What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving (traditionally celebrated in the US), which happens on the third Thursday of November. Shops launch big deals and generally open earlier. These stores are often 'in the black' (profitable) on that day, hence the name.
Since Black Friday became more popular this side of the Atlantic, UK shops often launch their big deals as early as the beginning of November before the official Black Friday and they often go over the weekend up until Cyber Monday.
Make sure you check back here to see the Black Friday mattress deals on offer this year, as we'll be updating this page with the top discounts as they go live in November.
What is the history of Black Friday?
Black Friday is now a huge event in the UK, but it wasn't always as popular here as it was in America, where this sales period first began. It only came across the pond in 2010 when Amazon hosted a Black Friday sale, and its enormity has since snowballed to become the huge event we know today.
It's believed that it first began in Philadelphia in 1952, when shops would become 'in the black' due to large profits, instead of in the 'red', but the term has also historically been used to describe busy traffic during the holidays in America.
When is Black Friday 2021?
This year, Black Friday is on 26 November 2021. It’s traditionally the Friday after Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US.
What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday is a one-day sale that follows Black Friday after the weekend. At first, Cyber Monday was focused on online-only sales, and Black Friday was the day to get a bargain in store, but as the popularity of the sales has grown (along with the use of online shopping), this distinction has blurred over the years.
When is Cyber Monday 2021?
This year Cyber Monday falls on Monday 29th November, but you can expect to see early Black Friday deals throughout November.
Am I protected on Black Friday?
Absolutely. Your statutory rights are exactly the same as with any other online purchase, and you’re covered by Consumer Contracts regulations. It’s worthy of note, however, that if you’re dealing with a retailer outside of Europe, it may be a little more difficult to enforce those regulations. You can also add an extra layer of protection to your online shopping by using a credit card.
How do I find the best Black Friday mattress deals?
"We have the Eve Original- got it on Amazon during the Black Friday sales and it was down to £400 odd. It’s honestly the best thing I’ve ever spent money on and we love it." - Llamasinpajamas
Those big ticket household items like mattresses are the ones to watch for the biggest Black Friday savings this year. We expect to see hundreds discounted from the most expensive mattresses. Savings like that are popular, and can often sell out quick so you need to be ready to snap up a deal, hence why it pays to be prepared.
The Mumsnet team will be working hard to bring you the best offers from different brands and retailers, right on this page. Bookmark it and don't forget to keep checking back as we'll be compiling the very best offers here. This is one sale you don't want to miss.
Tips for shopping for Black Friday mattress deals

"We have one [Eve mattress] and love it. We got it almost half price in the Amazon Black Friday sale - it would have been out of our price range otherwise!" - Kintan
The most important tip we have is to be prepared for the sales, particularly if you're paying for a pricey item like a mattress. A lot of Mumsnet users recommend compiling a list before the sales if you're doing your Christmas shopping during Black Friday, and you should do the same when making an important investment.
Write a list of your top mattress choices in order of preference so you can narrow down your search and stay focused. Some suggest signing up to brands' email newsletters or following them on social media but we would highly recommend shopping around to make sure you're getting the best offer, as retailers will offer different prices on the same product.
Alternatively, make your life even easier (and who wouldn't want that?) by checking back here for the biggest discounts. We'll be doing the shopping around for you to bring you our edit of the top choices to save you time and frustration.
