How do you pronounce ciabatta

I've just realised my husband, mum and dad all pronounce Ciabatta completely differently.
Between them they say:
Key-a-bar-ter
Chee-bar-ter
Chee-a-bat-cha

Now I've been saying it, looking at it and thinking about it too much and the whole word looks ridiculous now!

How do you say it?

PullingMySocksUp yes! This thread is fine, but sometimes people get really irate about the seemingly stray Rs, it would save a lot of aggro!

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave Rissy-onee and tag-lee-a-telly surely? Grin

I lived in Italy for a few years as a child so the pronunciation is pretty much second nature to me, but a while back I saw this meme which had me scratching my head for a while. Eventually I realised that in English, most people don’t pronounce the “gna” sound, it sounds like “nia” and then the meme makes sense, but I was baffled for way too long!

I say che my friend says key....... i think I'm right.

notastealthboast · 20/08/2019 14:29

Cringe so bad when people say it "see a batter"!!!

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 20/08/2019 14:31

This thread should be spread far and wide.

Cha- batter. Three syllables only!

MIL gets a p involved in there somehow. Infuriates me!

ReginaGeorgeous · 20/08/2019 14:32

Chee-a-batta. Should probably add that I was fucking dreadful at languages at school.

Cambionome · 20/08/2019 14:38

What cool said, although I would add that Italians pronounce both letters when you have a double letter, so it's cha bat ta with both "t"s pronounced iyswim. Please, please listen. I'm going to strangle the next person who says chee-ah-barta in my hearing. Angry

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 20/08/2019 14:40

Chi batta

NameChange84 · 20/08/2019 14:46

This has reminded me of the time my friend’s Mum who was as Scouse as they come said,

“The other day I had a LOVELY fucka...fucka... oh what d’ya call it? FUCKACHEEA!”

Focaccia, of course.

See-uh-bat-uh pisses me off to say but if you don’t say it that way where I live everyone thinks you are an arsehole and will tell you to your face (even though it’s bloody wrong). I get enough hassle for getting Latte and Jalapeños right, I’ll be driven out of town with pitch forks if I add Chabat-ta to the mix.

Actually, maybe I should just move.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 20/08/2019 14:46

Also say tag la telly for tagliatelle

happycamper11 · 20/08/2019 14:53

Chia bah ta where are those extra R's coming from? there is no R in ciabatta

Waffles80 · 20/08/2019 14:57

My Italian friend says that you “pronounce every single letter” of every word in Italian.

MouthyHarpy · 20/08/2019 15:08

In Italian, the '"ci" sound turns into "chuh" You don't sound the 'i' sound separately.

It's like Gianni (Italian version of John). It's Djanni with the 'j' as in jelly, and a very slight 'yuh' sound in there.

Chee-a-batta is barbarous.

Melassa · 20/08/2019 15:17

Italian here, it’s Cha-batta (or near enough, within the limits of English phonetics vs Italian phonetics). The i is there just to soften the c, the same way the h is added in English.

Similarly, bruschetta is broosketta, NOT brooshetta. The amount of times I’ve had my pronunciation “corrected” by waiting staff when visiting the UK. I tend to let it go after an inward chuckle, but when my DD was small and a huge lover of bruschette she used to get quite upset that the waiting staff hadn’t understood what she wanted Grin.

testing987654321 · 20/08/2019 15:29

It's almost as though we anglicise words in the UK. Shocking!

iklboo · 20/08/2019 15:36

I get enough hassle for getting Latte and Jalapeños right

BIL3 calls them jalla-pee-nee-os and puts them on his tortilla (rhymed with gorilla).

CassianAndor · 20/08/2019 15:41

Chih-battah.

No, how does everyone pronounce 'croissant'? I pronounce the 'r' as an 'r' but DH and FIL say cWoissant.

Who's right let it be me let it be me let it be me?

iklboo · 20/08/2019 15:43

Kwa-son

I would say “cross-ont” even though I know that’s wrong and probably makes French people want to vomit Blush

whattodowith · 20/08/2019 16:08

Chee a batta. That is how the Italian owners of our local Italian restaurant pronounce it so 🤷🏻‍♀️

whattodowith · 20/08/2019 16:09

Cross ont is ignorant AF. You know it’s incorrect so why continue?

It’s cwass-Awn.
Dad is French, this is how he pronounces it.

wowfudge · 20/08/2019 16:12

I'm glad someone mentioned pronouncing both the Ts - I've got an Italian friend who always bangs on about pronouncing all the letters in a word.

lazylinguist · 20/08/2019 16:13

Chee a batta. That is how the Italian owners of our local Italian restaurant pronounce it so

That's wrong. As the Italian person confirmed a few posts back.

Cambionome · 20/08/2019 16:19

Chee a batta. That's how the Italian owners of our local Italian restaurant pronounce it...

They are not Italian, love. Either that, or they've been in the UK too long.

Abstractedobstructed · 20/08/2019 16:21

Cha- batta

Cha- like the beginning of "chav" (sorry, only word I can think of with same sound)
