What did you like until it 'got a bit rubbish?'

I loved watching Sherlock but then the last few series I found beyond awful and ridiculous! Gone was (imo) the clever writing and semi-believable show.

Also found shopaholic series got overly rubbish towards the end. Same with the I heart book series. Saying that, I know they're not award-winning literature to start with.

Forget changing your likes and dislikes. What series of books/films/tv shows/music did you like until.. it changed?

Not surprised at all the mentions for Lost. I remember getting that sinking feeling halfway through the final series when I realised that there was no way on earth they could ever explain everything they needed to in the remaining episodes. Especially the polar bears.

They then went and did the same thing to Fringe which in the final series jumped forwards in time 20 years for no good reason whatsoever. We still had lovely Walter Bishop though so that’s something to be thankful for.

When I was younger Findus crispy pancakes and potato waffles used to taste amazing. I don’t know what happened to them.

Buffy season six. Need I say more

I loved Buffy season six...but you are totally right. It should have ended at season 5, that would have been a sad but perfect ending, especially considering she was a Slayer. I did still love the last two seasons but yeah. I get you.

This will be unpopular but I have to put forward Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Ir all felt forced and desperate - so much about wands!!! - and so much camping and stropping and not enough Hogwarts.

Suits.

Quite an easy watch and good characters which gradually became caricatures of themselves.

Harvey, The hot shot millionaire lawyer who had his pick of any equally wealthy, talented women going for his quirky secretary.

Lewis, extremely impressive and talented but socially awkward partner in the firm becoming a buffoonish clown.

It was so obviously led by what the fans liked about the show but just over exaggerated them too much and lost the substance and integrity of the characters.

Funnyface1 · 23/06/2020 17:59

Ray Donovan

The walking dead

"Hotel" American horror story. The other seasons I've enjoyed to varying degrees but that was mostly crap.

Imissmoominmama · 23/06/2020 18:02

Not Going Out. I used to love it until they got married.

Yes! The later episodes when there was 3 kids. Not funny at all.
Vintagehearts · 23/06/2020 18:12

My Family. It wasn't really funny after the older brother Nick left..

DrCoconut · 23/06/2020 18:22

Outlander. It should have been killed off after the second book. Maybe even the first. You can have (way way way) too much of a good thing. It just turned into carry on 18th century and has turned historical places into naff tourist traps.

LunaNorth · 23/06/2020 18:28

You, on Netflix.

I enjoyed the first series, preposterous though it was.

But to stretch it to a second? Nah. Not buying it.

Mrsjayy · 23/06/2020 18:29

My dd works near 1 of the Outlander locations and she says idiots try to climb down it Hmm

Plusher · 23/06/2020 18:45

Glastonbury.

Amazing until the late 80s. Then shit. Killed off entirely now by TV and social media. That pretty much goes for all festivals, really.

Yes used to be for people who were generally into the music. Now it's a "thing"

Not Going Out - started going downhill when Tim left but there were still some good episodes (the Pointless one is brilliant), now it is like a different show. That isn’t that funny. Trouble is it was originally a more ‘adult’ sitcom (the porn film, the drugs, the stalker, the bath pregnancy) but handled superbly by Mack’s writing. Now, he has to write family-friendly plots that just aren’t funny (the one when they’re in the car going to catch a ferry is excruciating) or stretch to the realms of the unbelievable (see last years Christmas special). The kids featured a lot less in the last series and I wonder if Lee read the reviews and decided to centre the plots round the adults again; the escape room showed a touch of the old NGO.

The trouble is once kids are introduced it constrains the other characters too much; I read an interview with Sue Townsend where she said her biggest mistake as an author was to give Adrian Mole a young son as she could only have him do things when the child was at school.

The Roy Grace series by Peter James. Excellent start, first five or six books really good but dragged the missing wife story on way too long and sick of reading how perfect his new girlfriend is. FFS. Give her a flaw! She just comes across as a bland, one-dimensional character who the reader can’t get interested in.

Agatha Raisin books; while I’m sort of sad there’ll be no more as the author passed away they were getting ridiculous. Characters who’d been a mainstay disappeared without explanation, backstories changed and the last one I read had such a huge plot hole that I can’t believe it got past the proof reading stage. I do enjoy them but there is a marked contrast between the early ones and the later ones.

ChrissyPlummer · 23/06/2020 19:24

*one of her biggest mistakes I meant

RunningNinja79 · 23/06/2020 19:26

@ShirleyPhallus
Pretty little liars

The latter seasons are just complete nonsense and the fake English accent at the end was ludicrous

That accent just ruined the whole show for me. To the PP that said about her being proud of that accent - after I watched the final episode (which had a stupid ending anyway without that dodgy accent) I googled to see what other people thought. I came to the conclusion that those in the UK hated it, but the American's thought it was brilliantly done.

I came to say my first thought which was Once Upon A Time, but as I was reading through the thread I realised its any show thats on for more than 5 or 6 seasons.

Also marathon training. That's good until you get to 15+ miles. Then it all becomes a bit tedious. The finish line feeling is worth it though - shame it can't be said about TV shows.

OP - I love the I heart books, even though the last one (Hawaii) has a really cheesy ending . Only watched the shopoholick film once. Might go through those books next.

Crinkle77 · 23/06/2020 19:28

I agree about Big Bang. It was hilarious right up until the new season after Howard and Bernie got married and he went to space. It just wasn't that funny. It was like a switch was flicked. They changed Sheldon"s character and it was like he became a parody of himself. In the later series I started to dislike Penny because she just seemed to be grumping at Leonard all the time.

Also Cherry 7 Up used to love it and was so excited to see it in the shop the other day but it was horrible and tasteless.

Sparklingbrook · 23/06/2020 19:32

I had a Nobbly Bobbly today and it wasn't as nice. The hundreds and thousands were really gritty.

DrDreReturns · 23/06/2020 19:33

I enjoyed the first couple of series of the A word but the last one sucked. I gave up after three episodes. It wasn't about autism any more but about the really argumentative adults who started to grate.

CostaCosta · 23/06/2020 19:34

Suits

bluebird243 · 23/06/2020 19:36

Broadchurch. The first series was excellent, then went downhill.

Killing Eve. I really enjoyed the first series, next wasn't great, the third was just awful and ridiculous.

keiratwiceknightly · 23/06/2020 19:40

Next. Was really great - classy, well cut and quite expensive in the 80s. Really aspirational. Now it's George at Asda but twice the price. Shit.

BadAlice · 23/06/2020 19:40

Agree with Game of Thrones.

Parks and Recreation was brilliant for the first few seasons but I actually found the last season a struggle to get through.

DH has this habit of deciding everything is shit after a couple of series or even one series! See: After Life, Friday Night Dinner and People Just Do Nothing for recent examples. It means in order to see anything through I have to put up with him saying ‘they’ve already done this’ or ‘it’s jumped the shark now’ for an entire series (or several)!
