How do you pronounce ciabatta

TrixieFranklin · 20/08/2019 11:26

I've just realised my husband, mum and dad all pronounce Ciabatta completely differently.
Between them they say:
Key-a-bar-ter
Chee-bar-ter
Chee-a-bat-cha

Now I've been saying it, looking at it and thinking about it too much and the whole word looks ridiculous now!

How do you say it?

Ch-ia batta, I think, pronunciation threads always make me overthink how pronounce anything. My ndn probably thinks I’m mad as I’ve just said it out loud about a dozen times. The dog is giving me a look too.

Malibucyprus · 20/08/2019 11:56

Cha - batta

Tighnabruaich · 20/08/2019 11:57

*It's not chee-a-bata. The 'i' is only there to make the 'c' into a 'ch' sound, it doesn't make an 'ee' sound at all.

It's pronounced 'cha-bata'. The 'a' is somewhere between a flat 'a' and a long 'ah'.*

This is correct. cha-bata.

homemadecommunistrussia · 20/08/2019 11:57

jomaIone · 20/08/2019 13:25

I can't imagine it pronounced char barter?? Where are all the Rs coming from????

I say cha-batta

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 20/08/2019 13:35

JomaIone this is a thing that always pops up on pronunciation threads, but basically people with non-rhetoric accents will often write “ar” for a long a “ah” sound. This is because someone with a non-rhetoric accent doesn’t pronounce the r in words like hard and charge, they say “hahd” and “chahge”, so to them, “ah” and “ar” are pronounced the same. A rhetoric speaker does pronounce the r, and like you is left wondering why on earth people are using “ar” to signify an “ah” sound, because they sound different in their accent. Hope that makes sense!

Riccione (the town) and Tagliatelle are always good ones for mis-pronunciations too.....have a go.
