I've been researching my family tree and there are a lot of surnames, mostly usual Irish, Scottish but some interesting ones and it got me thinking about surnames in general.

I always thought Italian surnames are very beautiful, Baccino, Santangelli.

I love ones that are simple such as Flower, Beach and Ocean too.

So, what's the most beautiful one you have ever heard?

I have to give my name at lot at work I nearly changed my name Darling. As in "what's your name ( normally said cross) - Minty Darling- " no your surname". It's Darling, darling

The first name that sprang to mind was Redfern but reading this thread has reminded me that I’ve also known a Peach and a Devine.

I've known a Christmas, several Valentines, and memorably a Kittkatt - loved that name!

I still enjoy referring to US politician Randy Baumgardner at any opportunity.

Ralphiemia · 05/04/2021 00:21

My friends auntie was called Blossom Appleby. I think it sounds very Thomas Hardy, I love it.

EugenesAxe · 05/04/2021 00:31

I was thinking the most elegant I'd ever heard was de'Ath, and then it's the second mentioned!

I quite like normal names with an interesting spelling (like some alternative Anne of GG), and like @Tunaandbobby, like the surname Bankes spelt that way Hmm

Clutterbuck always makes think of Mog and the Baby, but I've seen it on an ad board local to me too.

Damian Grammaticus kind of reminds me of the reporter names on The Day Today, like Suzanna Gekkaloys or Peter O'Hanraha-Hanrahan 😂

Lacazette - like the Arsenal footballer Alexandre Lacazette. Not my team but I love the name.

Just remembered another Arsenal player with the unfortunate name Seaman Confused

I know of people called Bottoms and Puddle. Also think Pollack is unfortunate too!

I've known over the years people with the surnames:
Marriage, Christmas, Crossley, MULVIHILL, Savistanawicz, Wlordawcyz, Moriarty, Tregenna, Toporowski.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 05/04/2021 09:57

Lafayette, although that may have something to do with how it's sang in Hamilton.

WiseOwlOne · 05/04/2021 09:59

@MadamBatty that is one of the surnames which to me looks a bit mad in English! I haven't translated my surname in to Irish but if it were McGillycuddy I'd definitely have to calm it down a notch and go by Ni/ Mac Giolla Chuda

MGillycuddy sounds like a character in a children's book!

ufucoffee · 05/04/2021 12:30

I love the surname Darling. It sounds so lovely after any first name. I also like D'arbanville.

woodhill · 05/04/2021 12:32

Cat Stevens song in my head now about a Lady😀

DS had a physics teacher called Mr Power! Grin

There was also a younger boy in the school called Gruff Justice! Always made me picture a muscle bound superhero, an awful lot for a skinny 7 year old to live up to, bless him. Smile
