What did you like until it 'got a bit rubbish?'

I loved watching Sherlock but then the last few series I found beyond awful and ridiculous! Gone was (imo) the clever writing and semi-believable show.

Also found shopaholic series got overly rubbish towards the end. Same with the I heart book series. Saying that, I know they're not award-winning literature to start with.

Forget changing your likes and dislikes. What series of books/films/tv shows/music did you like until.. it changed?

Agree with previous posters on
Greenday - it did all go downhill after American idiot.
Suits - I watched to about season 7 I think but if I’m honest I got bored sooner. It was so good before!
The Simpsons - the writing used to be so clever, there are some great YouTube video about its demise.

Outlander was pretty trashy from the start, but it was enjoyable trash. I think it fell over after Culloden, where it's fairly obvious Murtagh is meant to die (and does in the books, I think? Never read them). And he doesn't because people liked the character. Also, the daughter is so fucking annoying.

Jean Auel's 'Clan of the Cave Bear' books. First one is great, such an interesting idea, lots of detail. Second one is a bit weird. Then last one is utterly dire, full of 'songs' and just embarrassing.

I was a bit disappointed with Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway books too. I think one of the more recent ones was meant to have picked up a bit, so maybe I need to give them another go.

Any series where the reality becomes too far fetched.

Killing Eve (just got too ‘quirky’)

Silent Witness (just how involved do pathologists get in murder investigations..)

Sherlock (loved the first 2 episodes, went right up its own arse after that)

Doctor who (loved it as an 80s child when it was a bit tongue-in-cheek sci-fi) now it’s complete shite. Awful actors, trying too hard to be ‘current’)

Ilovetolurk · 23/06/2020 19:50

Agatha Raisin books; while I’m sort of sad there’ll be no more as the author passed away they were getting ridiculous

Yes. Almost like the author had no proofreader at all for the later books. One blooper had Agatha very markedly insisting that she never used a satnav. Only to use her satnav two chapters later. Still hoping that she can get together with Charles in this last book though

It’s July 3rd! You’re welcome 😉

Eek is. It thank you very muchy @strawberrypancakes Smile

EasyLifer · 23/06/2020 19:53

We watch a lot of Sky dramas but some of them just seem to round and round in circles of the same plot, but never any conclusion. Particularly Blacklist, Blindspot, and Ray Donovan.

ShowOfHands · 23/06/2020 19:58

Agree with Dr Who and Sherlock in particular. Big Bang Theory, they all ended up mean.

Supernatural peaked at season 4 with the introduction of Castiel and an interesting look at heaven and the angels but it went on 800 series too long and I don't give a shit about heaven anymore. I still want to watch the last series though.

Festivals in general. I'm an avid festival goer but nowadays they're full of Rent-a-Crowds in their obligatory denim cut offs, wellies and a straw hat, picnic sponsored by Waitrose, posing for selfies and moaning if you dance in front of their picnic blanket.

Scoobygang7 · 23/06/2020 20:05

@dancinfeet I adored Hotel. Roanoke I wanted to stop watching but continued incase it improved. Cult wasn't amazing. I enjoyed apocalypse but only watched one ep of the new one and haven't watched any further.

Wineinthegarden · 23/06/2020 20:09

Death in Paradise. I know it followed the same format all the time and that’s what made it easy watching, but it just got a bit tedious somehow.

LadyEv · 23/06/2020 20:24

Heroes. The first season was really, really good. Then it took a vertical nose dive. I think it was a case of the writers not agreeing in what directionthe show should go.

Supernatural. The first 5 seasons were great. But when it came back for season 6 it was almost like a different show. It did start to get good again around season 8.

Sex

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 23/06/2020 20:33

I absolutely love Friends, I watch it ALOT! But, what irritates me is how dumb they made Joey as the series went on. I also didn't really like Ross in series 1-2/3, but as it went on, he became my favourite character.

UnagiSalmonSkinRoll · 23/06/2020 20:36

I also think when Debra fell in love with Dexter, that was when the show hit rock bottom

Cardboard33 · 23/06/2020 20:44

Just read back through the thread and YES to Gossip Girl. It got completely implausible although we still watched it to the end. This is quite shameful but we genuinely still do the "xoxo" thing when we see people hooking up/doing something naughty on TV though, it's become an in joke of our marriage.

Glad people agree with Handmaids Tale and Orange is the New Black. I think I dislike things that were a book, they make it into a TV series, it gets traction and they think wow, how can we make this drag on as long as possible aka the Handmaid's Tale...

Awwww that's great GrinGrinGrin

UnitedRoad · 23/06/2020 21:00

Going back a bit but I LOVED The Bill. I looked forward to every episode, but then something went very wrong. They killed off lots of the best characters, and the new ones were too ‘ex hollyoaks’. I didn’t even watch the last few series’s.

Janaih · 23/06/2020 21:09

Glad to read so many comments about got. Most of my friends and dh wont hear a word against it!

I will add orange is the new black. Loved first series, lost interest halfway through second one.

Janaih · 23/06/2020 21:11

Oh, I see oitnb has been mentioned!

goose1964 · 23/06/2020 21:18

Heroes, it got silly in the last seies, with all the save the cheerleader crap

Liverpool52 · 23/06/2020 21:31

Definitely Patricia Cornwall novels. And the Jack Reacher series. I just never got how so many women could be attracted to a guy who apparently owns one set of clothes and hardly ever showers. Also how much bad luck can one guy have.

House of Cards the final season. Gave up.

Strike Back season 2 onwards. It suddenly turned into soft porn. I genuinely thought my husband had put the wrong disk in and asked him to check.

Our Girl. Liked the first season and Lacey Turner should have stayed. But Michelle Keegan is hideous in it although to be fair she's not assisted by the terrible script and totally unrealistic story lines.

PatchworkElmer · 23/06/2020 21:45

Friends, definitely.
Silent Witness is increasingly ridiculous, but I continue to watch against my better judgement.

Flymetothetoon · 23/06/2020 21:45

Mad Men me and DH loved that show until the final season and couldn't watch anymore.
Ditto Ally McBeal and Moonlighting

forevercurious · 23/06/2020 21:52

Haven’t RTFT but pretty little liars should have ended after the dolls house, season 5 I think. The actual ending was shocking and I’ve loved every episode until season 6 started but felt I had to continue with it as I was invested.

KenAdams · 23/06/2020 21:58

Not just Shopaholic but Sophie Kinsella on general. I had to force myself to finish Surprise Me. Anything she wrote after the one where Bex had a baby is dire. And her spending money when they're millionaires is just a weird story. The final nail in the coffin for me was the two parter Shopaholic so she could sell more books. It wasn't even a story that needed dragging out.
