Because I had to write it down today but I was too embarrassed to ask him to clarify the spelling 🙈.

@Butwasitherdriveway

He's not Irish, is he?
Why do you ask?
DanielODonkey · 31/03/2021 18:28

No, Rowan and Ryan don't sound the same to me at all. But! I wondered if it was an accent thing and maybe a different accent (estuary english? Brummie?) Might make Ryan sound like Royan which isn't too far from Rowan?

DanielODonkey · 31/03/2021 18:30

I was trying to reply to @Lockdownbear!

Not only can I not say R but I can't do quotes or weplies.

HeronLanyon · 31/03/2021 18:33

Rywnn. ??

BluTangClan · 31/03/2021 18:36

There was a contestant on Pointless the other week called Webekah. Every time Alexander Armstrong said her name it sounded the he had a speech impediment.

YouKnowItsTrue · 31/03/2021 18:54

Maybe he doesn’t like the name Rowan and changed the pronunciation to something he likes. A bit like Mrs Bucket or Mr Bastard. Confused

lockdownalli · 31/03/2021 18:54

Let this thread be a lesson to those of you who want to give your poor babies yooneek names/spellings.

Just do not do it!!!

YouKnowItsTrue · 31/03/2021 18:57

used to go to school with a girl names Francis. Where I am from, we pronounce it Fran (to rhyme with pan)-cis but her mother INSISTED it was pronounced Frarn (to rhyme with barn)-cis even though in our (very working class, midlands) accents sounded absolutely ridiculous.

Same here. Also a midlander. I knew a Tanya who insisted on being Tarnya and you’re right it doesn’t work at all with the accent!

RebeccaCloud9 · 31/03/2021 19:02

I know someone who was Ryan and is now Rowanne.

lockdownalli · 31/03/2021 19:02

I am SE and say Frahnsiss and Tahnyah

No R in either though......

CherryValanc · 31/03/2021 19:47

@Butwasitherdriveway

He's not Irish, is he?
What are you getting at?

In Ireland, Ryan is pronounced Ryan and Rowan is pronounced Rowan, both names not being exactly unusual here.

Rowan isn't spelt Ryan here. If it's a variant of the spelling because it's the Irish equivalent and they'd sound quite similar to the English equivalent.

Lucent · 31/03/2021 19:50

@CookieClub

Or, are you sure the person talking to you didn't have an irish twang...and they said "Rowan with a W" as opposed to Roan or Rohan??
I'd be fascinated to hear the 'Irish twang' that turns Rowan into Ryan.
JaneJeffer · 31/03/2021 20:25

Do people realise Ryan is an Irish name? Fucks sake.

eggandonion · 31/03/2021 20:40

A strong Ulster accent could sort of turn Ryan into Rowan. Like when my dd was convinced a child she met in Belfast was called Urn, but she was really called Erin.

Butwasitherdriveway · 31/03/2021 20:42

@Lucent as someone with many Irish friends I would say I can see this

Butwasitherdriveway · 31/03/2021 20:43

@BluTangClan

Webekah Sad
NoLactose · 31/03/2021 20:45

Ryan Wsurname?

GiftedFish · 31/03/2021 21:20

Wryan surely!?
I have a friend called Marc. When he introduced himself he said "Mark with a C" so now I just call him Cark. Bit of a running joke.
So I would called this person Wyan.

expatinspain · 31/03/2021 21:38

Wryan

Astressie · 31/03/2021 22:01

OP you said up post "the person recommended ‘Ryan with a W’ surname". Did the person you spoke to mean that the first name was Ryan and their surname began with a W but they couldn't remember it?

VenusTiger · 31/03/2021 22:14

Good god OP! Why didn't he just say, 'his name is Rowan, but just to let you know, he pronounces it Ryan'
Because 'Ryan with a W' is not Ryan and it's not Rowan either.
What an idiot 😆

VenusTiger · 31/03/2021 22:16

@eggandonion my NI DH pronounces Ryan and Rowan completely differently - 'i' in Ryan and 'o' in Rowan.

eggandonion · 31/03/2021 22:45

I'm trying to trick mine into saying Ryan and Rowan. He needs to say it without thinking for the experiment to work!

Anele22 · 31/03/2021 23:09

Rwan??

Anele22 · 31/03/2021 23:11

Am screaming with laughter here!
