Because I had to write it down today but I was too embarrassed to ask him to clarify the spelling 🙈.

Glad you got to the bottom of it, although it must be infuriating that it was for nothing anyway. And Just no to Rowan being Ryan Grin

Tomcullenisahero · 31/03/2021 15:42

@CovidCorvid

Was also wondering if there’s an accent involved.

I used to know a Kiwi called Dibby. Turned out her name was actually Debbie. 😂.

Love it😂😂😂

My first thought was that it's a Rowan which it is and it was just a case of mishearing whihc it is. I'm pleased that I've got the commone sense to have worked that out straight away anyway.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/03/2021 16:43

Did they say “double u” or “wuh”?

I was hoping it would be Uryanu – named after a pub toilet in Essex!

he’ll give you a good price

Well, it's not like he can be too choosy with demand from hundreds of potential customers if nobody can ever find him! Think of the discount as including a search fee Grin

Surely you'd just say 'Ryan - but spelled like Rowan', or 'Spelled as Rowan, but he pronounces it as Ryan', wouldn't you?! What on earth would possess parents to choose an entirely different name expecting everybody to know to mangle it into the name they want - instead of just using the name they wanted in the first place?!

"My name is Jessica, but with an 'N'.... yes, that's it: spelled J-E-N-N-I-F-E-R...."

Oscarsdaddy · 31/03/2021 17:25

Awesome Mumsnet is now racist against the Welsh.

1Mollysmum1 · 31/03/2021 17:39

Do you not think he actually means Ryan, with a W surname...in other words his name would be Ryan and his surname starts with a W? 🤷‍♀️

Dnaltocs · 31/03/2021 17:44

So important to keep this in mind when choosing children’s names. This poor fellow having to explain his name for ever🙁
Some choose the oddest of names thinking their children will be unique, instead they are considered odd. Not something a good, caring-parent wants for their child.

Idontknowhowtodothis · 31/03/2021 17:46

My ex was (still is) called Ryan. I spelled it with a W. And an A. And And N. And a K........ 😂🙊

He's not Irish, is he?

WildCherryBlossom · 31/03/2021 17:48

I went to school with someone called Wayann. That might not be how it was spelt but it definitely wasn't Wayne or Ryan. I think his mum was Brazilian and dad American and the name might have been made up (possibly not helpful)

Rukaya · 31/03/2021 17:51

But if you Google Wryan, there are loads of examples. It’s a first name and a surname

A few people have used it as a first name, but come on.....

skeggycaggy · 31/03/2021 17:52

How does Rowan pronounce it?!

Rukaya · 31/03/2021 17:54

So in conclusion Ryan with a W is actually spelled Rowan but pronounced Ryan

But it isn't. That's like Sarah, pronounced Bob.

CookieClub · 31/03/2021 18:04

Maybe rather than driveways, look up Wyan landscaping? Or Wryan Landscaping/varients of this??

CookieClub · 31/03/2021 18:06

Or, are you sure the person talking to you didn't have an irish twang...and they said "Rowan with a W" as opposed to Roan or Rohan??

Streamingbannersofdawn · 31/03/2021 18:11

I listen to a speaker online who calls his son Gram. Took me ages to work out its actually Graham!

Lost in the accent.

@PuzzleMonkeyMum

Update

So I have an answer (of sorts!!) A man in my class (let’s call him Bill) mentioned on the course group chat this morning he had an appointment with the same advisor today so I asked him to ask him for me.

Anyway the name is Rowan!!! BUT he pronounces it Ryan?!?!? Bill told him that he’d spoken to me and I couldn’t find the recommendation on Facebook and that I thought it was misspelling it so he spelled it out. And Bill said ah so Rowan? And he said no it’s pronounced Ryan Confused.

Does Bill spell his name with an N.

So Ben?

BeenNeverSeen · 31/03/2021 18:19

I read the OP as ‘Ryan with a W surname’ meaning his name was Ryan W... but they couldn’t remember his surname?

TrixieMixie · 31/03/2021 18:19

The W is silent. It is spelled Ryan.

BeenNeverSeen · 31/03/2021 18:22
