This year, Black Friday is on 25 November 2022. It’s traditionally the Friday after Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US. What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is a sales event that sees many shops, both in store and online, offer discounts to customers. Since 2010, when Amazon kicked off its first Black Friday promotion, the sale period has grown in popularity thanks to impressive offers and its proximity to Christmas, meaning many people are often searching for specific products (plus the odd impulse buy, of course).

When did Black Friday start?

Originating in America, the Black Friday sales started as a one-day only sales event following Thanksgiving. As many people had this Friday off, it was a big opportunity for shops to lure customers in with big savings and discounted stock. The term itself wasn't first used to describe this shopping day though, and it's thought that it was initially used in the 1960s to describe busy traffic during this period.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is always on the Monday following Black Friday, and as they're close together and the sales continue over the weekend, they tend to be classed as the same sales period.

Traditionally, the main difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday was that the Friday was centred around in store promotions and, as the name suggests, Cyber Monday was more about getting a great deal online. Since many of us now do a lot of shopping online anyway (especially since the coronavirus pandemic began), this distinction has faded, as many retailers now offer online discounts on Black Friday too.

When is Cyber Monday 2022?

This year Cyber Monday falls on Monday 28th November. It's another day to get some great savings, but remember the deals will be beginning much earlier so you don't have to wait until the Monday to bag a beauty bargain.
