Can we have a Star Trek thread?

Been binge watching DS9 mostly. I love Star Trek, but some things make me wonder.,

Considering they must have had long shifts, I wonder what breaks they got.

And how could they actually breed with other species. Was that actually ever explained?

Anyone got a favourite/worst species?

My worst is the Skreea (sp?) from a DS9 ep. So ungrateful and wanted to claim Bajor as their own. Although there are other god awful species too.

I think my all time favourite episode is an old Star Trek, where Mr Spock falls in love and ends up leaving her back in time. It was really sad. I also had a massive crush on Mr Chekhov.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:32

I agree about Civillian clothes, so boring and bland.

Even the off duty and party clothes were a bit crap too.

Ooh yes, love Star Trek! In fact I think I lost a prospective boyfriend in uni when I answered the question of what I'd done that day with "watching Star Trek voyager" he went seriously cold after that (and yet I'd made appreciative noises over his endless series of F1 photos) My DH on the other hand is even nerdier than me!

Watched a lot of the OS and all of TNG and DS9 and despite voyager being my favourite series have never actually managed to watch all of it Blush. Watched some of Enterprise but wasn't too fussed as I don't like when they go back and mess with canon. Love the new films as have no issue with canon being messsed with when they have blatantly changed the whole timeline! Don't like discovery though as it's back to messing with canon and the tone is all wrong. DH is still watching and says it's really good as long as you pretend it's a new sci-fi show and not actually trek Grin

Really excited for Picard. Hope it's not too similar to discovery though.

At the moment I'm watching my way back through stargate Atlantis though.

My first crush as a very very young girl was Mr Spock - I think I was about 6.
Loved Next Gen.
Never watched DS9, I think maybe I didn’t have a telly at the time or was out on the day it was on.
Loved the theme tune and opening credits to Voyager, but it was a bit shit otherwise.
Absolutely adoring Discovery. I’ve got a big old telly and they’ve got a big old CGI budget: just my cup of tea.

FairyAnn · 05/08/2019 21:39

I watched a bit of TNG but became a massive DS9 fan when it first aired. My first non-cartoon crush was Dr Bashir.☺️

I loved the ensemble cast of that series; Garak, Rom, Brunt, Weyoun...

Tried to like Enterprise but felt like every episode had already been done by a previous Trek series.

Haven't watched Discovery yet but very excited for Picard

EggysMom · 05/08/2019 21:45

Liked original, TNG, Voyager.

Liked the first couple of series of DS9 but got bored with the ongoing war; similarly liked the first couple of series of Enterprise just out of curiosity to see initial reactions to all the technology, but lost interest after that.

Am REALLY looking forward to Picard.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 21:46

FairyAnn. I was playing Star Trek Online when who should I have to speak to? An older Dr Bashir. I fangirled a little bit.

I was never massively into DS9, but it probably had my favourite ever Star Trek storyline, about a symbiotic relationship between two species and their subsequent relationships when one partnership ended. Dax.

CharminglyGawky · 05/08/2019 21:59

I follow Robert Picardo on instagram and he posed a photo from a con a few days ago of Bashir, Phlox, The Doctor, and Crusher all in a line. I think they did a panel together. Now that would have been cool to see!

chocolateworshipper · 05/08/2019 22:26

Bloody well love Star Trek! TNG was my favourite, although DS9 became very good too, and I have really enjoyed Discovery. Worst series for me was Enterprise - even though I SO wanted it to work. My claim to fame is that I have seen Sir Patrick acting in real life!

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2019 22:29

Loved it since it began. It's impossible to choose a favourite, except that in general the best are where there's great characters and humour front and centre of the ethical and philosophical issues they encounter. The technology is kind of incidental really.

Looking forward to Picard, and also I've only just read that there will be another series of Discovery.

The thing that's baffling me is wtf went wrong for women's equality between Discovery and TOS.Grin

I really really want a replicator. I fantasise about having one most days when the DCs start demanding to be fed. How brilliant would it be just to say “fish fingers, mashed potato, baked beans. Hot!” (Or whatever)?

I have a nephew that looked JUST like a ferenghi when he was little. Not a great look tbh.

LittleCandle · 05/08/2019 22:46

I love Star Trek, but not Voyager. I did watch bits and pieces of Enterprise, but never quite got into it. I watched all the films. I love TNS and TNG and DS9. I am excited for Picard.

Whoever invented the Borg had a scary mind! The Cardassians were also scary and I agree about Gul Dukot. And why did they never explain about the Klingon's bumpy heads? I adored the anniversary episode with the TOS! Such fun!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 22:47

Id love a replicator. No need to cook.

Im writing a ds9 fanfic atm and its poses more questions. How often do officers get annual leave?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2019 22:49

And why did they never explain about the Klingon's bumpy heads?

If you mean why they weren't bumpy in TOS but then were by TNG, I think there was an explanation in Enterprise.

NationMcKinley · 05/08/2019 22:52

Yes to the AL questions plus it always seemed (I’m a TNG fan) that the most senior staff were on shift together. It would always be Picard, Riker, Worf, Geordie, Data, Troi and co on together. Who took over from them at the end of their shift?? Doesn’t seem like the person doing the rota was very good imo

NationMcKinley · 05/08/2019 22:54

Oh and I’d also like a holodeck to go with my replicator.

I think my favourite character was Lwaxana Troi. Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed etc. Loved how she used to completely flummox Picard Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 22:55

It was like that on voyager and ds9 too. There had to be a relief shift.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2019 22:58

Yes, all the series pretty much have one main crew who are all on duty simultaneously. 'Day' and 'night' shifts make no sense on a starship but maybe they run on an earth-like cycle and all the nocturnal species take over at 'night' ... there could be a whole set of alternative series.Grin

NeonK · 05/08/2019 23:00

Love Star Trek - TNG, Voyager. Never got into DS9 but enjoyed Discovery. And the new films (and not entirely because of Chris Pine...)

I think Data might be my favourite.

NationMcKinley · 05/08/2019 23:01

What’s the feeling on Babylon 5? I loved that. Bit grittier I think.

My middle DS is currently obsessed with Dr Who. I think he’ll have a StarTrek phase at some point I bloody hope

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2019 23:01

I think my favourite character was Lwaxana Troi.

Oh gawd no. The Most Embarrassing Mother ever. Toss-up between her and Q for most irritating. I think there's precisely one episode in the whole canon we missed when we worked through the box sets when DD was a teen when we couldn't face yet another Q story.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 23:02

It confuses me that the captain and first officer are often together on shift. Surely it would make more sense for them to be on separate shifts?

OP posts:
NationMcKinley · 05/08/2019 23:04

Precisely, @ErrolTheDragon (great name). She was dreadful but I loved her so much. The episode she was in with Q was fab Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 23:05

Troi's mother was really annoying. Then she appears on ds9 pregnant at one point. Betazed women must be fertile for longer than human women.
