Can we have a Star Trek thread?

Been binge watching DS9 mostly. I love Star Trek, but some things make me wonder.,

Considering they must have had long shifts, I wonder what breaks they got.

And how could they actually breed with other species. Was that actually ever explained?

Anyone got a favourite/worst species?

My worst is the Skreea (sp?) from a DS9 ep. So ungrateful and wanted to claim Bajor as their own. Although there are other god awful species too.

Transporter technology will never happen.
It would 'work' by destroying the original person and making a copy at the other end.

The copy would never be exact and each go would get further away from the original and degrade.
If something got in the stream you could end up like Jeff Goldblum in the Fly!

Reg Barkley's fears had a solid foundation.

3D printing is probably the closest we have to replicator technology at the moment.

And the Holo Deck! Come on! I think we all know what that would have actually been used for!

Watch The Orville; they tackle that and it's very funny!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 18:31

I agree with the Transporter. Remember Tuvix?

Even with non-organic materials there'd be issues somewhere.

I reckon the holodecks would be self cleaning after each use. Some sort of lasers to clean/kill bacteria.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 18:38

Do you reckon they had reality TV? Did they have TV at all? They watched old films occasionally but nothing ever from the "Present"

OP posts:
Whatsnewpussyhat · 06/08/2019 18:51

Films would be pointless as there's be nothing new. Endless crappy remakes!
TV probably not conducive with the whole greater good/enlightenment thing.

I think the holodeck covers most bases. Why watch a film or read a book when you could be part of it?

Laiste · 06/08/2019 18:54

Clothes. What's the set up for washing them? Or are they one use and get recycled?

The replicator replicates, but we don't see much about rubbish and recycling.

I fully admit neither subjects would have made for a particularly riveting episode Grin Here we see Picard washing his smalls and putting the rubbish out while off shift ...

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 19:04

Imagine being stuck on laundry duty. Doing the laundry for 150 odd people. Separating the colours and all that. And the ironing. How are those uniforms so bloody immaculate, especially after a long shift?

OP posts:
Whatsnewpussyhat · 06/08/2019 19:33

Clothes must be the same as dirty plates and cups. Once finished they go back into the replicator for the materials to be re used. No tumble driers and nowhere to hang your washing out! Grin

The transporter. If such a thing existed then they would have no need for any jails, or storage facilities, or cargo ships, or even any weapons. The transporter would be the ultimate weapon. Just "beam" the enemy up! No need to fire a single phaser.

The original series made an attempt to answer this. The defensive shields couldn't be transported through. There are numerous episodes in which alien boarders manged to transport onto Enterprise.

Bowednotbroken · 06/08/2019 19:44

I'm another who was a teenager for TOS - loved Kirk then but my real crush was Chekhov! Gutted when he appeared as a baddy on Babylon 5 ( to answer a PP - yes, loved that too except for the final series). Watched all except Enterprise which I tried but couldn't get into. Am enjoying Discovery but am woefully behind. Very excited for Picard - I've seen Sir Patrick twice, once doing a one-man Christmas Carol (his film version is beaten only by The Muppets!), and another one-man show about crowned heads. Mainly about his Shakespeare experiences, but there was one reference to Picard (and he made it clear it would be the one and only!) - he did the hand thing and said 'make it so!'. Very loud cheers.

I nearly shook his hand - I did an MA at Huddersfield uni while he was chancellor and he did the graduation before mine AND after! Sad

Laiste · 06/08/2019 19:54

''tumble dryer'' GrinGrin Now i've got Picard holding up his uniform all grumpy 'cos it's shrunk. I love this thread.

cannotmakemymindup · 06/08/2019 19:56

Very happy with this thread. I have often wondered how many on Mumsnet love Star Trek to!!

I grew up with TNG which I loved, then have worked my way through them all. Discovery I didn't love the first Season but the second has gone back to Star Trek roots so was great to watch.

MissConductUS · 06/08/2019 20:06

I'm old enough so that the first series (Kirk, Spock, etc.) was the one I watched as a kid on our brand new, state of the art color TV.

I was mesmerized. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2019 20:09

Do you reckon they had reality TV?

No, I'd guess the Eugenics War eliminated both its devotees and creators.

ForalltheSaints · 06/08/2019 20:13

Saw the original series, never the new ones. The original series did a lot to promote racial harmony in a time when racism and bigotry were a lot worse than now.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 20:15

The producers totally missed a trick. I'd like to the see the crew of USS Enterprise D and E dealing with all the shitty annoying domestic annoyances us ordinary folk do.

Picard and his shrunk uniform (That has made me snigger like a child)
Sisko eating a yoghurt with a fork because Jake has misplaced them all.
Janeway losing her rag because some of the crewman are arguing about who's turn it is to sit in the Captains seat when she's not looking and then leaving grimy marks on it.

Did Nelix have to wash dishes the normal way in Vogager when the made the mess hall with a proper kitchen in for him?

Him cooking was to save energy with replicator usage being rationed. He had a stove and oven so assume there was a sink. Although i've never seen any plumbing pipes on the ships as no fresh water supply. Guess they replicate water too?

Would've been a bit pointless if he was using new dishes and cutlery every day.

I'm also guessing the loos are like airplane ones and the crap just gets sent out into space.

Laiste · 06/08/2019 20:42

I think we can be certain that Star Fleet Members have moved well above and beyond crapping !!!!! Shock

Grin
TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 20:45

Laiste, maybe Starfleet training includes training the bowels to do it once a day.

Have been inspired by this thread to introduce the DC to ST:TNG. Chose to maximise my prospects of success by blasting straight in with Best Of Both Worlds Part 1 (home of the greatest cliffhanger of all time: “I am Locutus of Borg” “Mr Worf, fire at will”). I had forgotten just how Next-Genny even the most space-battle-heavy episodes of Next Gen are. God there’s a lot of chat over cups of tea between Troi and Riker about his conflicted ambition/loyalty. DD buggered off to have a bath half way through (before the appearance of the first actual Borg). DS bounced up brightly at the end and said Episode 2 Now!?!?

DeRigueurMortis · 06/08/2019 21:35

Ahh - my tribe Grin

Loved TNG/DS9 and especially Voyager.

In terms of the latter I'm sure finally having a female Captain was a big factor but I also loved the whole premise of trying to get back home rather than exploration as with TNG.

Was a bit so/so re: Discovery if I'm honest but really excited to watch Picard.

Wiltshirelass2019 · 06/08/2019 21:36

Yay Star Trek thread. I love next generation and voyager the best but they’re all fab! (Love all the films too). Data and Tuvok are my favourite characters 😁

Wiltshirelass2019 · 06/08/2019 21:39

DeRigueurMortis Yes I can’t wait for Picard, when does it start?
