Favourite old tv ads

Got a new pair of shoes today for the new season and as soon as I tried them on, DH and I both said 'Ooh, new shooooes!' While the DC looked as us like we'd lost the plot as usual. They are, of course, much too young to remember the Clarks advert but it is ingrained in our memories. Which led me to think about some of the best, most memorable TV ads. Which are the ones you still remember and quote?

Many of my memorable ads have been mentioned, but not my favourite: Whitbread beer featuring the old music hall song Abdul Abulbul Amir - and a performance by Stephen Fry.

wineoclockthanks · 16/09/2018 09:41

Whenever my kids say they can't do something, I reply 'course you can Malcolm'

The series of John Smiths ads with Peter Kaye - 'it's time to go into a home Mum....
' But I'm only 55!'
And the monsters under the bed!

Brilliant

this thread is bliss. It is almost a shame that we don't watch ads any more!!

I don't think the BT Penguins have come up yet?

and here's Paula in her VW. I used to pat my VW steering wheel a lot at the time...

charliebear78 · 16/09/2018 18:52

Lots already mentioned.
"Nicole?"
"Papa?!"(don't know why that sticks)
"the kids are out, their running about-Dustbuster!"
The ad with the dog and cat and then the mouse all curling up in front of the fire!
Another Yellow Pages advert with the guy who has a house party and damages his mums coffee table.

The Judderman was terrifying.

charliebear78 · 16/09/2018 18:57

Ah just remembered
One with a Skeleton watching tv-for batteries-Something about on and on and on-Rolling stones song was used??????

charliebear78 · 16/09/2018 19:02

squirrelwatcher LOVED that radio ad and it still enters my mind randomly now

CandidCamerama · 16/09/2018 19:06

Nescafe Gold Blend Couple

First one of the first series Anthony Head and Sharon Maugham. There were 12 ads

First one of the second series with Louise Hunt, Mark Aiken and Marcus Gilbert as the boyfriend(Riders, Rupert Campbell Black) which was even better

MakeYourOwnFuckingTea · 16/09/2018 19:10

Does anyone remember a soup advert from the early 80s? I remember watching it and the jingle stuck in my head.
"Hello mother! How is father? Hes missing home but he is rather(?!) Then it gets blurry. I think it involved a mother delivering soup to her son who lived in a light house or on a rig.

charliebear78 · 16/09/2018 19:26

I can see the pub from here!

mumsastudent · 16/09/2018 19:27

that one with a baby elephant being teased than as an adult elephant walking on parade he blows water all over the person who teased him (ie long memory) cant even remember what it was for!

tillytoodles1 · 16/09/2018 20:03

I used to love "the wonder of Woolies" ads at Christmas.

CandidCamerama · 16/09/2018 20:32

@mumsastudent

Was it this one for Rollos? Although the Elephant slaps him deservedly round the chops rather than squirts him. The baby elephant bit makes me sad!

Rarfy · 16/09/2018 20:36

It was a camera / photo film one and used to say something like "konica, colours are calling me". ALWAYS made me know summer was here.

Coca Cola Christmas advert has always been a sound favourite too.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 16/09/2018 20:41

The Milky Bar Kid - back in the days of black and white TV.
Nescafe Gold Blend Couple
Finger of fudge
Shake and Vac - still sing this to myself sometimes when hoovering.
Clunk click every trip - advert in the 70s to try and get people to belt up before seat belt wearing became compulsory.
I used to love the PG tips chimp adverts "Dad, do you know the piano's on my foot? No son, you hum it and I'll play it" Classic.

MichonnesBBF · 16/09/2018 20:43

"Pappa"
"Nicole"

PigletJohn · 16/09/2018 21:22

Drummer "In the air tonight"

Are you sure it was Cadbury's?

caliroll · 16/09/2018 21:34

"I bet he drinks Carling Black Label"

  • DamBusters Ad
  • Excalibur Ad

"And all because the lady loves Milk Tray..."

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 16/09/2018 21:56

Woodpecker! What a refreshing change!

Woodpecker Cider advert

Since this was mostly before CGI, someone must have made a giant hedgehog costume for a car...

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 16/09/2018 21:56

I also like the way it sniggers at the end.

BoneyBackJefferson · 16/09/2018 22:10
