If someone told you their name was Ryan but Ryan spelt with a W how would it be spelt?

Because I had to write it down today but I was too embarrassed to ask him to clarify the spelling 🙈.

Does anybody else remember the old Two Ronnies sketch centred around misunderstanding posh pronunciations of words? From memory, Ronnie B mentioned that he needed to get some 'tiles' for his bathroom, then Ronnie C asked about grout or something and then RB replied "No, not tiles - TOWELS (still pronounced as 'tiles'), you know: for drying yourself after your shiiire!"

At a real push, I can just about see how Ryan/Rowan could possibly be confused - as long as said tradesman is frightfully posh and has devoted his whole life to featuring in/paying tribute to a comedy sketch that was written probably before he was even born....

I bet Rylan would get this all the time, if he weren't famous.

"Yes, it's like Ryan, but with an 'l'. NO, not LION!!!!"

Bernardo1 · 31/03/2021 23:43

Rywan ?

MissCaptain · 01/04/2021 00:35

Wasn’t the recommendation for “Ryan with a W surname” ? So Ryan Williams, Ryan Walker ...... ?

Lockdownbear · 01/04/2021 00:55

@DanielODonkey

I was trying to reply to *@Lockdownbear*!

Not only can I not say R but I can't do quotes or weplies.

Hahaha! This thread has been so funny.

Quotes on the bottom right of a post is 3 wee dots, touch them and it gives the option to Quote ( it also give the option to report to MNHQ)

Wateruniform · 01/04/2021 01:45

When he comes back with the quote, you should just give him a ry smile.

garlicbread82 · 01/04/2021 03:39

Eoghan

Lantanacamara · 01/04/2021 06:51

I once worked with someone who always introduced himself as "Ryan with an h". He spelled it Rhyan.

NinthCircle · 01/04/2021 08:53
@Lucent as someone with many Irish friends I would say I can see this
As someone who is Irish, I assure you I can't.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 01/04/2021 08:56

@garlicbread82

Eoghan
Eoghan is not Ryan.
Rukaya · 01/04/2021 09:02

Eoghan

What has that name got to do with anything? It's nothing at all like Ryan and doesn't have a W. Irish doesn't even use a W!

eggandonion · 01/04/2021 09:15

I suppose you would say Eoghan with a gh to differentiate from Eoin. Or to complicate things, Owen with a w.

TheOrigRights · 01/04/2021 09:15

@JaneJeffer

Do people realise Ryan is an Irish name? Fucks sake.
I think they do. What's your point?
jobbyjg · 01/04/2021 09:19

My ds is Ryan and when he was born. The midwife asked how I was spelling it? I only ever thought there would be one spelling found it an odd question

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 01/04/2021 09:20

@eggandonion

I suppose you would say Eoghan with a gh to differentiate from Eoin. Or to complicate things, Owen with a w.
Would you get Wogan then? W-eogh-an. Still not Ryan though Grin
NinthCircle · 01/04/2021 09:22

@TheOrigRights, well, among other things that it would therefore be fairly unlikely that an Irish person would mispronounce it to the extent of causing the confusion manifested on this thread?

TheOrigRights · 01/04/2021 09:25

I don't know any non-Irish people who mispronounce Ryan or Rowan.

eggandonion · 01/04/2021 09:26

I used to work with Suzanne, whose dad called her Susan.

Sheila786 · 01/04/2021 09:49

I would think they need help........ I remember a lady in her 60's whose name was Carole and she changed it to Carroll........... erm why..... nothing as queer as folk.......

NinthCircle · 01/04/2021 10:26

Nor do I, @TheOrigRights, but there have been posts on this thread suggesting that ‘an Irish twang’ might confuse Ryan with Rowan.

Lockdownbear · 01/04/2021 10:33

@eggandonion

I used to work with Suzanne, whose dad called her Susan.
I can just about understand that. To me they sound like a faster and slower version of the same name.

But Ryan and Rowan are totally different it's like saying toy and tow are the same.

eggandonion · 01/04/2021 10:33

I don't think it's mispronouncing, more accents. For example, King Enery, wiv a H.
Or Shawn the Sheep, pronounced Shorn, doesn't work in an Irish accent.

Rukaya · 01/04/2021 11:07

Or Shawn the Sheep, pronounced Shorn, doesn't work in an Irish accent

Yes it does.

1Mollysmum1 · 01/04/2021 11:09

🤣🤣🤣

PuzzleMonkeyMum · 01/04/2021 12:11

I’m laughing my head off at all these replies. We’re in Staffordshire and he genuinely didn’t have any strong accent. Maybe I should just wait for Ryan with a W to be available for a quote and see what he introduces himself as?
