Because I had to write it down today but I was too embarrassed to ask him to clarify the spelling 🙈.

So in conclusion Ryan with a W is actually spelled Rowan but pronounced Ryan 😂

Congratulations to whoever said that 😂
Butwasitherdriveway · 31/03/2021 13:39

I'm gutted it's not Ryuun

ILoveShula · 31/03/2021 13:42

Oh, I get it, it's Rowan but pronounced Row as in argument, not Row as in boat.

DustCentral · 31/03/2021 13:44

I’m fairly sure that advisor has been mispronouncing Rowan’s name for years and Rowan’s now too embarrassed to tell him GrinGrin

Tomcullenisahero · 31/03/2021 13:45

How fecking annoying. That's like saying 'Hi my name's Sara with a N, I spell it Sandra'.

TheOrigRights · 31/03/2021 14:00

You'd think after a lifetime of having to explain he would have known he would need to spell it out for you.

No one in a million years would get Rowan from "Ryan with a W".

I shall keep the rest of my thoughts to myself.

eggandonion · 31/03/2021 14:03

Does supervisor have an accent? More specifically a Northern Ireland accent? My dh and my neighbour have strong Northern Ireland accents, my neighbour is called Liam pronounced Lame.

Lockdownbear · 31/03/2021 14:09

What was his mother thinking?
I'd never have got that.
This needs to be linked to every baby name post where the parents are thinking of an unusual spelling.

RonSwansonsChair · 31/03/2021 14:12

Glad you got to the bottom of it OP, and thanks for coming back with an update. I really was wracking my brains trying to come up with how you spell Ryan with a W Grin

Soubriquet · 31/03/2021 14:13

What a stupid name....

It’s like saying “hi my names Amy but it’s spelled Annie” Confused

LudoBear · 31/03/2021 14:16

What the hell!

There was Marcia on TV last night. Probounced Mar-say.

That's not Ryan though is it?
ILoveShula · 31/03/2021 14:19

No

eggandonion · 31/03/2021 14:50

My daughter had a lecturer called Deborah, pronounced De Bore Ah.

Lockdownbear · 31/03/2021 14:54

Is Deborah not more Deb-o-rah although a lot of people miss the o and end up with Deb-ra

CovidCorvid · 31/03/2021 14:54

Was also wondering if there’s an accent involved.

I used to know a Kiwi called Dibby. Turned out her name was actually Debbie. 😂.

KirstenBlest · 31/03/2021 14:57

@eggandonion, when I was little I was introduced to a girl called Debbie. I mentioned to my mum that i was a pretty name, and she said it was short for Deborah (to rhyme with Norah)

From what I understand, the name is Devorah or something in Hebrew, and the stress is on the middle syllable.

The biblical Deborah was like my mum said it - we're Welsh speakers, and the stress is always on the penultimate syllable.

Kljnmw3459 · 31/03/2021 14:58

What?! 😯
RonSwansonsChair · 31/03/2021 15:11

Off topic, but when I was child I thought the name Deborah was so exotic and beautiful. After reading it mentioned so many times here and saying it in my head over & over - it's now lost all meaning and sounds weird 😆

KirstenBlest · 31/03/2021 15:14

I know a NZer called Bin

DanielODonkey · 31/03/2021 15:18

Rowan (row as in argument) is a lovely Scottish name for men. I would have called my son that but I can't say R so he would have been Wowan.

Would you say Rowan sounds the same as Ryan?

To me a fellow Scot they sound totally different.

PuzzleMonkeyMum · 31/03/2021 15:24

I know, it makes absolutely no sense at all. But people are weird when it comes to names, I used to go to school with a girl names Francis. Where I am from, we pronounce it Fran (to rhyme with pan)-cis but her mother INSISTED it was pronounced Frarn (to rhyme with barn)-cis even though in our (very working class, midlands) accents sounded absolutely ridiculous.

He didn't have any strong accent, like Welsh or Scottish. Pretty much the same accent as me.

And I have messaged Rowan/Ryan with a W to ask about a quote and he can't fit me in till the end of May anyway!
