Can we have a Star Trek thread?

Been binge watching DS9 mostly. I love Star Trek, but some things make me wonder.,

Considering they must have had long shifts, I wonder what breaks they got.

And how could they actually breed with other species. Was that actually ever explained?

Anyone got a favourite/worst species?

My worst is the Skreea (sp?) from a DS9 ep. So ungrateful and wanted to claim Bajor as their own. Although there are other god awful species too.

I LOVE Star Trek. My DH is all about Star Wars. But we make it work. Wink

I haven't watched all of Enterprise yet. I know its been years. I love Scott Sounds Like Dracula Whatshisname but just couldn’t get properly into it.

I love all the rest, even the rubbish episodes, or not so great films. I even read Star Trek fanfic! Some great stuff out there, just got to filter all the smut/full porn first! Grin

A friend of mine recently worked with Neelix and got me his autograph, I am still thrilled about it.

Fav episode is the DS9 tribles (sp)

Dogdogcat · 06/08/2019 02:57

I didn't like the original series too much, but really enjoyed TNG, DS9 and Voyager. I loved the Q episodes.

The Picard senior crew members all on shift together thing: at least they'd stopped sending them all off the ship together to be first mission down onto unknown/hostile worlds, as they did in Kirk's day Grin

Laiste · 06/08/2019 07:42

Am i allowed to mention Galaxy Quest? It's well up there in my top 10 films precisely because of my fondness for ST.

''Where are you going?''
''To see if there's a pub!''

Another huge Trekkie here, I think it’s one thing that brought DH and I together.
Can’t wait for the new Picard absolutely adore Patrick Stewart.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2019 07:44

Well obviously they had to stop doing that when they changed their uniforms to red!Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 07:49

I loved Galaxy Quest. Alan Rickman was amazing in that.

I'm trying to get DD into Trek but she has so far resisted my attempts. I suspect thats because there are no Shawn Mendes-esque boys for her to fawn over.

I too am rewatching DS9. Love it but one burning question -,they’re in the middle of a war but they get to swan off on personal quests whenever they like eg in the most recent episode Worf decides to go off with Martok tonget Jadzia into Stovolkor and O’Brien nd Bashir just decide to go too. What about their responsibilities on DS9, in, I repeat, the middle of a war? And as for Sisko spending 3 months on earth in the middle of a war ....

Love it though.

We saw Patrick Stewart in a play a few years ago where his character had to cope, with bereavement and PS said that at that point he thought of all his old mates in TNG. lovely snippet

Galaxy Quest is loosely included in the Star Trek cannon you know!

Also love it. I've met Patrick Stewart irl (hung around after seeing him in Waiting for Godot)

I have loved the character Picard since 1989. I wasn't even a teenager!

I am beyond excited about Picard. I don't agree with their choice of dog for him though. That was too influenced by the actor, Picard would have something more lithe, statuesque. Actually I think Picard would be a cat man given his love of independence.

I've read many of the novels and have loads of graphic novels. I even have a phaser, tricorder, comm badge and uniform! Oh and a few models of the Enterprise. My heart belongs to D and E.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 07:57

That's one think that did seem weird about DS9. Just take off in the USS Defiant at a moments notice, pop through the wormhole for a jaunt, then pop back.

My favourite DS9 ep was "Civil Defence" That was all on the station and things kept getting worse for them.

Am delighted there are others looking forward to Picard, can't wait.
I loved the new films, especially all the nods to the originals, shame they couldn't agree to do more. Thought the casting was great.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2019 08:12

I can't find the release date... hmph, amazon prime? I just used my free trial for Good Omens. Is there anything else actually worth watching on amazon prime?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 08:28

My brother had a model of DS9 when he was younger. He also had one of those weird shaped mugs.

Errol Marvellous Mrs Maisel has great reviews if you’re into something non science fiction

AngelaScandal · 06/08/2019 09:00

I still have my Starfleet Academy mug somewhere from the Vegas exhibition gift shop. Can I stay?!

The thing that always got me was the holodecks, particularly on voyager although the next gen had the same problem. On voyager there were 2 holodecks, there were about 150 people using said holodecks and splitting the time evenly they would have had 2 hours on the holodecks a week and that did not include any time for working in them which seemed to happen a lot. Add in either sandrine's or the tropical resort that ran all the time in one and you are down to one holodeck to be shared and yet they always seem to be empty when needed and the main character can spend ages and ages in them!

I think the shift thing almost made sense (pretty sure this is how voyager worked and possibly next gen as well) they seemed to run 3 shifts, 1 was the main shift normally called alpha which was the main working day when most of the projects were run etc and was when most of the senior staff were on. Then there was a second shift which used whichever senior staff that weren't on alpha and then there was the third shift that was the night shift run by lower ranking people and commanded by younger lieutenants or the like who needed more command time to progress with their careers. In voyager Harry volunteers for this all the time as he wants the experience. Still seems to be whoever needs to be in that episode is handily on the right shift though!

Amazon prime has some good docs on it.

The food thing on Voyager is another one.

Obviously they need to ration the use of the replicators, so what happens if you run out of rations and you need food or new uniform?

It seemed like Neelix made some grim food, but I suppose if you were hungry, you'd eat it.

Stop wasting energy on the holodecks, maybe?

I see the disappearing posts are still happening.

That would logical, Errol. Those holodecks must have had some hard use over 7 years.

I love TNG. Wednesday nights BBC2 at 6pm. Happy memories.

I love Voyager except for Kes.

Liked parts of DS9. Strange how the captain seemed to become more attractive to me when his hair moved from his head to his face.
Jake was so annoying. Hated Cassidy Yates. Hated odo's constant fawning over Kira.
Loved Quark (and his mum) and Garak. Loved Jadzia. Ezri was a poor replacement.

Never got into Enterprise with it's ridiculous Bon Jovi style theme tune.

I also don't like the original series but do like the reboots.

Will watch Young Spock. Although we know it will have to end with Kirk becoming captain (so they can probably start a new reboot series of the original Trek)

Can't bloody wait for Picard. Seven of 9 in trailer. Not sure if just a quick cameo though.
