How do you pronounce ciabatta

TrixieFranklin · 20/08/2019 11:26

I've just realised my husband, mum and dad all pronounce Ciabatta completely differently.
Between them they say:
Key-a-bar-ter
Chee-bar-ter
Chee-a-bat-cha

Now I've been saying it, looking at it and thinking about it too much and the whole word looks ridiculous now!

How do you say it?

How do you say it, OP?

BlackNoir · 20/08/2019 11:33

Another vote for Chee-a-batta lived in southern Italy for a year in my youth.

Oblomov19 · 20/08/2019 11:36

Chee a batta.

poppym12 · 20/08/2019 11:36

Cha-batta with a slight 'ia' in the first bit then a longer 'a' in the second bit. Sounds OK in my head.

Nottobesoldseparately · 20/08/2019 11:38

Cha baat a

bellinisurge · 20/08/2019 11:39

Chee a batta.

Tableclothing · 20/08/2019 11:41

Cha bat a

In Italian the 'ci' letter combo is pronounced 'ch'.

NameChange84 · 20/08/2019 11:41

Locally we all say SEE-UH-BAT-UH.

I know this isn’t how it’s pronounced it Italy but somehow it’s become part of the local dialect.

Jamhandprints · 20/08/2019 11:41

Cha Bat A
I thought the ci made a ch sound, like in cappucCIno

blackpinkinyourarea · 20/08/2019 11:42

Chee a batta

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/08/2019 11:42

See a bat a

beckieperk · 20/08/2019 11:44

Chee batta?? That's what I say anyway.

EllieMentry · 20/08/2019 11:45

Cha-barter

LoseLooseLucy · 20/08/2019 11:46

Chee a batta

lazylinguist · 20/08/2019 11:46

It's not chee-a-bata. The 'i' is only there to make the 'c' into a 'ch' sound, it doesn't make an 'ee' sound at all.

It's pronounced 'cha-bata'. The 'a' is somewhere between a flat 'a' and a long 'ah'.

Branleuse · 20/08/2019 11:47

Chebatta
