What did you like until it 'got a bit rubbish?'

I loved watching Sherlock but then the last few series I found beyond awful and ridiculous! Gone was (imo) the clever writing and semi-believable show.

Also found shopaholic series got overly rubbish towards the end. Same with the I heart book series. Saying that, I know they're not award-winning literature to start with.

Forget changing your likes and dislikes. What series of books/films/tv shows/music did you like until.. it changed?

I couldn't see if it's already been mentioned, but Jonathan Creek once Caroline Quentin left. She was an excellent character in it.

Even worse when they married him off in later series. As a PP noted above when characters are given children, it constrains the main character too much.

Oh, I liked Mad Men right to the end, apart from Don's very last few scenes really. I didn't mind his road trip and I liked Betty being ill (that sounds weird but you know what I mean). I enjoyed Joan setting up on her own and asking Peggy to join her.
I liked the merger stuff, in large part because that was when the amazing Jared Harris joined.

I binge watched them all a couple of years ago, I still quite liked the ones without Caroline even if they weren’t as good, then once he was married it was just crap. Married, out the windmill, in an ordinary job...they took out all the great stuff that made the character who he was!

I never finished Breaking Bad.

Vintagehearts · 24/06/2020 15:58

Ally Mcbeal. The first 4 seasons were great but they spoilt it in the last season when half the main characters weren't in it and Ally had a 10 year old daughter appear out the blue!

I always thought it was odd that Renee, Ally's long term roommate and friend wouldn't appear at all when ally moved house and suddenly had a 10 year old daughter!

yes to Killing Eve, perhaps Villanelle should have succeeded, couldn't get through the first few episodes of the last series.
Malteasers, no longer malty, gooey, or nice chocolate, just tasteless sweetish dust.

Homeland. The end of Brody killed it for me. Carrie wasn’t likeable enough to lead it on her own. It mildly improver when Quinn got a bigger role but then he went off the rails too and it was just watching 2 screwed up people continue to screw up.

None of the clever scriptwriting and “whose side is who’s” of series 1-3!

Geekster1963 · 24/06/2020 17:21

Sophie Hannah books. The first three were really good reads since then they have been utter drivel.

KenAdams · 24/06/2020 22:19

I agree with Homeland. Carrie would never have been allowed to keep her job with her mental health issues she needed some proper help and the baby stuff was all a bit odd.

Just thought of another one. Ikea sheets - the gaspa range was fantastic, lovely and cool and smooth. Then they improved them and now they're scratchy and horrible.

Bring back the nice cotton ones!

Once upon a time. The first 2 series were brilliant, it went downhill rapidly after that.

angelcakebananabrain · 26/06/2020 08:04

Just remembered one, google! Don’t think it’s actually their fault, more than there are 4.2 billion webpages out there (according to google) but I remember back when it first started and internet being available to the masses and in people’s homes was still fairly new (I know it had been around for years before that but I certainly didn’t know anyone who had it in their home) you could be pretty vague on google and odds are you’d still get what you were looking for. Now even when I’m incredibly specific, I still often end up having to wade through a load of completely unrelated stuff before finding my answer.

Killing Eve, brilliant & quirky at first, unwatchable now.

dayswithaY · 26/06/2020 18:54

I agree with Patricia Cornwell, just unreadable now but also John Grisham. He is a brilliant writer, so many of his books are gripping but he's run out of ideas and how many variations of the same theme can you have?

Gogglebox - original idea, very funny and relatable but it's all so try hard and predictable now, just comes across as fake. I love the original people - Sandy and Sandra, Leon and June, Steph and Dom.

Tin Star, Rescue Me, neither could sustain a second series.

Magazines such as Heat and Closer, I know they're trash but back in the early 2000s they had genuine celeb gossip and good interviews with interesting people. Now it's just TOWIE and Hollyoaks.

Loose Women. When it started it was hosted by Kaye Adams and Nadia Sawahla and it was worth watching, good debates, people like Carol McGiffin and Denise Welch who weren't afraid to speak their minds. It's awful, cheesy, lightweight, inoffensive fluff now - desperate to appear woke unless they are baiting Kim Woodburn.

Kardashians - not even trying to pretend it's not scripted anymore! It's like a Sixth Form drama exercise, they truly have exited the planet.
