Can we have a Star Trek thread?

Been binge watching DS9 mostly. I love Star Trek, but some things make me wonder.,

Considering they must have had long shifts, I wonder what breaks they got.

And how could they actually breed with other species. Was that actually ever explained?

Anyone got a favourite/worst species?

My worst is the Skreea (sp?) from a DS9 ep. So ungrateful and wanted to claim Bajor as their own. Although there are other god awful species too.

Also Garak is my favourite character in all the Trek 'verse.

I'll join in. I'm openly proud that I share a birthday with Captain Picard. It pleases me immensely!

I never really got into DS9...I think the Ferengi spoilt it for me, I have an irrational disgust of them that I can't explain.

Watched most of TNG and a lot of Voyager. Never watched Enterprise and now slowly working my way through Discovery (although taking a break over the holidays because my mum is staying and she'll talk all the way through it!).

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 20:43

I never got into DS9 at first, I was always a TNG and Voyager fan. DS9 is quite good but Quark really does irk me at times.

How Odo let him get away with all those dodgy dealings I will never know.

I got bored of Enterprise. Couldnt get into Discovery. Even though Jason Isaacs is in it.

Never got into DS9, the Borg scare me. I also can’t stand Q,nasty little bully!

MyFlabberIsAghast · 05/08/2019 20:51

I'm liking Discovery but I seem to have a very short attention span post kids...my boyfriend says it's worth persevering with though.

I have a girl crush on Tasha Ya...really wish she'd not been killed off.

I find Harry Kim really annoying but not sure why.

I love the films too though I have a real mental block over Into Darkness...I've seen it several times and I just cannot remember the plot at all. I know it involves Khan and the end is a reboot of the end of The Wrath of Khan but with Spock and Kirk swapped but that is literally all I can retain...it's really odd. Loved Beyond so much. And Star Trek IV which is an unusual choice I know.

FluffytheGoldfish · 05/08/2019 20:55

Just got tickets for Wrath of Khan with the talk from William Shatner in Glagow next year. Dh has the same birthday as William Shatner.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/08/2019 20:59

I was just watching The Next Generation and Data was talking about terrorism in history and mentioned the Irish reunification of 2024. 😁. Not seeming quite as unlikely now as it did when they made the episode.

balonzz · 05/08/2019 20:59

I am old enough to have watched the original series when it was first on British tv and I've loved most of its incarnations since then.

What are people's views of the films?

My fave baddies are the Borg.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:00

Not seeming quite as unlikely now as it did when they made the episode.

The Simpsons got predictions right maybe Star Trek will too. Tis not impossible.

I love Star Trek. My first crush as a little girl was Kirk Blush With his eyeliner and crossover cardigan, all soft focus with his earth thing called kissing Grin

Their moneyless society fascinates me. I have questions! No one works for monetary gain - only for personal fulfillment. Sounds wonderful. But - are there no crap (unfulfilling) jobs anymore then, or do robots do them all by then? And ... the workshy lazy buggers? Bred out by then, or still part of the society of the future but just allowed to be lazy? (And not on benefits 'cos there's no money ...) Confused

Laiste · 05/08/2019 21:09

Films - best one for me is still ST Voyager. I clearly remember the first time i watched it and i was riveted at the flight into the machine planet cloud thing. Riveted i tell you! And i didn't see it coming at all that it was Voyager I at all BlushGrin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:12

I think there is still money but poverty had been pretty much eradicated by that point, along with most illnesses. I think by then you were expected to do your part, whatever that part was.

I do wonder what the Voyager crew would have got when they returned to Earth. It's not like they had a functioning economy on the ship. Seven years of overtime is rack up to got alot.

Big TNG and voyager fan here. Recently started working through voyager and Janeway has always been my girl idol she's just awesome. It was so nice to see a woman captain!

@laiste the money less society gets me too! Picard says in first contact we work to better ourselves. Everyone!? I really want to know how it works.

Has everyone seen the Picard TV show amazon are bringing out?! I can't wait

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:13

Oh and Tom Paris was my first Trek crush.

Big Voyager fan Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:16

I cant wait for Picard. Brent Spiner is gonna be in some of it. I love Data.

Ronsters · 05/08/2019 21:20

I used to love TNG, DS9 and the others never really interested me.
The Borg were the best enemies. I found the Ferengi mildly repulsive, I can imagine them being smelly. Bit stupid too, God knows how they got into space.
The vulcans were a bit annoying, way too lofty and superior.

Data was one of my favourite characters, he even had a cat and an evil twin.
I thought Geordie's eye visor thing was a bit ridiculous, considering how much technology they had.

I always wondered about those catsuits they always wore. Imagine if you'd had a heavy night and felt a bit bloated. Especially with Commander Riker hanging around, ogling everyone.

I also thought there was a real air of nepotism around Dr Beverley Krusher's son. No working his way up the greasy pole at Starfleet for him, he was straight on to the bridge.

BillywilliamV · 05/08/2019 21:21

Used to have a real thing for Captain Picard in my 20’s. Now I find the velour/ lycra thing a bit off putting. DH had a serious 7 of 9 fetish..

magicstar1 · 05/08/2019 21:22

I’m a huge Star Trek fan. We still watch TNG most nights on Sky when it’s on, I’m rewatching DS9 on Netflix too, and dipping in and out of Voyager on the Horror channel. I never saw Enterprise, but did see Discovery...not mad about it though.
Can’t wait for Picard!!!

magicstar1 · 05/08/2019 21:23

Oh and Darmok has to be the best episode ever - Shaka when the walls fell Sad

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:25

My favourite villain. So villanous, he doesnt actually see himself as a villan.

I only ever loved the original series. My mum watched them back in the day and we had all the videos! I love having it on in the background on Netflix now. Although as an adult I realise that I know the episodes so well there really weren't enough of them! My family loved all the other series and DS9 but I never got into it.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:26

Tut picture didnt post. Gul Dukat is my favourite villain. Something rather despicably sexy about him.

JanewaysBun · 05/08/2019 21:30

I love Voyager! Even though it's pretty cheesy I love some of the themes and love Kate Mulgrew as an actress.
Harry Kim is super annoying as PP have mentioned, no personality. I quite like Q but by VoYager he had been tamed somewhat.

Always wondered why all ST "civillian" clothes are so ugly, surely they have colour changing gravity defying materials in the future?
