I love my Kindle. It's a Paperwhite, this is the one to get as it has an adjustable backlight. I absolutely love it.

My latest version is a basic 6” backlit kindle from Amazon for £85.00 earlier this year and it is perfect for what I use it for, super light and excellent battery.

Our verdict

The simplest, most lightweight Kindle still boats an impressive 300ppi high-resolution display and adjustable front light for a comfortable read. With a battery life lasting an impressive 6 weeks (scroll down to see how the different Kindles compare with one another for specs) this is a perfectly good e-reader and, from just £69, is a great price point for a loved one at Christmas.

Amazon also have an Essentials Bundle on offer, down from £143 to £118 - this includes a fabric cover in a choice of four colours and a power adapter.

DH bought my Paperwhite for me for Christmas 2012 I think. I was inwardly furious as I thought it was such a waste of money and I'd never use it. It is honestly now the thing I'd save if the house was on fire if all humans and animals were safe! I love it.

Our verdict

The Kindle Paperwhite is the upgraded version of the conventional Kindle, featuring adjustable warm light which is easier on the eyes, as well as an extended battery life of up to 10 weeks and flush-front design. It's also waterproof (excellent news for bath readers) and when you purchase you get three months of Kindle Unlimited for free.

I've just upgraded my 2013 Paperwhite to a Signature Paperwhite because of all the Kindle threads recently and it's lovely. Bigger usable screen space for no real difference in actual size and very "clean" reading. I use it every day so on a cost-per-use basis it is worth it.

The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition offers everything that a Kindle Paperwhite does, but adds on wireless charging, an auto-adjusting front light and 32GB storage. Perfect for those who don't want to worry about storage space or faffing about trying to find a charger (not that you'll be doing it very often as the battery lasts an impressive 10 weeks!)

Amazon also has a Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition Essentials Bundle on sale too: down from £250 to £200 and including a leather cover in a choice of four colourways and a wireless charging dock.

Our verdict

The Kindle Kids 11th Generation is the kid version of the basic Kindle (listed above) which means it's the same basic model but comes with extras such as a two-year Amazon worry-free guarantee and one year's free subscription to Amazon Kids+ which gives them access to thousands of age-appropriate books and audiobooks. Not to be confused with a kids' tablet, the Kindle Kids only features books - no apps, no videos or games - so you can rest-assured that when your child is using it, they are reading.

I bought the Kindle Paperwhite Kids for my 10 year old on Prime day ... with the Prime Day discount it was cheaper than an adult one, and includes a heavy duty, fun, case. My 7 year old has now asked for one for Christmas as she likes her sister's so much, so I'll be watching out for Black Friday Amazon deals to buy her one.

Our verdict

Taking the reading experience of the Kindle Kids up a notch, the Kindle Kids Paperwhite has all the features of the Kindle Kids with a few extras: it's waterproof (which will put any parent's mind at ease), has an adjustable warm light setting and features Vocabulary Builder and Word Wise tools to help kids build their skills. It also features OpenDyslexic, a font designed especially for dyslexic readers.

The Kindle Oasis offers an impressively large 7 inch display as well as page-turn buttons, perfect for one-handed reading. There's also an adjustable warm light which you can schedule to brighten or dim or allow the automatic sensors to adjust accordingly. Our verdict

The only Kindle to enable note-taking, the Kindle Scribe doubles as a digital notebook so the use can jot down notes as well as annotate books and/or documents as they read. The screen size is a whopping 10.2 inches and comes with all the adjustable light features of the Paperwhite. There's a pen included and the user can convert their handwritten notes into neat documents and share with others.

Amazon also has the Kindle Scribe Essentials Bundle for £303 down from £403. It includes a fabric folio cover with magnetic attach and a power adapter.

When is Black Friday 2023?

Black Friday this year is on Friday, November 24 2023. That's the official date, but many retailers will hold sales and discounts throughout November, so if you're shopping for Christmas presents, you don't have to wait until the offical Black Friday day to bag a bargain. Cyber Monday 2023 is Monday, November 27.

What's the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

Traditionally, Black Friday is an in-store event where shoppers could expect big discounts on items earmarked for Christmas shopping. Cyber Monday is the same but online. However, now that more and more people do their Christmas shopping online, there is less of a distinction between the two and many retailers roll the sales period into one. Either way, you can expect some big discounts over this crucial shopping weekend, particularly on tech products such as e-readers.

What is the Amazon Prime Big Deal Day?

Much like the July Prime Day sale, Amazon Prime Big Deal day is a day of big discounts for the retail giant - and this year it falls on October 10 and 11th 2023. Be sure to check back if you're shopping for a Kindle because we expect the discounts to be significant.

What were the best Kindle deals over Black Friday 2022?

These were just some of the best discounts on Kindles last year:

Kindle Paperwhite: From £130 to £95

Kindle Paperwhite Kids: From £140 to £110

Kindle Paperwhite Signature: From £180 to £145

Kindle Oasis: From £230 to £170

What is Kindle Daily Deal?

Kindle Daily Deal is a list of books on Amazon which have been discounted (often to free or 99p) for the day and are available for download on your Kindle. Check out Amazon's Kindle Daily Deal for today.

What is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited is a subscription-based service which gives members access to millions of books as well as magazines and audiobooks via their Kindle (or any compatible device). It costs £9.49 a month and you don't need to be an Amazon Prime member.

How often do Kindles go on sale?

It depends on the retailer - but the biggest discounts on Kindles are almost always during Prime Day and/or Black Friday sales periods. Be sure to check back for the latest best deals on all the Kindles and bundles listed above over the next few weeks!
