Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

Me too! I've been watching UA81 EWR-MAN.

lyralalala · 09/02/2020 07:24

They seem to be descending toward Copenhagen - that’s some divert!!

EB8471 was the other one I’ve been following. Wamos Air from Wuhan. Had no destination listed at first, but landed at Brize Norton

EWR is descending now, maybe Schipol??

AlphaVTango · 09/02/2020 07:34

Be easier to get replacement crew in Copenhagen so assume that's why they're heading there.

lyralalala · 09/02/2020 07:35

Looks like Schipol for them

They are big diverts

I know the big Emirates plane from Dubai to Glasgow had to divert to Manchester for a couple of hours last night before making another attempt, but Copenhagen and Schipol are quite out the way!

OP posts:
lyralalala · 09/02/2020 07:36

That is true. I imagine with all the diverts there is going to be crew and planes all out of kilter for a while

I worked in Airline Ops for years, left 10 years ago now though, so love all this stuff!

nakedavengeragain · 09/02/2020 07:42

I spotted the Wigan to Brize Norton 747 an hour ago!

nakedavengeragain · 09/02/2020 07:42

WUHAN -BRIZE NORTON. not Wigan!

lyralalala · 09/02/2020 07:42

I’m scared of flying so flight radar is my visual “look at all those planes and how safe it is” in the run up to going on a flight

Randomly works better than the courses I’ve been on. I think it’s the ability to zoom out and see so many flights; the perspective it gives seems to work

"They are big diverts"

Given the wind speed and direction they'll be quite possibly looking have to find somewhere where either the wind is less or where runway more aligned into a southerly/south westerly wind ( e.g. Stansted, Copenhagen, Manchester; Schipol). Heathrow/Gatwick lose out on days like today because their runways area aligned East/West.

The other issue for the likes of the 380 is diverting to an airport that has the ground infrastructure to accept them.

lyralalala · 09/02/2020 07:49

I can only imagine Stanstead couldn’t take the Norwegian air one. It was certainly heading there before heading toward Copenhagen going by the curve of its flight

If Stanstead is getting battered by flights from Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow, as well as their own I suppose it’s understandable they can’t take them all!

DI7018, the Norwegian air Dreamliner, has landed in Copenhagen

BA2166 going around at LGW.

Yes, that's the headache of diverts - where to go, who can handle and the logistics of getting back on schedule.

AlphaVTango · 09/02/2020 08:36

BA2166 has made 3 attempts, now diverting.

lyralalala · 09/02/2020 08:37

I wonder where that will end up

"BA2166 going around at LGW."

Nervous flyers look away now...

Thanks for the heads up..just popped in for a look at FR24 and it seems like multiple go-arounds for the 2166, they are now holding, and also a Norwegian went around as well.

All getting a bit horrid at Gatters...

Kernowgal · 09/02/2020 08:41

It’s interesting looking at the expected arrival time vs the actual arrival time for the transatlantic flights - the jet stream is giving everyone a boost!

notimagain · 09/02/2020 08:46

There ave been some fast crossings..I hear somebody did BOS-LHR overnight in 5:00 and I gather there has been at least one JFK-LHR in 5:15.....

Looks like the Norwegian has diverted from Gatwick heading up and off to the north east ? Stansted or Schipol?..BA2166 still holding..

BabbleBee · 09/02/2020 08:47

Virgin Atlantic having an attempt at landing at LGW now

chipsandpeas · 09/02/2020 08:48

Katowice to LTN looks like a toddlers scribble.

BabbleBee · 09/02/2020 08:52

VS58 didn’t make the landing.... followed it to just below 1000ft and thought it was going to make it but it’s come up again
