Got a new pair of shoes today for the new season and as soon as I tried them on, DH and I both said 'Ooh, new shooooes!' While the DC looked as us like we'd lost the plot as usual. They are, of course, much too young to remember the Clarks advert but it is ingrained in our memories. Which led me to think about some of the best, most memorable TV ads. Which are the ones you still remember and quote?

I’m really showing my age:

double diamond works wonders (beer)

There was also an egg advert when a man is asked ‘how do you want your eggs, fried or boiled?’

Arthur the cat eating food with his paws

Shhhhhwepps

They’re jungle fresh, they’re jungle fresh - peanuuuts! (KP?)

thecatneuterer · 15/09/2018 18:48

I can't believe this ad for real coal fires hasn't been mentioned. I once saw a documentary about the making of it and how they got the animals to kiss (all I remember was it wasn't easy!).

And more recently and still one of my faves is the Ikea cats one:

Woolworths christmas ads in the 1970’s.

Oh yeah, the ads with the dog, cat, and mouse (all kissing) was fab!

5 4 3 2 1! 54321!
Chocolate flavour coating comes first
54321!
Chew chew chew, caramel toffee and (54321)
Ooh wafer and fondant too!

Forgotten half of it! There was a bit about biscuit...

Coniferhedge · 15/09/2018 19:20

@thesockgap When I wrote the line ‘you can leave your kids behind’ I thought, you’d never do that these days!

Thought of another couple:

Unwrap a Sensation from Needlers
There’s two great sweets in one
And beneath that crispy coating
There’s a flavour full of fun!

If your hair doesn’t have it, it’s gotta get it
Get strong, get Flex-ability!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/09/2018 19:26

"Naaaaaah. Lu-on Airpor' "

Mistoffelees · 15/09/2018 19:37

My friend is convinced there was a good one where a lady cuts the chain on one of those big charity boxes (usually in the shape of a dog but this k in this case it was a sheep) and shouted "You're fweee!" Would love to know what that one was as I never saw it but it sounded really funny!

There's lots already been mentioned but other ones I remember -"In the garrrdun" (Prudential)

  • "Fat pigeon!" (Tango or Fanta)
  • "Arrrmadillo" (Dime bars)
  • "I feel like chicken tonight, like chicken tonight!"
Butteredparsn1ps · 15/09/2018 19:43

thecatneuterer was just going to say come home to a real fire!

Loved Maureen lipman as Beatie in the inner cities/Greater London advert when 01 for London changed to 071/081.

That dates me a lot doesn’t it?

woodhill · 15/09/2018 19:55

Definitely "Lu'on Airport"

Martini or Campari?

BennysBiscuits · 15/09/2018 20:09

Haven't rtwt but I liked the Imperial Leather soap that used to arrive down the slide to a person in the bath..Grin

Graphista · 15/09/2018 20:10

"That dates me a lot doesn’t it?"

Dates me more I was working for bt at this point and there were indeed people trying to get their area 'reclassified' to inner London a la Dorian in birds of a feather!

Can't find the video but there was one about bt repairing lines quickly with a scots actress in it. Shows all the work bt did to maintain lines and the woman finishes the ad by saying something like 'and it went right all by itself' - reason it stuck in my mind was Ben Elton referenced it in one of his stand up routines with a comment like 'starring the only person in the whole of Scotland who votes Tory' 😂😂

If anyone can find either clip I'd be grateful.

I feel like chicken tonight

The Hamlet advert with the guy with a comb over

Paxo stuffing I'm in the mood for Love was very funny

Can remember the jungles of so many

Birds Eye advert for mix veg where the little sad little pea wasn’t allowed to join the other vegetables as he is want good enough and they would sing We're sorry but you can’t join our club Sad

ICantBelieveIDidThis · 15/09/2018 20:25

There was a Heineken ad which showed that.

A posh woman, who's face we didn't see, pleading to the equally posh man down the phone to 'do it for her', as her finger traced round the centre of the dial clearly showing 081.

He relents and from down the phone we hear a bottle top pop and the sounds fof him drinking.

The next thing we see is the dial miraculously changing from 081 to 071 and the woman gratefully says "Thenk you".

Can't find it on YouTube, though....

MrsGrindah · 15/09/2018 20:28

What about these two from the 70s
“ Richards shops are filled with all the pretty things
Soft and love,y pretty things to wear
Hey there pretty girl make the world a prettier place...”

And ( sung by Petula Clarke I think)
“ Put a Chrysler Sunbeam in your life,
Put a little smile upon your face”

All very Mad Men

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/09/2018 20:30

I remember the Busby adverts

I’m sure I had a busby T-shirt

EyeDrops · 15/09/2018 20:43

WASSUUUUUUUUUUUP

The Toys R Us advert every Christmas 😍😍😍

Any kit kat advert. All of them. Especially the car park cctv one with the ticket machine too far away, had me weeping!

A Typhoon tea advert where a family trialled a new way to wake up in the morning - water being chucked over them. Hysterical.

EyeDrops · 15/09/2018 20:47

The Philadelphia adverts with the 'angels' on clouds!

katseyes7 · 15/09/2018 20:52

l liked the one with the 'dancing milk bottles'. We had a border collie bitch at the time it was out, and she could be flat out asleep behind the sofa, but as soon as the music started, she came bowling out, barking at the screen!

katseyes7 · 15/09/2018 21:00

l loved this one. That guy is divine!

HazelBite · 15/09/2018 21:18

I loved the one with Harvey the dog selling himself to potential adopters.
Cats with thumbs
The Xmas one for Saisburys a few years back featuring Mog
The John Lewis one with the girl dancing to Tiny Dancer

PizzaAndChips · 15/09/2018 21:28
  1. Lynx and their wonderful "Bow chicka wow wooow!"
  1. The Budweiser frogs; "Bud. Weis. ERRR."
  1. And the not-so-iconic KFC Family: "Son, what is that on your head?" "Leave him alone Barry, we can't all be into the SAME THINGS! Life's like a Variety Bucket; he likes crispy strips, you like chicken on the bo-one and stuff!!"
"It's ok, mum, must be terrible being married to a... SLAPHEAD!!!"
TheGirlOnTheLanding · 15/09/2018 21:30

Thanks, all of you, for reminding me of so many brilliant ads. I've shown some of them to Dd2 (and she's now got the KiaOra tune stuck in a loop!) I do wonder if DC will remember ads, given that most on their tv watching in on demand or YouTube rather than traditional telly.

I liked...

The yellow pages one where a teenage boy has a party while his parents are away. In the morning he discovers a scratch in the wooden coffee table so uses the Yellow Pages to find a French Polisher. The table gets fixed then the teenager looks over to a portrait on the wall and somebody has drawn a pair of glasses on it!

Toys R Us. It's a magical place we're on our way there etc.

Ariston. When my kids are moaning at me about the same thing over and over I tell them they're going 'On and on like Ariston!' 😂
