What did you like until it 'got a bit rubbish?'

I loved watching Sherlock but then the last few series I found beyond awful and ridiculous! Gone was (imo) the clever writing and semi-believable show.

Also found shopaholic series got overly rubbish towards the end. Same with the I heart book series. Saying that, I know they're not award-winning literature to start with.

Forget changing your likes and dislikes. What series of books/films/tv shows/music did you like until.. it changed?

Supernatural. I pretend it ended after about season 6 or 7
Same. It just got ridiculous.

Also agree on Dexter and Westworld (the clever mixing of timelines in season 1 became an annoyance by 3). The ending of season 1 Dexter was amazing. Did exactly what it needed to. By the end of the last season it had literally lost the plot.

Sometimes they have a brilliant initial idea that makes a great couple of series but is so popular they decide to drag it on and on destroying the original great idea.

Big bang was ruined once they started settling down.

Stargate SG1. Gave up once it turned into Farscape SG1.

whatshebininagain · 23/06/2020 13:20

X-files, Once it stopped investigating weird stuff and just focussed on the big conspiracy stuff.

SneakyBlinder · 23/06/2020 13:21

My Exh......

Oh and Benidorm. Loved the first few series then it got crap, especially with Tiger and his mate Hmm

Can I add Parks and Rec It was so fresh and funny the first few seasons, dipped a bit, then stabilised. But the last season was so bad that it ruined the feel of the whole show for me. I now pretend that it stops at the point where Leslie is head of National Parks, and she and Ben get into the lift.
"Are you ready?"
"No. But when have we ever been?".
Lift doors close.

Oh and totally agree with this. It’s one of my favourite series ever, I discovered it when I lived in the states and S2 was being aired, I just watched it from there and then when I had to move back to uk I was devastated it wasn’t on uk channels or uk version of Netflix. So happy when they started showing it here. I’ve still never watched the first series and everyone says it’s awful so I won’t bother, and the last one was dire. I just pretend the first and last series don’t exist and continue to enjoy the others.

I’m still enjoying Killing Eve (got 2 of the last series to go) but then I never thought it was as amazing as everyone made out in the beginning - like I enjoyed it fine and would watch the odd episode if I got the tv to myself but I wasn’t hugely invested so haven’t felt any disappointment in the apparent drop in quality - it seems the same to me?

Can't believe no-one has mentioned outlander yet. I read the books ages ago and waiter avidly for the new ones to be released. The first 2 books were amazing, 3rd and 4th we're ok, but strated to get repetitive, 5th book jumped the shark and the rest were so boring.

Sadly I feel the same about the series. Haven't even finished watching the latest one.

BabyLlamaZen · 23/06/2020 13:38

Forgot Friends! Ok so I still love it let's ignore the parts that have dated terribly e.g. most Ross meltdowns but series 10... ugh! Watched because I loved them all and needed to know what happened. A lot of it was rubbish though.

I can't recall what point it started going a bit downhill, maybe series 7 or 8? I still like a lot of the storylines but Monica turned into this horrible screechy caricature who did nothing but clean and be a bit of a bitch. Chandler got all red and...boring? Phoebe got a bit blah. Loved her and Mike though.

The Big Bang Theory

Killing Eve

Patricia Cornwell’s books

NeutralJanet · 23/06/2020 14:02

Ashes to Ashes was nowhere near as good as Life on Mars and should have ended after one series

Definitely agree with this, most people seem to think that Ashes to Ashes was better but I just didn't think it had the charm of Life on Mars and I didn't really like the Alex character they brought in to replace Sam.

I also agree with Outlander, once it got past the second series it all got a bit repetitive and I couldn't be arsed with it anymore.

ThreeCubesBalancing · 23/06/2020 14:11

I agree totally with Sherlock, such a shame. Also, agree with Once Upon a Time and Luther, and Patricia Cornwell. The XFiles was one of my favourite shows ever, but once Mulder left I couldn’t get into it (I know he came back) and I couldn’t get into the new series either.
I don’t agree with Twin Peaks, I actually started watching with the episode where we find out who killed Laura Palmer and carried on from there, only saw most of the first series later, so I actually really like the last series!
Mixed feelings about Killing Eve, I still enjoy it but in a different way, as a slapstick comedy not as a show where I care about the characters.

I agree with this. Loved the books but the show is lacking something for me.

Supernatural changed once the angels became a major plot point. I don't think it got worse (there are some episodes that I absolutely love in later seasons) but the whole vibe changed.

Cruddles · 23/06/2020 14:38

Beer: some good beers ruined when bought out by the big breweries. Doom Bar was an alright drop ten years ago, now it's awful. The same happened for Neck Oil more recently.

TV wise, the Simpsons. Series 1-10 = brilliant. Series 11-15 = hit and miss. Series 16+ awful, don't bother

squeekyclean · 23/06/2020 14:38

Big Bang Theory and Friday Night Dinner- I really wish they had ended them both at least 1 series before. Watching the latest, unfunny, series has ruined all of them for me.

Not Going Out- I loved the early series but then the housemates got together and everything became really far fetched and unfunny. The most recent series where they are a middle aged couple with kids makes me cringe.

I think sitcom writers should have realised now that shows about young singles will always die a death if the characters all couple up and live happily ever after!

chocolicious · 23/06/2020 14:44

Killing Eve.
If there's is a 4th series in the future I don't think I'll be watching it.

