How do you pronounce ciabatta

I've just realised my husband, mum and dad all pronounce Ciabatta completely differently.
Between them they say:
Key-a-bar-ter
Chee-bar-ter
Chee-a-bat-cha

Now I've been saying it, looking at it and thinking about it too much and the whole word looks ridiculous now!

How do you say it?

I work for an engineering company with a fair amount of Italians. I always have to suppress a smile when they're having animated conversations about sheet piles - sheet sounds rather like shit in their accents.

Doobigetta · 21/08/2019 21:03

Ciabatta- cha-bat-ta

Tagliatelle- tie-a-TELL-eh

Riccione- Rich-ee-oh-neh although the ee is quite short.

Tagliatelle- tie-a-TELL-eh

Well that's spun my head, how does Taglia make "tie-a" ?

Because ‘gli’ in Italian is a trigraph with a similar sound to the middle of ‘million’: aglio, figlio etc. ‘gn’ has a similar function - you don’t pronounce a hard ‘g’ in lasagne or signor, for example.

I make an effort to speak different languages in other countries, but couldn't give a stuff about how people pronounce tagliatelle, ciabatta and latte in the UK, as they have become anglicised words. All languages borrow words from other languages and mangle and mispronounce them.

Confusedbeetle - ta for that - (Prezzo = Pretzo) but does that also mean that Zizzi is Zitzee or tzitzee? Everyone seems to say Zee-zee... I give up ... Blush

Everyone seems to say Zee-zee... I give up

What everyone seems to say (in the UK when pronouncing foreign words) is not usually a good guide! Yes, if you pronounce it like an Italian would, it would be tseetsee. Don't know how the restaurant chain wants its name pronounced - afaik it's not actually Italian-owned, just 'Italian-inspired' according to a quick Google.

ThanksItHasPockets · 22/08/2019 09:10

Yes, Zizzi isn’t actually a word in Italian so I think an anglicised pronunciation is acceptable! Incidentally, ‘zizi’ (zeezee) is what little French boys call their willies, which caused much hilarity when we took some French friends and their children into town.

“haha - at Gloucester Quays "Fresh Panini's are made all day"”

Added to my reasons to prefer Cheltenham Wink There’s an Italian deli up the road with a menu of panini describing each individual panino on offer. Heaven for a pedant.

Ohflippineck · 22/08/2019 09:28

Chee-batta according to Italian friends.

Only just discovered that chip-ot-el is chip-oat-lay though Grin
