Favourite old tv ads

Got a new pair of shoes today for the new season and as soon as I tried them on, DH and I both said 'Ooh, new shooooes!' While the DC looked as us like we'd lost the plot as usual. They are, of course, much too young to remember the Clarks advert but it is ingrained in our memories. Which led me to think about some of the best, most memorable TV ads. Which are the ones you still remember and quote?

I loved the Florette advert with the warring lettuce factions!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 14/09/2018 21:12

JessieMcJessie, that's lovely but so sad. Flowers

3luckystars · 14/09/2018 21:14

This isn't an old advert but that Cadbury's one with the little girl paying for a chocolate bar with buttons and a ring and a tiny toy unicorn... and the shopkeeper gives her the unicorn saying "Your change"... makes me well up.

Some of these adverts are the best thing on TV.

3luckystars · 14/09/2018 21:18

1 minute 20 seconds in

RoseLavenderBlue · 14/09/2018 21:29

always yes, harry the spider! Loved that, and yes was Cadburys fingers. Anyone remember the one for Colmans English Mustard where there’s an upper crust family having a picnic on the beach in France when one of the ladies says ‘no mootard??’ And the Butler turns to the sea and is seen wading in and someone else says ‘dam long swim back to England, what!’ What about the Oreo advert with the little girl teaching her dad how to eat an Oreo.

CandidCamerama · 14/09/2018 21:33

Cinema not TV but possibly the greatest ad of all time - Fedora Kia Ora It's too orangey for crows.

Also Aunty Beryl etc when you are drinking bacardi.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/09/2018 21:46

3luckystars OMG Berni steaks ... now you're taking me back!! Grin

Not sure if they ever had TV adverts, but anyone remember the Golden Egg? With the egg shaped menus and the horrible, cog shaped frankfurters?

Bluetrews25 · 14/09/2018 21:56

Can never hear 'Accrington' mentioned without going 'Accrington Stanley?' in broad Scouse accent

iismum · 14/09/2018 22:07

Don't you know it's one of those ads
Lots of kids with white teeth and giant shoulder pads
It's not a drink from those crazy yanks
Because it's made right here, you know it's tougher than tanks
Made in Scotland from girders
Unpronounceable too
Made in Scotland from girders
It's called Barr's Irn Bru

Still remember that ad fondly ...

iismum · 14/09/2018 22:09

And that Dulux one that's been mentioned a couple of times went:

May the gloss in Ross be a good gloss
May the windowsills of Winchester shine
May the ceilings cover well in Motherwell
And the skirting boards of Fife have a long life
And the walls of Birmingham wipe clean do pea and ham
So brush in hand decorate this land
With Dulux paint.

Makes me really pissed off that that still lingers in my brain. What?!! I hated it even at the time.

Thereisnotheoryofeverything · 14/09/2018 22:27

Haha i didn't like the Dulux ad either but I guess it worked given that we still know the words!

Speaking of which, @willshebethelast this is what I remember

The red car and the blue car had a race
All red wants to do is stuff his face
He eats everything he sees
From trucks to prickly trees
But good old blue he took the milky way
He's looking for a treat that's fluffy and light
One that won't spoil his appetite
Oh no the bridge is gone
Poor old red can't carry on
But smart old blue he took the milky way.

Graphista · 14/09/2018 22:33

My favourites:

Smash aliens
R whites - secret lemonade drinker
Scotch video tapes - Rerecord not fade away
Shake n vac - n put the freshness back
Birds eye potato waffles - waffly versatile
Milk - Accrington Stanley? Who are they?
Hovis - note the VERY famous director

m.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mq59ykPnAE

Finger of fudge - is just enough...

Yellow pages - WONDERFUL ads from 'fly fishing by JR hartley' to 'mistletoe' to 'look at that saddle be like sitting on a razor blade'

Cinzano - fabulous comic timing!
Nescafé gold blend - a romantic drama played out in ads with the lovely Anthony head!
Country life - 'You'll never put a better bit of butter on your knife'
BT - Maureen lipman's Beattie 'you got an ology, you're a scientist!'
Cornetto - 'just one cornetto...'
Milky bar - milky bar kid 'the milky bars are on me'
Coke - 'I'd like to teach the world to sing...'
I'm a vehement anti smoking person but... Hamlet cigars - happiness is a cigar called hamlet especially combover photo booth one. A video search brings up this gem -

Nick kamen not so original after all! 😂😂 but still worth a watch 😉

m.youtube.com/watch?v=Q56M5OZS1A8

But the best ones ever? As a Scot I have to say... Irn bru 'snowman', baby fanny, and of course

Made fae girders

m.youtube.com/watch?v=H4PxuFQCDis

For the pg tips fans

m.youtube.com/watch?v=xLwTIiPdI3Y
I enjoyed them at the time but from an animal rights perspective quite dodgy!

