How do you pronounce ciabatta

TrixieFranklin · 20/08/2019 11:26

I've just realised my husband, mum and dad all pronounce Ciabatta completely differently.
Between them they say:
Key-a-bar-ter
Chee-bar-ter
Chee-a-bat-cha

Now I've been saying it, looking at it and thinking about it too much and the whole word looks ridiculous now!

How do you say it?

Did anyone see the video which did the rounds the other day of Joe Wicks pronouncing Brie and burrata reasonably accurately but pronouncing Wensleydale as ‘wensley-daah-lee’?

I saw that and wondered if he watched Emmer-daah-lay while eating it Grin

AllieDidNotDeserveBea · 21/08/2019 18:02

Chi (short i) - barta

EverTheConundrum · 21/08/2019 18:03

Cha-batter

AllieDidNotDeserveBea · 21/08/2019 18:07

Grat-si-eh

Where does the T sound in grazie come from?

AbsentmindedWoman · 21/08/2019 18:09

Is there a foolproof way to learn to roll an r?

My throat just gets muddled and I can't do it, end up with a sort of light growling noise Grin

BlueJava · 21/08/2019 18:11

Go to google translate, in the English box type in the work. Press the "sound" icon. You can hear it as many times as you like. I do this for words I don't know how to say!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 21/08/2019 18:11

Yum. I was wondering what to make for dinner.
Bruschetta it is!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/08/2019 18:14

It's the 'z'. Like pizza.

lazylinguist · 21/08/2019 18:15

Z in Italian is pronounced 'ts'. In German too actually.

PuppyMonkey · 21/08/2019 18:19

I pronounce ciabatta “that awful dry bread.”Wink

DP has a terrible problem with “pain au chocolat” and insists on calling them “choc au pans” Grin

BeyondMyWits · 21/08/2019 18:20

Z in Italian is pronounced 'ts'.

Does that mean Prezzo is pronounced Pretso?

'cos I've heard it pronounced many ways - but usually Pray-zo round here.

uppershopping · 21/08/2019 18:20

Now then, penne causes a problem in DH's house... also Siciliana

AllieDidNotDeserveBea · 21/08/2019 18:21

Ahhh, like the Russian ц

TheHumanSatsuma · 21/08/2019 18:22

cha (chu) batta.
the 8 after the c makes it be pronounced ch not hard c

Confusedbeetle · 21/08/2019 18:23

@beyondmy wits, yes in Italy a z is pronounced either tz or dz depending on the word, Pizza and Prezzo are tz

Nonnymum · 21/08/2019 18:24

I say chee bat ah. Don't know if it is correct.

Melassa · 21/08/2019 18:29

Italian z is pronounced tz, like for pizza you say peetza and not pizza (like whizzer). It’s actually the hardest sound for foreigners to get right.

Just like Italians who have been taught that the English a is in fact an e. Apple is therefore pronounced epple, this is what is taught in schools and has been since the dawn of time. My mum still cannot pronounce an English a properly. Drives me mad.

On another note, Italians love using English words, particularly in business. When I do a presentation in Italian I have to mispronounce words the Italian way or I just get blank looks, even from people who speak English. Bizarrely I can do the same presentation in English, pronouncing all the words normally, and no one has any problems with comprehension. It was the same in France (although I was encouraged to use the French equivalent more often).

Melassa · 21/08/2019 18:31

Cross post with everyone else.

Yes Allie, just like the Russian ц, but a bit harder.

soreknees · 21/08/2019 18:34

Chi-bata

666onmyhead · 21/08/2019 18:34

"Bread"

wowfudge · 21/08/2019 18:47

Rolling an r - hmm: you put the tip of your tongue against your hard palate gently as you make an r sound and the tip rolls forward and vibrates giving the sound.

MyElbowIsItchy · 21/08/2019 18:49

Che-bata

Bwekfusth · 21/08/2019 18:50

I say keyabatta. But I very much believe I'm in the monitory now!

MyNewBearTotoro · 21/08/2019 18:51

Chee uh batter

iklboo · 21/08/2019 20:47

Apparently he's 'cleared it up'. He knows everyone is trying to wind him up because he knows his cheeses and he's loved it since he was a kid.

Face. Palm.