Ahundredpercentthatbitch · 23/06/2020 14:51

Totally agree with Luther and Patricia Cornwell.

The sex scene between Alice and Luther was so disappointing. Just a bog standard shag on the sofa type thing. I wanted it to be... more exciting?

And Patricia Cornwell might as well just write a book called: "I'm So Amazing and Clever and Everyone Who Isn't In Love With Me Wants To Kill Me, Because They Can't Handle How Amazing and Clever I Am."

Don't think it's been mentioned yet but I would like to add Sons of Anarchy to the list. It really jumped the shark around the time that that baby was kidnapped by the IRA and they all had to go to Belfast.

Pepperwand · 23/06/2020 15:08

The initial ones that spring to mind have already been mentioned.

Killing Eve - 1st series was excellent, just about put up with series 2 but series 3 was rubbish.

The Walking Dead - how many episodes of essentially the same storyline can you possibly make? Too many, clearly. Around series 7 I gave up, part of me felt I should keep watching as I'd already committed to so many episodes but life is too short.

Silent Witness - used to love it but got more and more ridiculous, can't take it seriously anymore.

Haribo tangfastics - god I loved them but my tastebuds have obviously grown up.

Clubbing - couldn't imagine anything worse.... again, I've become old in my early 30s Grin

morethanafortnight · 23/06/2020 15:12

New Tricks. The original cast members were outstanding and completely gelled. Ain't the same with Nicholas Lyndhurst et al.

dontjustdont · 23/06/2020 15:14

Perfectly put Grin

It all got weird and slightly "woo" and it seemed that readers were supposed to be mind readers because a lot of the plot/narrative stayed in her head and never made it on to the page.

I had forgotten how disappointing this was - and now I am disappointed and pissed off all over again!

Guineverez · 23/06/2020 15:25

I'm still angry about Dexter Grin the first 4 seasons were great, and then it got steadily worse. The last season was especially bad. It kind of ruined the whole series.

The Simpsons, early seasons perfect. I haven't watching new ones in years. Homer went from dumb with a heart to just stupid and cruel.

Maybe just me but Grace and Frankie. Loved the first 2 but then kind of went off it. I need to give it another chance.

DopamineHits · 23/06/2020 16:02

Sherlock and Game of Thrones are the main two for me TV wise. I've never seen such a rapid deterioration in quality. I will rewatch GOT till the end of the 3rd season and Sherlock until the end of the 2nd.

At least in GOT's case it was because they'd run out of source material when I think they'd probably assumed the last book would come out during the shows run.

With Sherlock though it felt like the Mofatt and Gatiss got a bit giddy and silly from all the praise and inflated budget. The last series was just daft. And all that carry-on about how viewers should let Moriarty go, when they couldn't let him go!

And as it was a thread yesterday Virginia Andrews and the Flowers in the Attic books. The first one was creepy/gross but entertaining enough for me to buy the next. From there though it just seemed to be about how much misery she could pile on to her lead female character for the sake of it. And the books were shockingly poorly written. She blew her load with the first one. She should have left it there.

IntermittentParps · 23/06/2020 16:14

Totally. Boys with their special-effects and helicopter toys. And their clever-clever scripts that aren't actually clever at all.

happinessischocolate · 23/06/2020 16:18

A league of their own

I used to enjoy it when if first started but James' ego got way to big and Jack Whitehall just fucked it up completely, if only James, Freddie and Jack were half as funny as they thought they were 🙄

DopamineHits · 23/06/2020 17:00

Jilly cooper, and Elizabeth Jane Howard - loved the Rutshire chronicles and the Cazalet series, and then both authors returned to them decades later, and it was like they decided they hated their old characters and needed to punish them.

Yes, Helen Fielding too. How can you have Bridget without Mark?

DopamineHits · 23/06/2020 17:11

I agree about chocolate. I rarely bother with a bar of chocolate now because they either taste greasy or acidic.

I also agree with;

Once Upon A Time. The show has a chaotic quality, almost like it's being improvised scene to scene. I persevered for a long while (felt like eons) because there were little diamonds among the dross, like Rumple taking Cruella and Ursula through a drive through, but it got too tedious watching the characters going round in circles.

Frasier. I liked the Niles and Daphne love story at first, but for me the show nosedived with the way they tried to conceal Jane Leeve's pregnancy. The scene where three grown men can't pick her up off the floor embarrassed me to watch. I also hated the way the male characters consistently slutshamed Ros while congratulating themselves on their endless conquests.

Gossip Girl. The big reveal made no sense. I won't give it away in case someone is yet to watch it, but it was impossible for that person to be GG! (And I hated Chuck. I didn't see any great evolution. He started as an attempted rapist, and he treated Blair horribly, before, during, and after their relationship. They only ended up together to tie up their story thread.)

I can't recall what point it started going a bit downhill, maybe series 7 or 8? I still like a lot of the storylines but Monica turned into this horrible screechy caricature who did nothing but clean and be a bit of a bitch. Chandler got all red and...boring? Phoebe got a bit blah.

And Joey had a frontal lobotomy at some point. He started out as a normal person, and ended up not being able to function without assistance.

IpanemaGallina · 23/06/2020 17:15

Homeland

BlusteryLake · 23/06/2020 17:20

Killing Eve. The first series was great, second ridiculous and the third just meh. Some things seem to have quite a short shelf life.
