17:36

Wet bread knocks me sick.

pairsinparis · 20/12/2021 17:37

@SpindleWhirling nope I will put an extra large portion on your plate

I'll let you off as it makes you poorly. You're missing out though.

OP posts:
pairsinparis · 20/12/2021 17:38

Hey I tell you what's also great on a roast, but only roast lamb, onion sauce

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 20/12/2021 17:38

What’s bread sauce supposed to taste of? Whenever I’ve had it, it’s tastes of nothing, just gloop.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 20/12/2021 17:39

Bah. It tastes of nothing

SpindleWhirling · 20/12/2021 17:39

Cheers @pairsinparis, I reckon I'm missing out on loads! I'll live vicariously through you and your wet oniony bread love. Grin

pairsinparis · 20/12/2021 17:40

@BalladOfBarryAndFreda it tastes Christmassy to me- cloves, nutmeg, peppercorn, bay leaf, sagey deliciousness

DrCoconut · 20/12/2021 17:41

I'm trying to track down a gluten free shop bought one this year. I love it. I'm guessing it originated with a need to avoid any waste and bulk a meal out.

ExquisitelyDecorated · 20/12/2021 17:42

Bread sauce is ok so long as you only use onion, bay leaf and nutmeg in it. Add cloves and its only fit for the bin.

Going in the bin with it are any veg that have been ruined by the addition of a honey glaze (carrots, parsnips). Also braised red cabbage.

I often see people say they don't like coriander, I think it is divine. Not with Christmas dinner though.

Spitspotsput · 20/12/2021 17:42

I don’t think I would like bread sauce. If anyone tries to destroy my Brussels sprouts by adding things like bacon and whatever yuck I would honestly cry.
