Can we have a Star Trek thread?

Been binge watching DS9 mostly. I love Star Trek, but some things make me wonder.,

Considering they must have had long shifts, I wonder what breaks they got.

And how could they actually breed with other species. Was that actually ever explained?

Anyone got a favourite/worst species?

My worst is the Skreea (sp?) from a DS9 ep. So ungrateful and wanted to claim Bajor as their own. Although there are other god awful species too.

I've enjoyed the recent films and Discovery. I've tried watching TNG but it all seems a bit comedy 80s. Should I persevere? Or is there another series that would be better to watch next - DS9, Voyager?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2019 23:22

Did you start watching TNG from the beginning? The pilot was ok but then iirc it took a while to settle down and for the characters to get established.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 05/08/2019 23:24

My people Grin

I was obsessed with the original series, then TNG then Voyager as a child/teenager. I was in raptures over the new film in 2009, hated In To Darkness and really liked Beyond.
Data or Bones are probably my favourite characters, it’s too hard to chose.
OH is adamant Kirk is better than Picard, it’s the reason we can never marry 😂 Very much hoping the new series will not disappoint

Yes, I started TNG from the beginning although I've heard people say it really picks up from s.3 so maybe I should skip ahead!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 23:32

Chief, your dp needs help. All Kirk ever wanted to do was pork as many alien women he could. Picard had too much class for that.

Janeway was an awesome captain too. She pretty much did starfleet ad hoc for 7 years. Gutted her and chakotay never got together.

Oh and it annoys me that ds9 never made mention of voyager. They did coincide at some point.

Troi's mother was in the Original Series. She was the blond nurse who was in love with Spock, she was married to Gene Roddenberry, she is Star Trek royalty!

I love Star Trek. DS9 is probably my favourite (love O'Brien) but no one can beat Picard as captain, excited for the new Picard show. Really enjoying Discovery too

Voyager started out from Ds9, so the link was that way round. And there was a mirror universe Tuvak.

The mirror universe... could have done without that, except the TOS episode and then in Discovery.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 05/08/2019 23:50

Actually the worst species are ferenghi for the horrendous they view the women.

Love it all. Love it so much. Not keen on the film reboots of Classic Trek (Vulcan - how could they?)

I've watched all of Enterprise, Discovery, TNG and Voyager.

Didn't really get into DS9 but have watched many episodes.

Have been to conventions. Was once in a lift with Uhura!

Love Q. Terrified of the Borg.

LOVE IT!

Majel Barret went further back than that - she was Number One in the pilot. And apart from Nurse Chapel in TOS (later Dr in a film?) and Mrs Troi, she was the voice of the computer in most of the series and many of the films.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 06/08/2019 00:00

The mirror universe annoys me somewhat. If it was a mirror wouldnt it be the bajorans who tried to commit genocide on the cardassians? Not them working together to enslave humans.

I've always been a massive Star Trek right from the original fan but Voyager is my absolute favourite as you might guess from the username with TNG a very close second...I used to dream about Capt Picard!
My crush is 7of9 she is so gorgeous and that figure to die for!
The Borg scare the life out of me no matter how many times I watch!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2019 00:10

The mirror wasn't an exact inverse though. E.g in the TOS, mirror Spock still had sense; and in either universe O'Brien remained basically a solid decent bloke.

ginghambox · 06/08/2019 00:10

DS9 is not Startrek

Its probably me just over thinking the mirror universe.

Great thread. I love Trek. I watched TNG with my brothers growing up in the 90's. I wanted to be Deanna Troi and I tried to grow my hair long and I wore a sparkly hairband at one point to emulate her style..badly.

I think DS9 is excellent. The writing and the story arcs in the later seasons are amazing and it's darker and more unpredictable than TNG. I share my birthday with Jadzia Dax Grin

I'm watching Discovery, though it took me a while to get into it and I'm looking forward to the new series with Picard. Hopefully it will be great!