Daddy n chips - sorry disqualified as its a "new" ad (and crap) 😂

Fair warning - tissues at the ready for this one:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=saL3fHsKCrQ

The oxo ads were lovely, heartbreaking though knowing Lynda was not enjoying a cosy family life at the time they were made, far from it. Though "watch out! Bangers!" Was an off used joke in my house.

I don't think they'd get away with the 'acting on impulse' stalker ads now either! 😂

I do remember asking dd if I could have her last rolo once - and feeling very old when she looked at me blankly!

"anyone mentioned the gorilla playing the piano, to In the Air Tonight? For Cadburys?" Think you'll find its drums, Phil Collins being a drummer like... 😂

m.youtube.com/watch?v=O_a2UVplwQU

Ahem aRiston

m.youtube.com/watch?v=YUVs7vXNZiw

Oh and most important final comments:

They're opal fruits (made to make your mouth water!), marathon bars and jif NOT sodding starburst snickers and cif (wtf!) -

maggienolia · 14/09/2018 22:42

With apologies to everyone who didn't grow up watching ATV:

"Oh I do loike to shop around the Boool Ring
There are sew many stores and shops to see
No traffic to worry me it's really noice
Everything I see cooms at a bargain proice
If oi'm ungry there's restaurants and snack bars
Or oi'll take home some market food for teee
Park the car without a fuss
Toike the train or catch a buzz
The Boool Ring centre's the ploice to bee"

Was sung by a line of West Midlands citizens dancing a conga behind a man in a bull suit.

ALongHardWinter · 14/09/2018 22:51

The 'You'd be surprised how much you'd miss Dunlop' one from the 1970s always made me laugh. I know nowadays it wouldn't be classed as PC,and probably called sexist because of the woman playing tennis losing her clothes and ending up in her underwear at the end of the ad,but apart from that,it is really funny.

TheAlchemist101 · 14/09/2018 23:10

All chocolate ones:
Fry’s Turkish Delight - full of eastern promise (cue Lawrence of Arabia/exotic lady in desert)

Cadbury’s flake- the flakiest crumbliest chocolate (cue frolicking gypsy girl)

Milk Tray - and all because the lady loves Milk Tray (the Milk Tray man -say no more)

They don’t make them like they use to!

SingaSong12 · 14/09/2018 23:13

Hovis

BT - Ology

Shave and vac

British rail with the penguin on the book yawning.

"Only the crumbliest flakiest chocolate, tastes like chocolate never tasted before." - with the woman in the bath

rainbowsandsmiles · 15/09/2018 00:34

If we have sausages you have to say it like in the Walls adverts.
"Sausages!" Grin
think the kids think I'm a bit mad

rainbowsandsmiles · 15/09/2018 00:36

Also the Sunpat one.
"Sun pat, Sunpat, our son Pat. I'll kill 'im when I get me hands on 'im!"

Sardinesandparsnips · 15/09/2018 01:08

Hamlet or Marlboro ads? I think it was an ad or maybe it was a Clint Eastwood film:) And the whites lemonade one.
There was a Nescafé one which had a couple will they/ won't they

And a bank one, about mortgages I think, and the chap says ' we want to be together' whilst the woman rolled her eyes st the camera.

GunpowderGelatine · 15/09/2018 01:09

"WAAAAAAAAAAH Bodyfooooorm! Bodyform for yooooooou"

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 15/09/2018 02:40

More recently, I liked the Smirnoff one with all the old metal being removed from the sea to make it very clear, and the car one to The Birds and the Bees.

BoudicasBoudoir · 15/09/2018 04:38

Was the pea and ham from a chicken one the same as the one where Elspeth had gone to Inverness for a hen night? That one made Inverness look unconvincingly exciting.

A friend of mine still says ooh-ah Cantona.

TSSDNCOP · 15/09/2018 06:52

There was one on during Bake Off breaks last year for Dr Oetkar with a tier of cakes singing “who doesn’t love to bake? Weirdos!” Which DS and I sing frequently substituting “bake” for whatever we are doing.

sashh · 15/09/2018 07:03

I do remember asking dd if I could have her last rolo once - and feeling very old when she looked at me blankly!

I've just remembered, during the first Gulf war a girl I was working with sent her boyfriend, who was in the army fighting, her last rolo. She made us share the packet so it was the last one.

Which come how reminds me of the Guinness, "it's not easy being a dolphin"
